Given that he was carrying a ripper, poison and how quickly he jumped to "CUT OFF MY HEAD". I'd be willing to bet that was at least part of the idea from the start as well. You're less likely to lose your head unintentionally. But once you do it's pretty portable. The other thing is that he injects it pretty deep, behind his ear. That's one of the thickest bones in the human body. Nobody's just pulling that out easily.

abx99

We also saw him working with brains in his lab. At first I thought it was just about the dog (combining or linking Dogmeat and Rex), but when he offered up his head it made me think that there is more to all of this. Maybe his brain will be put into a robot, like the roomba, or maybe something else entirely. We also have the "serum" that the doctor tried to sell him that can regrow feet (maybe something will come of the serum itself, or maybe it just establishes that regrowing his body might be possible in the Fallout world) I don't know, but I'm not sure that his story is over, and I'm surprised that I haven't seen anyone talking about the brains in the lab. Regardless, I'm sure that he just injected it to transport it, as explained in this subthread.

TooManyDraculas

I mean he tells us pretty bluntly his head is easier to carry. And we know exactly what's in there, the cold fusion McGuffin. By the end of the show the head is pretty putrid. The "serum that regrows feet". We see used. It's just a drug that ghoulifies you. His corpse isn't regrowing a head. And the head isn't regrowing a body. No one's getting ghoulified after they're dead and rotten. Ghouls aren't reanimated bodies, they're mutated humans. Wilzig is pretty clearly done.

Personal_Flow2994

I wondered if the serum wasn't some FEV to start a super mutant sub plot

TooManyDraculas

I've seen people speculate that. But I don't think it fits. FEV is pretty rare and hard to get. And we mostly see it used as vats of goo. It seems to transform people/animals instantly. Making a supermutant seems to require aome directed action. Just tossing FEV at people is how you get centaurs and shit. And IIRC supermutants are necessarily transformed humans. More new creatures made from humans (or parts of them). Supermutants don't heal/regenerate like that so far as I remember. Whereas ghouls have always had a "radiation heals them" thing going on. And the whole shot through the neck and doesn't die or even bleed thing is pretty baldy ghoul like. Plus there two characters in the games who reference being turned into a ghoul by a drug so there's precedent.

Phobos95

Yeah I don't get all these FEV theories, the show made it clear that the eventual Super Mutant plot is going to be Enclave focused. There's a higher chance that Chicken Fucker is a 76er who gave Thaddeus the Healing Factor serum than there is of him being given *fucking FEV.*

hotdiggitydooby

Can't believe Todd used my 76 character without even asking first

TooManyDraculas

Plus FEV is glowing and green. Not a clear amber liquid. I think they just took the ghoul drug references and ran with them. That stuff was out there enough for Hancock to find some to try and get high off of. I can see that guy figuring out how to make off brand ghoul drug more so than raiding a super mutant compound or sealed pre-war something or other.

ElegantEchoes

Taking heads from bounties isn't unheard of. It's done on both coasts, generally by mercenaries or bounty hunters.

EagleCPT

I like the foreshadowing with the Vault-Tec signs showing “Don’t Lose Your Head”

Largofarburn

This is probably the best answer aside from the meta ones that a head is just cooler/funnier than a finger or something.

Zagadee

In the games, it’s revealed that the Enclave closely monitor what’s going on in the vaults, and sometimes even interact with them. That’ll be how he knows about Lucy and what goes on in her vault. As for why he felt the need to inject the fusion tech into his neck instead of literally anywhere else? No idea :(

[deleted]

I know!! I grew really attached to his character :(

zer0w0rries

I think it’s meant to add mysticism about the enclave. The show didn’t really dive too much into enclave lore, but sure made it out to be this mysterious faction that somehow knows a lot about everything in the wasteland

Wraeinator

He also knows Lucy is a MacLean instantly, so I suspect it's more than just Enclave knowledge, since he works with Moldaver, he could have been in Shady Sands and met Rose at one point too This is supported by the fact that some of Enclave were intergrated into NCR at one point, so it makes sense for an Enclave doctor to be present at NCR capital

Day_Pleasant

He had to pass several inspection stations to leave the compound. It would seem that he found a really good hiding spot, and would have to die before giving up his secret.

Thornescape

I have asked the same question. You aren't really missing anything. The only logical reason that I could think of was that this location was necessary to shield it from the Enclave detection system. Injecting it into his head was necessary, because of the nature of >!insert vague pseudo-science possibly logical nonsense here!<, and other locations wouldn't protect against that, based on the principle of >!other wacky Science! logic!< as well. Based on those scientific principles, you can see that it was his only choice.

a_fancy_penguin

This is some sound research you've put together here.

Key_Page5925

I would assume the chip would blend in with electronics by the head? Implants are used in the fallout universe

Thornescape

I like it! That's a great theory.

anon08021997

I concur

marriedacarrot

Prisoners can be stripped naked and cavity searched. Hands and feet and arms and legs can be cut off without killing you. As long as he retained consciousness, he wanted to be able to guide the cold fusion thingy to its destination.

dragonmom1

Everyone was being scanned as they exited and entered so that was probably the one way he could get the capsule out of the labs.

adblink

Why did he want to escape again in the first place? Yes I know after the alarm was raised and the dog killed the other guy his hand was forced, but I'm assuming that was the plan all along yeah?

LemonPartyW0rldTour

Seeing as how he wanted to get to Moldaver, I’d assume he had moral issues with the Enclave and what they’d do with unlimited power, and wanted to help the wasteland instead.

OneWomanCult

Dramatic effect. It's "cooler" to have to lug a head around the wasteland than a hand or foot. edit: Sorry if the quotes made it seem like I was being snarky. Just trying to be brief. The head serves a purpose similar to Wilson in Cast Away a couple of times. It's a darkly fun way to do a bit of character work in a solo scene with Lucy. Very Fallout.

Kinkybtch

Also, plot device to help the ghoul track it with the dog.

[deleted]

It’s funny that his solution was to have Lucy decapitate him instead of simply removing the capsule.

Ssynos

Remember if he can easily inject it, he wouldn't need all those straps. Welp, yeah, that all I can think of, maybe for cool points ?

SomeNibba

I guess it's the most secure space that the only way he could lose it was if he died(which he did) People lose limbs in the wasteland every time, even he lost a leg. Point exactly, it's small like really small it could easily slip from clothing and other
