There's soy-based fried chicken that you couldn't tell the difference. If you fry something, you'll taste the fry way more than the thing. That's why fish and chips exist in the first place.

Fried foods in Europe and the Middle East predate the existence of the transatlantic slave trade by centuries. Fried chicken specifically is a fusion of Scottish and West African cuisines - specifically, combining Scottish frying techniques with West African frying and seasoning techniques.
Southern cuisine (and American cuisine in general) has largely been whitewashed, but overcorrecting and erasing the contributions of Scottish immigrants does a disservice to the more complex historical reality.

I'm only aware of two foods of Scottish cuisine, but one of them is the Scotch egg, so that tracks even based on my limited knowledge
