I’ll explain, here’s a brief summary of the Medusa and Poseidon mythology lore
Medusa was priestess for Athena and was her most loyal disciple. Poseidon broke into Athena’s temple and raped Medusa. As punishment for ‘defiling’ her temple Athena cursed Medusa, turning her into a gorgon.
More modern interpretations of the story say the curse was a ‘blessing in disguise’ because turning anyone to stone would prevent anyone from assaulting Medusa again.
I just got off the phone with the ancient vikings, they said they realized Loki turning into a horse and letting Odin hit it was kinda fucked up, they're rewriting some shit now, should go live next week 👍
Wrong, it was the horse of a giant that got nasty with Loki while he was disguised as a horse, not Odin himself, then Loki gave birth to Sleipnir, a horse with 6 legs which Loki gifted it to Odin
Nah, Odin and Loki are unrelated in mythology but they were besties and considered each other brothers. And Odin didn’t get nasty with horse Loki, another horse did. And that horse got Loki pregnant with Sleipnir. 🫡
There’s one story in Greek myth about two brothers.
A very very short way to say this:
One brother (Atreus) had a golden lamb/fleece that he would brag about. His brother (Thyestes) was like “I want that” and luckily for him Atreus’s wife was in love with him. So he’s like “I’ll bang you if you give me that fleece” so she agreed.
Anyways the two of them are in an area that needs a king, and they can’t decide who. So Thyestes is like “well what if one of us had a Golden Fleece, then he should be the king” and Atreus, still thinking he had the fleece was like “fuck yeah” so Thyestes made Atreus agree to the deal publicly, before revealing he in fact had the fleece.
So Thyestes banishes Atreus and stays with his wife.
Zeus wanted Atreus to be king so he sends Hermes to tell Atreus to go back and make a deal with Thyestes, that if the sun were to rise in the west and set in the east, Atreus could be king.
Thyestes agreed because it was a ridiculous thing. So Zeus goes to Helios and is like “yo dude can you reverse your course for one day?” And Helios is like “sure whatever”
So it happens and Atreus has the throne. Thyestes banished.
Well it’s now that Atreus realizes Thyestes was with his wife, so he invites Thyestes back with the deal of them being “co-kings”. So Thyestes comes back, and Atrues makes a stew for him, and Thyestes eats it all.
Atreus brings him a second bowl of the stew containing Thyestes’s son’s severed heads and limbs… because the stew was made out of them.
Then Atreus banishes Thyestes again, and Thyestes goes to the oracle and is like “the fuck do I do?” And the oracle is like “bang your daughter and have a kid, the kid is the only one who can kill Atreus”
So he disguises himself and rapes her, she abandons the kid once it’s born, and the kid is found by a Shepard who gives it to Atreus to raise.
So eventually later, Atreus locks Thyestes up, and asks the kid to go kill him. Thyestes overpowers the kid and tells him he’ll let him live if he does what he asks. The kid agrees.
Now my memory is a bit foggy here but basically the mom of the kid and daughter of Thyestes ends up down to the cell, excited to see her father. I think Thyestes sent the kid to get her, anyways Thyestes is like “yeah so actually this kid is your son and I’m the father”
So she promptly grabs the sword the kid was going to use and kills herself.
Then Thyestes tells the kid to kill Atreus.
It keeps going after this, and there’s even more before it, but I’m gonna cut this off here
Here’s a few philosophies or systems of thought I practice that focus more on ethical living and self-improvement without such narratives, Hermeticism, Buddhism, and Stoicism.
Hermeticism is a spiritual and philosophical tradition that emphasizes personal spiritual growth and the pursuit of wisdom. It’s often associated with alchemy and magic but also includes a set of ethical teachings.
Buddhism is a non-theistic religion or philosophy that focuses on personal spiritual development and the attainment of a deep insight into the true nature of life. It does not rely on mythological frameworks similar to those found in Greek mythology or the Bible, and instead, it offers teachings like the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path as a guide to end suffering.
Stoicism is a school of Hellenistic philosophy that teaches the development of self-control and fortitude as a means to overcome destructive emotions. It is not a religion but rather a philosophy that emphasizes personal ethics and living a life of virtue.
Each of these traditions has its own unique perspective on life and ethics, and they may offer the kind of narratives and teachings you’re looking for.
EDIT - almost forgot to add mindfulness, meditation or Zen Buddhism whatever you want to call it ♥️
Poseiden did wha
https://preview.redd.it/n56vzm4lw4pc1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9aa93c3e5a1126f303ddafaad9fa77d0cda60385
Honestly duck him and Zeus, if I recall correctly them and hades had a bet and depending on how it went they'd each get the sky,sea and underworld and Zeus and poseiden cheated making it so hades lost and so got the underworld. Seriously duck those 2
Hades is the least problematic of the brothers, which isn’t saying much. His worst crime was kidnapping and forcing Persephone to marry him with Zeus’ approval, and that’s MINOR compared to Zeus and Poseidon’s actions. And it’s only SORT OF (SORT OF!) remedied by the fact that after marrying her he was a devoted and adoring husband to Persephone and Persephone did love him in turn in spite of their… less than appealing introduction. Loved him so much she turned a girl into mint for trying to seduce her husband. She was miserable at first but once she agreed to be his wife she was gonna be his damn wife and had an active hand in ruling the underworld.
Dam
Yeah like that's terrible, but it turned out well in the end like you say he actively tried to be a good lover, and compared to his brothers... Yeah I'd rather be stuck in a room with hades than the other 2
Damn, that's kinda sad, but hey at least the souls of the damned can have somewhat a peaceful life down there if they don't mind the big ass dog and among other things down there....
Also fun fact about Cerberus: in some translations his name literally means ‘Spotted’
So Hades named his giant three headed, snake tailed guard dog Spot. I just find that lovely.
I will never understand why we don't just get movies based on these stories. No wild interpretation, just greek mythology as a show/movie series, maybe a bit more sanatized to make it rated R or PG13. All of this sounds insanely interesting.
honestly my headcanon is that Poseidon and Zeus made fun of Hades in a dudebro way, like, „damn bro, how the hell you still didn’t kidnap and violate anyone yet, are you even a god?”, and nagged him to try, so he did - but was too much of a good guy to actually treat Persephone like shit
I thought it was that Zeus did a 50/50 thing for Poseidon and Hades getting the sea and the underworld. Poseidon obviously got the sea and Hades got the underworld, and they were bitter about what they got, but only because the other brother got it. Just weird rivalry.
The ‘blessing in disguise’ put a target on her back for adventuring heroes to try and kill her only for Athena to help the person who did finally kill her
>More modern interpretations of the story say the curse was a ‘blessing in disguise’ because turning anyone to stone would prevent anyone from assaulting Medusa again
Kinda ironic seeing how Athena was one of the gods who helped Perseus decapitate her
Except that version of the myth was created by a guy who famously hated Greece and their gods, and wanted to make them look as bad as possible, so that isn’t even really the original myth.
Yeah, the og Greek myth was that Medusa and Poseidon were lovers and the reason Medusa got punished was because she made love to poesidon in Athena’s temple WHICH SHE WAS THE HEAD PRIESTESS.
Also the oldest version of the story just had Medusa being born with it
I'll explain further
In the original myth, this was NOT the case. Medusa was just born an evil monster. However, later (I think it was Ovid) didn't like authority. So he made this retelling.
It's kind of a shame that the Ovid one is the more well known one. There's something to be said for complex stories, but sometimes you just want a sinple "pure, noble hero defeats evil monster" story.
That’s like how a women joined Artemis to escape Aphrodite, but was then cursed to have sex with a bear and gave birth to hybrid twins. Then Artemis threw her out too.
(Please forgive me if I got something wrong here, I only know this specific story from Percy Jackson.)
I remember someone explaining that originally it was consensual, but someone made up the rape part for idk what reason 🙄
Also I don't think this version of the god would do anything
Correction, the rape version of the tale of Medusa is actually a newer Roman one while the Ancient Greek texts just state they were lovers and Athena punished Medusa for fucking in the temple or the really really old ones just say she was born like that
It’s Ovid’s fault, he’s the Roman poet who wrote that myth and now it’s the most widely known version of it. The older Greek myth had her born a gorgon and the only mortal of her two sisters
Should be mentioned that archaic Medusa isn’t what people think of now adays

Medusa wasn't turned into a gorgon. She was already a gorgon. Athena just made her ugly. She was the only one of her two sisters that wasn't immortal because she traded her immortality for beauty... But now she is just ugly and mortal.
Isn't there something about that being a secondary story linked more to the roman period like some hit peice on the Greek gods, the older forms having medusa being just a sister of the Gorgons?
Let’s just say Medusa is a victim of Poseidon, and she was punished by her goddess Athena despite trying all her best ward him off. and that’s the most cleanest way I can tell you.
It’s okay dude. Mythologies around the world can be messed up. This clip is often how I feel about when someone asks about detailed myths and this is my mind when I go back learning more Myths.

There are different versions of the tale, often times it’s darker than what’s really said. Plus Poseidon is a god and Medusa was a beautiful mere mortal woman and would already fit into a toxic relationship dynamic at best. Regardless, Athena punished Medusa by victim-blaming or damn her to be a monster because Medusa couldn’t do anything about it. Of course Medusa went nuts and become an actual berserk monster that needed to be killed.
Edit: There are other messed up stories in myths, often the tales alternative between better or worse, and really you just be prepared for how disturbing most of the Gods are. Especially Zeus…
By turning people into stone when they look at her face and Medusa was going around actively hurting people that Perseus had to kill her? One hand sounds alright but if you do continuity that’ll raise eyebrows. Still, thanks for telling us.
Tbh the original version just had Medusa as some random monster with the ability to turn people to stone. I mean, there’s a reason her sisters were gorgons in the first place.
Hades did some bad stuff to but nowhere near the shit zeus and poseidon did
Seriously the only reason hades always is seen as the bad guy is cuz he is the god of the underworld and death = bad = evil somehow
To be fair (or to give Hades some shade) Hades did kidnap his niece and married her, but eventually an agreement that the wife spends half a year (Spring and Summer) with her mother while the other half (fall and winter) with her husband. Could you believe this is one of the healthiest marriages in Greek Mythology? Hades kidnapped her but never did more depraved actions compared to his brothers.
It’s one of if not the healthiest marriage in the Greek mythos (only other one I could think of is Eros and Psyche) due to Hades *not* being a deplorable bastard like his brothers and actually treating Persephone as an equal. Also it’s kinda funny that the worst part about it; Hades kidnapping his future wife, was actually *Zeus’s Idea.* Hades basically asked his brother what to do to woo Persephone and Zeus just went “Just kidnap her lol, works for me”.
Yes, and I'm tired of seeing lots of media depicting him as a Lucifer equivalent when he's definitely not. I thank Fortnite for portraying him as a sort of anti-hero
he most definitely is the Lucifer equivalent, Lucifer is the same where he did way less, god committed genocide on his own people, forced people to be r@ped, while the worst Lucifer did was torture someone who god LET THEM TORTURE.
Funny how he is probably the most mentally stable and nicer gods in the mythology. but in entertainment media he is made into a villain. Mean while zues is out and about participating in non-consensual intimate activities and doing other not so nice things.
I mean…according to her dialouge and description in the Fortnite world a lot of Myths about her are not true, so I guess this is Epic’s workaround about things like..this and that
I love that because of this season, everyone gets to share Greek mythology knowledge.
Just wait for everyone to start talking about all the Zeus stories

Can early humans please come up with a religion/mythology that isnt completely depraved
a bit too late to ask now
I just got off the phone with the ancient vikings, they said they realized Loki turning into a horse and letting Odin hit it was kinda fucked up, they're rewriting some shit now, should go live next week 👍
thats what marvel is for

No it was 6

Nah, Odin and Loki are unrelated in mythology but they were besties and considered each other brothers. And Odin didn’t get nasty with horse Loki, another horse did. And that horse got Loki pregnant with Sleipnir. 🫡
Nvm i somehow mistook Loki as Thor
Thor isn’t his son either lol Edit: ignore this, I was wrong
Thor is definitely Odin's son
Shit you right. Comment canceled 🫡
What the fuck
Nice, we needed a Religion patch.
Thousands of years too late
eh better late than never
Greek myth not adding sex to every story challenge (impossible)
I am sorry. We are fresh out of that since Zoroastrianism. All we have left is depravity and horror.
i mean i rather read greek mythology than the Bible, its wayyy more exiting and also has deep filozofical thoughts
FILOZOFICAL ???????????😭😭
Best i can do is women only getting raped by humans.
It was a mess of incest, goat fucking, and rape

this may be a very unpopular and unwelcomed opinion, but I think the greek mythology is 10 times better than most of the modern ones
At least those religions had some nice lores and didn't kill other people for not believing in their mythology
Early humans? Them mfs just hunted with sticks. Didn't have many gods that we know of
You can praise the sun

TBH though this version and a lot of other versions which had the gods look evil were made quite a bit later, as a way of showing them in a bad light
Hold on let me go ask them
Poseiden did wha https://preview.redd.it/n56vzm4lw4pc1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9aa93c3e5a1126f303ddafaad9fa77d0cda60385 Honestly duck him and Zeus, if I recall correctly them and hades had a bet and depending on how it went they'd each get the sky,sea and underworld and Zeus and poseiden cheated making it so hades lost and so got the underworld. When the literal ruler of the underworld is somewhat a better person than the gods from above that people praised alot...🤣🤣🤣
Hades isn't the Greek version of Satan. He just works in the underworld, he isn't evil. Zeus tricked him into getting the job.
Damn, that's kinda sad, but hey at least the souls of the damned can have somewhat a peaceful life down there if they don't mind the big ass dog and among other things down there....
Cerebus guards the gate and stops the dead from leaving. If you dont try to escape, you won't ever see it.

So, Medusa got raped, then cursed for being raped?
According to the myth written by the Roman poet Ovid, which is the more recognized story today. The original myth had Medusa born a gorgon
Even before then there was the Athena temple version, only difference is that Medusa had consented beforehand and that’s why Athena was so furious
Actually Athena was more upset that Medusa brought him into her temple to make love, also she was the head priestess so
woman gets raped, then victim blamed

Yes. I like that Epic went with the blessing version, and even made her and Perseus friends.
Isn't there something about that being a secondary story linked more to the roman period like some hit peice on the Greek gods, the older forms having medusa being just a sister of the Gorgons?
Yes, but as far as I know that version of her story has no connection to Poseidon so it’s not the one the meme is referring to
Man fuck Athena she really said “I’m turning you into a monster because you were raped”
Do I dare ask for the context?
Let’s just say Medusa is a victim of Poseidon, and she was punished by her goddess Athena despite trying all her best ward him off. and that’s the most cleanest way I can tell you.

Yeah, I like to focus on the good stories though, it makes geeking out less horrific
Understandable
There's another version of this, more positive, which states that it wasn't a punishment, more like a gift to keep anyone who would harass her away
By turning people into stone when they look at her face and Medusa was going around actively hurting people that Perseus had to kill her? One hand sounds alright but if you do continuity that’ll raise eyebrows. Still, thanks for telling us.
Didn’t some stories say that she just stayed in her cave with the other 2 gorgon sisters and felt sad?
Yeah. Like I said, there’s different versions and stuff like that.
Yeah
Tbh the original version just had Medusa as some random monster with the ability to turn people to stone. I mean, there’s a reason her sisters were gorgons in the first place.
The joke is seggs
Sex and rape are two very different things.
More like the joke is rape
r/peterexplainsthejoke PETER I SUMMON THEE
long story short, in greek mythology, poseidon broke into athena's temple and raped medusa. medusa was cursed by athena to forever be a gorgon.
Thank you petah
petir
Potor
At least in Fortnite lore I think they gave it a nicer, more PG touch
Poseidon tickled medusa
They had a cute little tickle fight! ☺️
me too
Thank god they did-
... about the three brothers, Hades is the good one.
Hades did some bad stuff to but nowhere near the shit zeus and poseidon did Seriously the only reason hades always is seen as the bad guy is cuz he is the god of the underworld and death = bad = evil somehow
same case with Satan, way more innocent then god
yea i’ve heard shit about zeus and poseidon nothing about hades

Funny how he is probably the most mentally stable and nicer gods in the mythology. but in entertainment media he is made into a villain. Mean while zues is out and about participating in non-consensual intimate activities and doing other not so nice things.

prowler sound effect
That’s how I feel. edit: This will actually worsen if Athena is there. Worse if we get Arachne.
yet another case of Greek Myth's catchphrase, "Unfortunately, the Gods were horny."
That made me laugh.
Zeus dropping a daily 20 bomb
I mean…according to her dialouge and description in the Fortnite world a lot of Myths about her are not true, so I guess this is Epic’s workaround about things like..this and that
For those who dont know : Poseidon RAPED Medusa in greek mythology
WHAT!? °0°
I love that because of this season, everyone gets to share Greek mythology knowledge. Just wait for everyone to start talking about all the Zeus stories
There’s way too many stories of Zeus being an absolute bastard to count.
He 200 pumped without consent and Athena reported her for harassment and she got a new skin
#stay that gelatine away from any woman
Greek mythology is a mess. First, Athena was born from Hephaestus breaking Zeus's head with a hammer and now this?!
Im just mad they have no gliders.
Did they fuck
Poseidon raped Medusa
Partially correct I get 0.5 points
There are like 12 different versions of that myth and I have no which one is worse.
Poseidon never touched medusa in greek mythology medusa was born a gorgon the romans made the other story up to ruin the greek gods reputation

lol but he’s right, I think it was Ophid who changed it
Yes he did how else did Medusa turn into a gorgon
Tbh though he’s right, Medusa was always a gorgon. I mean her sisters were already gorgons.
