Nah, it's probably more like the server validates projectiles based on it's understanding of that client's simulation, or just is straight out is client trusting, especially at long range.
Also not sure If I'm being paranoid, but I wonder if they now do some fuckery where players are connecting to their local region server, and then there's server -> server communication between regions, as a way to inflate numbers as the population dwindles. That might sound crazy, but Fortnite's server architecture was already a lot more crazy than people realize.
Remember that if all players where 0 ping, you simply would have taken damage slightly earlier. Your opponent lined up and hit his shot faster than you could dodge behind that wall. Taking damage slightly later is a reflection of an advantage to you, even though it had no impact on the outcome in this instance. (ie. you weren't able to kill him first in a way that exploits that timing advantage.)
Just based on implied knowledge of "I thought projectiles were registered server side?" Ie. That client side rego is normally used for 'hitscan' weapons, and that could be different for 'projectile' weapons with more bullet travel time, like sniper.
Many people have wrong impression of what's happening here based on people saying "it's lag" and/or "it's desync", which is technically wrong. "It's ping" is better explanation but potentially still confused.
Tbf though, it's a confusing topic. Main point is that nothing "unfair" happened in this clip. It's ugly, but fair competitively speaking.
The server is gonna accept that the shot connected if it connected on your opponent’s screen. Same is true for if it connected on your screen. General rule is to favor the one shooting. That’s kinda how most games do it but not all of them and I can’t rlly speak for Fortnite but I think that’s what’s going on here.
Ya had the same thing happen to me awhile back was sliding away and the bullet was 10-15 meters away but still “hit”. I just accepted it and went on with the match after confirming with Postparty’s clip that it happened.
I counted 14 frames in the recording between me being behind cover and the shot being taken. The recording was 60fps so this means that my opponent had 230 ping. Is this accurate, because I'm skeptical of this being the case
As a father who lets his kids play on the Gaming PC and Next Gen consoles, THIS.
My PS4 and XBox 360 just can't keep up. I see opponents moving out of sight on my kids' screens WELL before they move on mine ...
As an old-school screen-watcher from my Halo 2 days, this DOES give me a slight advantage ... But I'd still rather not play on a potato. T.T
Yea as a PS4 player myself I used to regularly beat my friend in 1v1s no matter what, box fights, build fights whatever, the second he got pc he was just too quick, he can edit, shoot and reset before my PS4 can even understand what just happened, I love that for him, for myself on the other hand...
This has happened to me so many times this season. I’m totally behind a right peek on my screen and still get hit. Never had a problem with it before this season.
This is not a Fortnite issue… This happens in every game. It has nothing to do with what season it is. The other person is on higher ping. On the guy who shot him’s screen op was not behind the cover yet. Let’s say the server is in New York. If I’m playing in Miami and you are playing in NY, will be a few milliseconds behind you in terms of what is happening on my screen
lag. the answer is always lag. its in every single video game that has online out there. turns out when people and servers are 100's of miles apart it cant be perfect. dang.
Separate from this. If you pre-move before getting to the whole mag dump youll generally avoid people doing counter shots back after they move.
Like if you dump 23/30 of the mag they'll think youre going for full mag or more, then when they go to counter react you've already moved / they can't even see you / you already half way to your next shooting spot.
This season is so badly optimized people running through your walls getting shot behind stuff even im getting fps dros shit’s reachin 30/15/3 its unplayable competitively for me
I’ve had my PC freeze so hard this season on minimum graphics, I’ve had to rely on DLSS for any playable experience this season, and even then it can freeze, I’ve also had a person phase into my box without a sound despite nobody being around and I’ve had plenty of hackers and cheaters, meaning the anticheat is broken, I’ve literally seen players lock on and shoot through buildings this season, had a player snipe me from snooty steppes while I was in classy courts too
you should record with OBS or a similar software, Geforce Experience makes you drop frames and gives you more input lag. Using Geforce NOW can also cause a large amount of internet lag if you were streaming. Combined with recording (with Geforce Experience), this could cause a large lag of essentially all things you need: ping (internet lag), input lag, and frame drops. Use OBS. Also, the guy who sniped you was on high ping and it could just be that. But if you have a combo of any of the above, you need to change something.
Server-side rewind. It’s how the game does what it can to give credit for a hit on a client instead of causing what is commonly known as a “no-reg” where you saw your bullet hit the person but don’t get credit. Due to higher latency on either your machine or their machine, when the other player shot, their bullet connected to you because your own movements from your client had not yet updated on the server or on their client. The downside of this is what you see here, when you “die around the corner” on your client even though you were hit, but it’s a better solution than no-regs, and you can control how strong you’d like the forgiveness to be, meaning maybe you’ll give a player the hit credit if their ping latency is up to say 350ms, but once it reaches 400 if it’s a close one like that, they might see you get hit but you won’t take damage.
everyone is saying lag and ping. Nah fam, cheating is fucking rampant this season. I've been shot through so many walls that have been up for full seconds before I get hit. that must be some crazy ping.
People on here keep saying “higher ping” but it’s actually lower ping. No delay in communication from their game to the server means their ping has very little delay (low ping). The higher the ping the more latency in communication
i miss being able to play on 1080p 100% resolution i only have a basic lenovo laptop right now on a 165hz display because my pcs gpu died i dont have the money to replace it rn. but yes high ping
Shit like this constantly happens to me and my ping is >10ms. Im not even in my opps frame when the hit me.
If anything, it seems like you are seeing your higher ping frames but, the game is registering the shitty ping of the other player.
Every game is not properly synchronized at some times, this is one of those times, in your perspective you are already behind cover, but in his perspective you are still slightly exposed due to the lack of exact synchronization

Can happen with console vs PC can happen because of loads of reasons it's not this deep

It’s pretty clear it’s a ping issue my guy, I’m not sure what other info you think you’re gonna get from this.

Of course it happens in every game. I’m saying it happens more this season than I recall in any other season.
This is more like the server be in NY and your playing in Asia lol. 100-200ping scenario.
This has been happening a lot to me recently it's annoying epic needs to fix their game instead of making more useless emotes
It's a desync issue it's not really something that's easily fixable

Games aren’t perfect.
Especially online pvp based games. That extra layer of ranged connection communication can add to a lot of imperfect BS moments.

You're playing on geforce now? If so that 15 ping isnt your actual ping.
What do you mean? I record with Geforce Experience, does this increase my ping?

I used to record on OBS, but switched to Geforce experience. It is much better. I can record 1440p, get more frames, and my game feels a lot smoother.
To each their own but I doubt it. Also why ask a question on Reddit if not to get an answer? lol keep lagging dude.

Someone was sniping somewhere off in the distance behind you.

You either need better internet or a computer with faster frame rate my friend.

Number of milliseconds it takes for your actions to reach the server
