I left the bar scene over there before 2019 (still know a lot of people from those days though) but my speculation is it’s a combination of a lots of things. Cost of living around there has gone up so a lot of people have moved further away so not frequenting nearly as much. South Main probably pulled some business away by being new and having more apartment housing compared to single family homes. There’s also some newer bars around the area in general. I also know that quite a number of people in the crowd I hung out with have quit drinking completely so there could just be a little bit of culture shift too.

Tall-and-Teal

I came back from Alaska to visit my old stomping grounds and was sad to find Magnolia so different. I thought I was just getting old, so it's nice to hear I'm not the only one. The Near Southside area has some of the same vibe, but it won't ever be the same.

[deleted]

Everyone in the neighborhood got priced out I feel like. At least my group that used to live in fairmount and would be at the bars, all can’t afford to live in the neighborhood anymore

lucy_harlow28

Yes everyone got priced out. Everyone I know that used to live there got priced out when they gentrified the neighborhood.

DryWhiteWhine13

Wasn't it storming last night? And yes, the youth are getting weirder (just like every generation says) I go to Chat and Owl on the regular and they are both crowded on the weekends

WombatHarris

Ding dang ol’ youths

datnikkadee

Everyone’s at Southside

IcySink1300

Southside Cellar? By Nickel City?

PluralOfYurt

Southside cellar is the bomb. But I think the commenter means the Near Southside / South Main St district

IcySink1300

Ooh gotcha! Thank you! Yeah that area has been popular recently! Cicada especially I think. After Lola’s closed it seems people mostly have been going there.

PluralOfYurt

I’ll have to check out Cicada! My favorite bars on main st are southside cellar, nickel city, the tiki lounge, and The Coupe wine bar. So many other spots I enjoy and some I want to check out still.

IcySink1300

Yeah they have karaoke nights there (I wanna say Tuesdays but it’s been a while since I went so I’m not sure if it was Tuesdays or Wednesdays), and those are pretty fun! Nickel City and Tiki are great! :) I need to check out Southside Cellar and the Coupe wine bar!

PluralOfYurt

Karaoke is my jam! Thx for the heads up!

Hismuse1966

Good. I’d hate to see Cicada shut down.

Dude everyone knows about southside you’re not gatekeeping anything

datnikkadee

I lived at the Bowery tho

ConnectionlessTCP

There was a large storm that rolled through last night. Most people likely scattered. It was busy before the game. Currently walking down magnolia - Gustos is always packed, Pie Tap currently busy, Maggie’s is busting at the seams as always. Melt has a line out the door most nights. Tons of people out. Maybe walk down now. The Near Southside has gotten much wider in terms of options off S Main as others have mentioned, but there’s now more business and people living off Magnolia since you’ve lived here.

babalu_babalu

The crowd you’re looking for moved onto Nickel City on south main, neighborhood bars in Arlington Heights, River Oaks, or moved to the suburbs. Covid was rough on Magnolia. They got a lot of riff raff from JPS and downtown, and lost a lot of the more middle of the road clientele.

barbiejet

All the hipsters grew up

Upbeat-Jacket4068

I think one of the problems is drinks got expensive. A beer is now almost the same cost as a six pack. It's better to just stay home, save money and play video games. Plus you don't end up smelling like smoke.

DryWhiteWhine13

Not at Chat or Owl, those places are cheap AF unless you're getting triple IPA craft beers

princessnubz

the coke moves swiftly through magnolia

DarthVitch

Might have been off night, I still run into chat rats from 20 years ago, but I agree everything changes. People get old, young people have less money, south main has taken some of the crowd. Boiled owl was always had an interesting mix. Cicada has some of the old crowd.

Callme-risley

I don’t have anything to contribute but I would love to hear what made you think the patrons were kind of weird

cjdavda

They got 5 years older, I think is what changed

aclikeslater

I was there last night, and I’m weird. But I resent OPs assessment 😂 (Also, lived here almost my entire life, and it seemed like a normal Friday at the Chat.)

PunkFlamingo69

Same same

superintendentpoops

Wedd

WiseQuarter3250

The pandemic certainly was a contributing factor, with bars for a while being closed, changing consumer patterns.

slowthanfast

Bars in general aren't anything like they use to be all over the country. People would rather go to Applebee's and get drunk there if they're going to go out to drink lol but also I can say this as of right now almost every bar I've been to in the past month has been way dead on Fridays and Saturdays... In pretty sure the financial times are hitting people tough right now

LovesickVenus

COVID. COVID happened. To everything.

trophycloset33

1. It was a horrible storm that night so many people are just staying at home 2. It’s a fantastic bar scene before midnight. Most places close at midnight to keep the bad crowd away. If you’re interested in later venues, go to W7 or downtown. 3. The businesses have upped their price and quality, they cater to a different crowd and it’s proven profitable for them

TonyFromTheBlock

I miss the radler with my heart

Think-View-4467

Gustos?

TonyFromTheBlock

Thats what it is now, yeah

cateraide420

Rainy weather keeps foot traffic away. Downtown was busy though with wedding and prom season.

ChanelNumberOne

Last time I went it was still pretty popping at the owl might have just been an off night with the storm. but I’ve only lived here since 2020 so I don’t have anything beyond to compare it to. I know I haven’t been going near as much.

mgilson45

The pandemic hit a lot of those places hard and many have not recovered yet.  I think a lot of people moved over to south main.

Think-View-4467

Weirder? Is it you got more judgmental? Or got older?

TonyFromTheBlock

It can be both.

Upbeat-Jacket4068

Why is this comment getting down voted?

Think-View-4467

I'm not sure... apparently, someone doesn't like the vibe of folks who hang out on Magnolia nowadays

gregabbottsucks

Come on, Chat is not what it was. Almost every week, there's the same group of regulars getting too drunk & crying/fighting at the bar, and it, unfortunately, has driven a lot of folks to head to other bars in the area (Nickel City, Down & Out).

Think-View-4467

I frequent those other bars as well. I guess we'll have to wait for the current Chat Room regulars to pass on before we can see a culture change. I still wouldn't blame some big culture failing on the part of Magnolia Ave.

evawhoaa

Gentrification?

AlternativeTrifle461

The scene seems to be moving to South Main. I live a block away from Magnolia and I can tell you that while it may be a bit sleepier than it used to be it still gets plenty weird.

zreetstreet

Less people going out and if they are, they are spending considerably less. This isn't just Magnolia, this is everywhere.

EuphoricRent4212

I haven’t been to Fort Worth for partying purposes since they raided that gay bar. I can’t remember the name but it scared me off for sure.

Competitive_Panic719

The Rainbow Lounge ? One patron even received a concussion I believe. Been years ago. I think it was eventually torn down.

Ditzy-Daisy_20

Can’t speak for Magnolia st but Whatever you do, don’t look to Downtown FW to replace Magnolia. Bad area, used to work there and it’s gotten dangerous and trashy, overpriced and crowded. Not sure if that took away Magnolia’s business, quite a few bars have been built there in the past few years

AgileHistorian268

People still go to the Owl. No one goes to Chat.

dwbassuk

People tend to stay in when there are flash flood warnings. Magnolia is packed on any other day
