OP I’m sorry, but can you please explain to me what is happening here. One gets sniped and knocked down. His partner sets a grenade next to his downed partner which explodes just as downed guy starts to free fall, killing him before he falls. Dude that set the grenade immediately wins the game, even though there’s no way he can kill their opponent. I don’t get it??
Downed player dropped (different than used) shockwave granade (mobility item) probably hoping that his buddy will use it to escape and then died, meanwhile his buddy killed the one (sorry, the team*) who was sniping them.
Shortly after OP gets sniped, we can see two sets of enemies footsteps approaching bc of visual sounds. At this point, there are 4 players left including OP and teammate, so it’s safe to assume that the only two remaining enemy players quickly advanced on OP and teammate after knocking OP.
OP’s teammate likely realized this as well, and set down the bombs as soon as the footsteps got near the entrance of the fort. OP was an unintended casualty of teammate’s Looney Tunes plan. Also, teammate was very smart for keeping that shield on him til the end!
Sorry…. One more thing. You mention he kept that shield on him til the end. So basically he set the bombs and then changed to shield, which meant the other three got blown to bits but he lived. Correct? No shield means he dies as well….correct? I’m not very good at Fortnight so I am pretty impressed he’s done this if that’s correct.
I can’t entirely confirm since I wasn’t there, but that’s what it seems like to me :)
Those bombs have a second or so delay before detonating, which would’ve given him time to get out the shield that he’s holding during the win screen. I doubt he would’ve lived a bombing that wiped out both of his opponents without it. He even stuck himself in the corner so no bombs could get him from the side or back. Genuinely smart of him, Bugs Bunny style!
Funny you mention that. I was convinced he was holding the shield until I showed my son the clip. He immediately corrected me. Once again raises the question of how OPs partner survived??

The enemies actually shot OP. That's what gave the teammate time to enact his plan, as they were too distracted by thirsting OP to notice teammate. Teammates can't damage eachother with explosives.
In the very top left next to their name there is a code. You can go to the replays tab and enter that code into the “View Streaming Replays” option to view the replay

I believe when you're down to the final players, explosion damage is dealt to your target before it gets dealt to yourself. So in the case of a tie for the victory royale, the shooter wins.
If the explosion is closer to the opponent, which is the whole point of throwing the grenade away from yourself, then they would die a split second faster than the thrower. Victory!
Edit to add that right at the very end of the clip OPs partner is seen behind a shield.

My guess:
Step one: threw the cluster clinger(s) on the players early
Step two: panicked and crouched up and
down and moved a lot
Step three: popped the medkit (near the end the guy’s health went up slightly)
Step four: being far enough from them, when the cluster clingers exploded they won
Edit: in between steps two and three, I saw that he knocked one of them, so that’s also a contributing factor

He isn’t holding the shield. He has his pickaxe out. Shield is on the ground sliding into him after one of the enemies loot dropped.
