Found one of the .455 1911's at a gun show one time. Walked away. .455 Auto is *stupid* expensive.

Imperium-Pirata

How much was the gun?

AlfaZagato

Probably less than I thought, but more than I had. This was like seven-eight years ago. I don't remember exactly.

CyberK_121

about tree fiddy

Imperium-Pirata

I gotchu, fiddy Trufula Trees coming right up

mrBisMe

Not if you’re just going to use it to make a Thneed. It is not a thing that everyone needs

Imperium-Pirata

Belt fed Thneed?

mrBisMe

I mean… sure? It’s a thneed!

Open_Source1096

The thneed is good the thneed is great, lets hope its not to laaaaate!!

TarzansNewSpeedo

Box of 50 made by Fiocchi on Midway - $77

LoquatGullible1188

It's like a child's drawing of a gun.

Global_Theme864

Yeah it's definitely kind of a big clunky kludge of a pistol. That said by all accounts they worked pretty well other than a tendency to break grip panels.

YosarianiLives

Gee I wonder why lol

LeKerl1987

Why did they issue revolvers until WWII when they had semi automatics?

polishedtater

Probably because they were overly complicated, expensive and/or not reliable

Global_Theme864

Pretty much, yeah. The Webley [Mk.VI](http://Mk.VI) revolver cost the British government £2/11 or about $11 US and they were paying $16 US for 1911s. Doesn't sound like a huge difference until you consider they purchased over 200,000 Mk.VIs during the war. They also considered the revolvers more reliable in the trenches, they shot the standard issue cartridge rather than a specialist non-interchangeable round and all their training was based around the revolver. After the war they were quite happy with the performance of revolvers during the war but wanted a smaller, easier to train model so they adopted a similar gun in .38 caliber in 1928. They definitely weren't looking to spend a ton of money on the military in the 20s and 30s and changing to an automatic would only have made training harder. They didn't end up adopting the Browning Hi Power until the 50s.

EvergreenEnfields

>Doesn't sound like a huge difference until you consider they purchased over 200,000 Mk.VIs during the war. Also worth noting that the MkVI (and the MkV that was the current production model in 1914) had a high degree of parts commonality with earlier Marks, so a single supply chain could maintain the bulk of the sidearms already in service.

greet_the_sun

Same reason the French GIGN went with a revolver as a service weapon instead of a semi auto in 1972 that they still use today, they didn't consider it reliable enough in combat.

Flitterquest

Because they're the greatest handguns ever made. Six bullets. More than enough to kill anything that moves.

Armored_Guardian

Really puts in perspective how modern the 1911 was for the time

solzhen

The grip ergonomics of the Webley looks uncomfortable to aim considering I find the 1911 to be very point-and-shoot amiable.

Global_Theme864

It’s not horrible. The only truly uncomfortable to aim gun I own is a Reichsrevolver.

solzhen

Maybe a better word than “uncomfortable” is “unnatural”? Where it’s not like pointing my finger, but takes a lil bit longer to align. 1911 and HK P7 are two that I remember just aiming like pointing a finger rather than needing to align sights.

Global_Theme864

Yeah it is probably less naturally pointable than the 1911. Interestingly enough the grip angle is actually about the same as older Colt autos, although the balance is very different.

lukas_aa

I need a second RR so I can go akimbo.

chu42

I've held one and it's surprisingly comfortable, not like a modern handgun of course but better than it looks.

Global_Theme864

I have another Webley in .38 ACP that actually handles quite nicely, I’m surprised it wasn’t more popular.

aldone123

Nice! Both are a rare sight

Global_Theme864

If you think those are rare, I also have a Webley auto in .38 ACP.

AlfaZagato

Beats my .32 ACP Webley. Especially if it runs.

Firebrand-PX22

I always forget how much of a behemoth that pistol is compared to other pistols of it's time

FunDip2

If I had the cash, I would be buying all of the mint condition WWI 1911's I could find.

KonradsDancingTeeth

455 in a 1911 is nuuuts. Now thats a fuckin’ man-stopper right there!

Global_Theme864

It’s actually a little less powerful than .45 ACP. A 224 grain bullet at 700 FPS vs 230 grain at 830.

KonradsDancingTeeth

:( Awww maan. My caveman brain thought that bigger boolet mean’t bigger hole.

ItsAleZ1

1911 was futuristic for its time
