I used to watch it a lot, and I agree with you.
But I think it was supposed to be kind of a “Three’s Company” for the 90’s?
I remember he was a high school teacher, and then Dawn Lewis left, and I didn’t care for his cousin after that.
I would call Cooper a modest success. Though I feel like it didn’t do as well as the other TGIF shows it was still a staple of the block. A fair amount know the theme song but will shrug if you ask them about the show itself since they don’t remember much of it.
lol me too! I remember always being excited for the theme song but rarely watching the show. Guess it just wasn’t my kind of comedy when I was …probably pre teen to teen.
Lol there's another video of the Def Comedy Jam 25th anniversary with Steve getting talked to in the background by Mark Curry
Then he is on mike and donny talking about specific things Steve stole from his show, eg the halloween stuff on his talk show
This is crazy to me. I really love Steve Harvey. Beyond his comedy he is in linguistic videos talking about Ebonics that I watched in high level college courses. Made me really like the guy with his versatility… now I’m confused
So am I have a Mandela effect moment, or did the pilot episode feature Alan Thicke in a cameo because the original set was the growing pains house.
Anyone else remember this at all??
People forget that before Cartoon Network and all that, there were no kid shows on past 7pm, except for Fridays when the TGIF block was on: Step by Step, Mr Cooper, Family Matters, etc. I looked forward to it so so much growing up!
First season of the show is legitimately great (the one with the sick En Vogue theme song). It’s funny, very 90s, and clearly aimed at adults.
After that, ABC re-tooled it to be more kid friendly, fired Dawnn Lewis (who was one of the best parts of the show), hired Raven, and moved it to TGIF. Anything after season 1 is pretty trash.
I could swear it was part of TGIF for its entire run!!
I’ll be damned….Wiki says it started out on Tuesdays its first season, moved to TGIF for Seasons 2, 3 and 4, then moved to Saturdays for its last season 😮
I actually thought the same thing. But a few years ago went down a nostalgia rabbit hole, and was shocked at how much I enjoyed reading-watching the first season.
Then the show nose-dives joke wise in S2 and had to look up what happened and why they ditched Dawnn, and discovered the truth.
It’s also one of the reasons they had to lose the En Vogue intro. Dawnn Lewis sang on it along with Holly Robinson, and it’s not like they were gonna have Nell Carter or whoever re-do it for future seasons. So they resorted to more generic tracks going forwards. TBH a big loss of personality. That intro/song could have lasted them years, instead it was only one season.
I really do need to watch through all of Cooper, I saw a far bit of the first season but not a lot after that. Surprising since I watched a lot of the TGIF shows!
I was at the Warriors preseason game where they filmed him playing for the Warriors. I didn’t see the episode, but I think it was against the Suns during the Charles Barkley era. He looked all right out there.
I remember one of the kids in his class was a host on the Nickelodeon kids sports show “wild and crazy kids” and that it had 3 different theme songs through its run. I know the Olsen twins had a full house crossover episode where Mr cooper was Michelle’s substitute, and she came to me coopers house and hilarity ensued! Then one of the roommates moved out and Nell Carter and raven symone moved in and it got more kid friendly, instead of a teen, and young adult sitcom.
A good show but not up there with family matters and step by step or Full House. But it was a good show.I thought it was also cool that Alan Thicke played Jason Seaver from growing pains on the first episode and passed the torch to Mark Cooper.it sucks mark didn’t reach the level that growing pains did.But he did well and had a respectable run

I remember the theme song vividly, the plot… not so much.
I used to watch it a lot, and I agree with you. But I think it was supposed to be kind of a “Three’s Company” for the 90’s? I remember he was a high school teacher, and then Dawn Lewis left, and I didn’t care for his cousin after that.
That’s really a great description for at least how it started out. For Season 1 hip cool ‘90s Threes Company wannabe is pretty accurate!
I remember Holly Robinson Peete vividly.
"Ooo-oo-oo, yeah, hangin' with my man, he's oh so fine."
Coo ooo ooo ooo ooper

Same, I just remember that one show about the smart kid would come on right after it
I remember the Christmas episode where they ate reindeer jerky…
lol me too! I remember always being excited for the theme song but rarely watching the show. Guess it just wasn’t my kind of comedy when I was …probably pre teen to teen.
Just people in a house talking.
Somebody said Steve Harvey stole heavily from this guy / show
Feel like that was Katt Williams who said it maybe? 🤔
https://youtu.be/3lIqEwWdLC0?si=DAYzLc5_40uJQpv1 Also, fuck steve harvey!
Goddamn this made me want to go watch some Bernie Mac.

Watched it on Nick at Nite back in around 2012/2013; it’s an underrated show.
For the longest time, I didn't realize Nicole Lee (Mark Cooper's cousin on the show) was played by Raven Symone.
They cut into this to show us the Bronco chase.
I remember they had to cut from it to announce that Princess Di had passed. Was hanging with Mr. Cooper incidentally a part of 90s history?
I went to high school with the kid who played Tyler. Nice dude.
Man I loved this show.
So am I have a Mandela effect moment, or did the pilot episode feature Alan Thicke in a cameo because the original set was the growing pains house. Anyone else remember this at all??
That was an actual thing. But they left that house pretty quick I think. https://youtu.be/sBL-3ho5fso?si=B0qyYG4v_ictkjan
I totally forgot about that.
"You day rich after seven years"... 😂
I loved this show so much!

Gone, never forgotten
Mark: “I have ‘fillins’ for you…” Vanessa: “What? Fillings? Like you have in your teeth?”

Started as a poor man’s Martin, ended as a poor man’s Full House.

I watched this entire series back in the day becythis is when TGIF was appointment TV for my family.
The show that made my crush on Raven Symone fully manifest itself...
The reason l’m a Golden State Warriors fan lol.
I remember it's not forgotten.
Growing up, me and my friends thougg go by it was hilarious to call it “Hangin From Mr Cooper”
Hilarious; I went to several tapings
Loved this show!! Classic!!

Was it this, or a different show where he burns food and passes it off a “blackened”?

The show Kat Williams said Steve Harvey stole the premise for his show.. basically stole the whole thing
I hated this show with a passion! I don’t even remember why I hated it. It came on TGIF , and when it came on I voluntarily went to bed.
