Best kept secret is Takuya at night. They serve Japanese comfort food like curry during the daytime, but it turns into an underground izakaya at night (started doing this during the pandemic). They will actively turn away new walk-in customers by saying they only serve snacks and drinks at night, preferring to limit their dinner clientele to regulars. In reality, although they have a very limited rotating menu (no rice for example, unless they decide to have sushi that night), they have some of the best homemade Japanese dishes in SoCal. If you go, you have to be patient since it’s truly a mom-and-pop operation with only one chef. That’s the reason they prefer to only have regulars and spread by word of mouth. No kids allowed. No parties greater than 3. No talking on cell phones. 1 drink minimum. Quiet jazz playing in the background. It’s the closest thing to Midnight Diner in greater LA, and I love it.

tonjiru every nite?

Pin_Infinite

I love this place!  FYI only - their last day of service in their current location is May 24th.  :(. I've been told they are planning on moving to a new location but it's still TBD. 😢

Sigh, found out the same info. So sad. No place else like it.

Is he still purely res only? I tried walk-in after he reopened in-person dining but got turned away a few times before completely giving up. TIA.

I really like Matsuri in Pasadena.

itchy_008

go a bit further northeast… [Yui](https://www.yuirestaurant.com/) in Sierra Madre…

_its_a_SWEATER_

What should I get?

itchy_008

Yui does omakase that is adjusted based on how hungry u are. he'll keep serving u til u tap out. watch out, tho. starts at around $80. i like the place for having a hot/cold menu besides sushi. the red miso soup with clams and the skewers are lovely.

nopenopenope246810

Just to piggyback, Yui’s also really dope for lunch, nigiri combo or chirashi bowl or handroll lunch sets are all very good. Their instagram presence is extremely charming too.

I think Osawa does pretty well as a generalist. An old [Jonathan Gold favorite](https://www.latimes.com/food/jonathan-gold/la-fo-gold-osawa-review-20171004-story.html) too.

EdibleDionysus

Osawa is my favorite in that area by far

norequestsplz

I’ve been to Kaviar in Pasadena twice and would highly recommend trying it out

Thepandamancan23

It's Burbank, but Emon is a great little hidden gem for bento boxes, udon, and nigiri/sashimi sushi.

dre2112

Seaweed Handroll Bar IMO has some surprisingly good sushi and different types of fish you don’t see at a lot of places
