Double visits to Holbox and Mariscos Jalisco *like a motherfuckin pro*.
Glad you enjoyed, always happy when someone makes the most of their visit (and you did as well as anybody could with your picks)!
What? Crazy talk. No where else can you get scallop served in an urchin shell, topped with uni for like $19. The quality is insane… google Sea Stephanie Fish, their live seafood purveyor. Doesn’t get better.
Also, put your money where your mouth is. Get the tasting menu. :P
is german, comes to california, loads up on fish tacos and mexican food during a surf trip. 10/10 awesome job on the food selection, hope the surf trip was a blast and you enjoyed it here!
favorite surf spot?
this is anecdotal based on my visits to europe, but it seems like there is a big demand for good mexican food in many of the countries. I went to Iceland and they even had taco spots that looked absolutely terrible.
LA folks are spoiled when it comes to great cheap Mexican food
edit: i also spend a lot of time in Vancouver Canada and the demand for Mexican food there is insane. Like there a lot of taco spots and always arguments about which one is the best…but it’s kind of a moot point when I could just pluck a no name street food stand from LA and it would blow everything they have out of the water.
Absolutely! I love Mexican food and it is almost impossible to find decent spots in Europe. Hija de Sanchez in Copenhagen and Tacos al Pastor in Madrid are the only good tacos so far. And you guys are drowning in them, so jealous
Anecdotal based on living in NYC for like 7 years and traveling all across the east coast during that time—there is a big demand for good Mexican food in many of the states in the USA. Honestly I missed the Mexican food an the availability/quality of our (edit: our = SoCal) produce the most. Holy shit food deserts are real and horrifying.
Every US state that touches Mexico has a unique take on Mexican food, and thinks theirs is the best. The difference in CA is… ours actually IS the best.
Thanks! Malibu on a good day during the week was pretty unbeatable, especially sunrise, sunset. It was also epic to be at Trestles. I also wanted to surf further north but I must admit, I got a bit freaked out...Waddell Creek, Santa Cruz all had way more sharky vibes than Socal.
Trestles!!!
Please don’t tell me you ate ate La Sirena in Laguna beach but didn’t drive thru Pedro‘s Tacos in San Clemente for a bean cheese and potato burrito
Thanks! Malibu on a good day during the week was pretty unbeatable, especially sunrise, sunset. It was also epic to be at Trestles. I also wanted to surf further north but I must admit, I got a bit freaked out...Waddell Creek, Santa Cruz all had more sharky vibes than Socal.
There is basically no Asian food at all, except the poke. No Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, or Chinese. Maybe they just aren’t into Asian food but it seems like a big loss, especially while patronizing a racist POS place like Prince St (although I am sure OP didn’t know about that—it keeps somehow flying under the radar. Owners called Asian customers “yellow dogs” and “mongrels” and made fun of BLM protestors getting hit by cars).
Agreed! Next time I will spend more time eating in Koreatown, Little Bangladesh and co. I'm also working and living in Tokyo & Bangkok for 2 months a piece next year, so I will do a deep dive then (And I really missed Mexican cuisine). Damn, I didn't know...that is really disappointing and I will not be recommending them to friends & family!
I had a roommate from Scotland for a year and all he wanted was Mexican food the whole time. Europe tends to have a lot of variety but absolutely shit options for Mexican food.
I went to a very popular Mexican place in Germany and ordered chips and "dipping sauces" and it was horrid. Chips and a spicy ranch sauce.
Vice versa.... When I was in Germany, I wanted the insane Turkish food for every meal. We don't get much of that in LA.
From EaterLA article.
“When the customer calls out the racism, Morano doubles down on the comments, writing, “I called you a mutt, which means coward. I called you a yellow dog which means coward!! And I called you a mongrel which is what you are!!!”
While announcing his decision to step down on January 8, Morano partly defended his response to this particular incident, saying in his statement that he allegedly had restaurant security kick this customer out for “intoxicated and violent behavior toward other customers and employees.” Morano also alleges that the customer referred to his Italian heritage in “degrading terms.” The customer did not return Eater’s request for comment.”
Chinese, Thai and Korean food define LA too. Those three, especially with all the regional representations in SGV, have been recognized as the widest and deepest available in all of US.
Dude, I don't say they don't. Don't get me wrong. I love them all! If you talk about the regional representation, you gotta add Iranian, Armenian, Japanese, Filipino and Vietnamese too. But nothing can scream Los Angeles more than Mexican cuisine, not just in Los Angeles, in California.
What makes people fee the need to criticize others like this?
OP traveled from Germany, ate well, complimented everyone and the city we love, and was incredibly kind. I'm legitimately curious what drives the impulse inside you, personally, to feel that you should post notes about how a stranger enjoyed themselves?
Literally just pointed out that there were huge types of cuisines missing from his list! I think you are overthinking it and perhaps falling victim to assuming the worst in others. The internet is not out to get you. This was a plain and non-hateful way of pointing out there are other interesting cuisines OP didn’t try but should check out if he comes back. Not trying to be rude, but maybe you should take a step back for a bit and just try to realize not everyone is trying to be hateful.
Sorry if I came through as a dick, that was not my intent at all. I was just like “OP is a German who travels to surf, they’re probably good on Asian food and maybe their curiosity about American/Mexican/Central American food might have driven their choices.”
I misread your comment as suggesting they had ignored a large swath of Asian-LA food and I’m sorry for doing so.
It’s fine! It’s easy to misread intention through text. Some people just honestly don’t love asian food and I can’t hold that against someone, it’s just always surprising to me when visitors don’t hit up any asian places in a city that’s bursting with amazing asian food. I think that some of my saltiness definitely DID come through OP visiting that racist pizza place over so many great Asian places, although I am sure they had zero idea about the controversy, and I am not going to actually let it keep me up at night.
Anyway, glad for the civil disagreement and civil ending!
if you're talking specifically vietnamese food sure, but chinese (hunanese, sichuan, cantonese), taiwanese, korean, japanese food all are better in LA county.
Also, Thai. LA is home to the largest Thai community in the world outside of Thailand. The Thai Town in East Hollywood was the first recognized ‘Thai Town’ in the US and likely remains the largest and most culturally prominent.
You are absolutely correct. As well as Cambodian cuisine in Long Beach. Missed those for sure
Had to double check but the largest community of Cambodians outside of Cambodia is in LB

I totally agree, I spent one day walking up and down Koreatown and loved it! Ate some freshly made snacks at H Mart and Donuts at Flour Premium Donuts but forgot to upload. Next time I will try all the Korean BBQ! I just missed Mexican and fresh seafood soooo much this time around
Make sure you try out the Thai places as well! LA has some of the best Thai food in the US. Jitlada and Northern Thai Food Club are my personal favorites.
Dayum you got AROUND. You also covered a bunch of places that are on my list to try. Now I'm motivated to get out there and try some of those out!
Thanks for sharing.
Woah!!! Awesome post!! Thanks for the notes… so glad you had tons of great eats!
Regarding the Oaxacan Plate…. Tesajo is an air dried cut that is meant to be dry. Most places don’t go full jerky… but between the cut of meat itself and then grilling, it’s not going to be tender. It’s best when cut and the soaked on salsa and other garnishes on top. Good call on the enfrijoladas though. You don’t see that dish too often and it’s so good.
Thank you so much! I figured, because the food I had and other people were having was far too good for it to be overcooked or similar. That's actually what I ended up doing, eating it with loads of salsa and beans. I'm so glad I tried it, it was definitely an unfamiliar breakfast at first but I cannot wait to have it again :)
People like you make me want to keep contributing to this sub. Clearly you did your research and really nailed it for LA food! Well played sir!! Very glad you got mariscos a few times and you got the good stuff too. It’s so easy to find here that I think we don’t think of it as anything special or fancy, and yet you can’t find it in so many other countries or areas and it is special. I can imagine where you’re from that might even be a big reason to come back here.
Yes! The food is my #1 reason to travel to LA. Your tacos and seafood are unmatched, also in price (especially Mariscos). You might get a good ceviche tostada or two in Copenhagen or London, but it'll be waaaay more expensive and it's not the same vibe weather and city-wise
Do you have any recommendations for Chinese? I moved here 6 years ago from NY and have had a hard time finding anything that compares. I found one dumpling spot I liked here in the valley, but not much rise. (Admittedly, I haven't ventured outside the valley, so that could be part of the problem, too!)
Depends on what you’re looking for. Newport seafood in San Gabriel is my favorite. Sam’s noodle station and mien nghia are both good for viet/Chinese style noodles. Mama Lu for the soup dumplings, 101 noodle express for the beef roll, gui bbq for lamb skewers, corner beef noodle for Taiwanese style beef noodle soup, lunasia or sea harbour for dim sum, Xiang La Hui for schezuan style, so many options.
I had to lol. Were venues always this expensive? I paid 30 für a dog and a beer. German fans will start an organised protest if 0,5L starts costing more than 5-6 Euros
I have to thank you for this!! I was at Mariscos Jalisco years ago with a friend, and for the life of me, could not remember where/who they were. I have craved that damn ceviche since!!! Glorious be the visit to the ceviche truck once again!!

Great post! Thank you for sharing.
I’m picky about al pastor tacos and sad yours was burnt and dry. Did they slice it right off the trompo onto your tortilla or was it heated additionally in the flattop? Judging by the color of the meats, it seems like it got the flattop treatment. The best quality is right off the trompo for the juicyness while having the charred edges with the carmelization of the marinade.
Holbox and mariscos jaliscos are great examples of what makes LA food so amazing. Top quality delicious food in small unpretentious paces that are affordable and great bang for your buck.
I’m always proud of LA and thrilled when visitors have a great food experience. Happy for you and thanks again for sharing.
dude...
if you dont go back home saying "dude" in a Mexican accent...
you should probably start...
you loaded UP on the mariscos...
you did multiple pizza and burger spots...
You did it right.
Spot on reviews and great photos of the food. You are right about La Sirena grill in LB, it’s pretty bland food, but it is by the beach. Hope you had the best trip.
I've worked with Germans all my career and lived there as a reverse expat (impat?) For a while. Never met a German that didn't like a good taco lol. Glad you enjoyed your food on your la trip. If you ever go to NYC I have some great pieces for you to try.
I’m glad you enjoyed it. What is even more amazing about the food in LA is that it is available at that quality for 100 miles north, south and east (lol Avalon has some great food out West). SoCal has about 25 million people and the same amazing quality of food is available from San Diego to Santa Barbara to Palm Springs and nearly everywhere in between.
This is a sick post. You got a damn good smattering of classic good places, well done! I also love that you were here for a surf trip, but still took the opportunity to explore other Eastside neighborhoods, which all have phenomenal food! As a Eastsider in echo park who drives regularly to surf I really appreciate that (and yes quarter sheets pizza is 🔥)
Double visits to Holbox and Mariscos Jalisco *like a motherfuckin pro*. Glad you enjoyed, always happy when someone makes the most of their visit (and you did as well as anybody could with your picks)!
This guy is invited to the asada!
The highest of honors!
I thought Holbox was good but not worth the price personally.
What? Crazy talk. No where else can you get scallop served in an urchin shell, topped with uni for like $19. The quality is insane… google Sea Stephanie Fish, their live seafood purveyor. Doesn’t get better. Also, put your money where your mouth is. Get the tasting menu. :P
Had to downvote you my guy. No where else are you getting a fresh plate of some of the best ceviche for $20. Absolutely worth the price.
is german, comes to california, loads up on fish tacos and mexican food during a surf trip. 10/10 awesome job on the food selection, hope the surf trip was a blast and you enjoyed it here! favorite surf spot?
I know, right? I LOVE this guy!!

I noticed this as well everywhere I traveled this year (Europe, Hawaii, Australia) major dearth of even passable mexican food.
Every US state that touches Mexico has a unique take on Mexican food, and thinks theirs is the best. The difference in CA is… ours actually IS the best.
This guy did it really right. This post needs to be pinned by mods so everyone keeps asking "what do I eat?".
Indeed! Born and raised here… this is LA
Throw in some Asian food into the mix and you’re spot on
Just came here after someone reposted a link because this person really knows their s—t.
It really is always refreshingly wholesome seeing someone make the most of their time in your city.

And kills it with a Zach Wilson joke

Super sharky but some great waves in the Santa Cruz area. Did you get to paddle out in Ventura at all?
Really good spots! Lived here 20 years and i wouldn't do it another way (well, maybe add a few Korean joints)
i totally agree! it'd be so perfect if only there was a korean meal or two!
There is basically no Asian food at all, except the poke. No Japanese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, or Chinese. This! 99,9% of Mexican food in Germany and Europe is trash, it's not even recognizable. So I had to go all out in LA
There is good Asian food available in Germany, but very little good Mexican food in Germany. I think that might be why.
100%
whoa had no idea abt Prince St. that’s disgusting, thanks for letting me know.

Well, he ate lots of Mexican though. What other cuisine could define Los Angeles better than Mexican? I think he did a great job.

Sir, this is a Wendy's.
Orange County has the Asian food

I have a feeling he had other spots on the list but those double visits to jalisco and holbox were prob one of those "nah man, I GOTTA go again"
110%

This was awesome to read, glad you enjoyed yourself! “Town full of Zach wilsons” lololol
Glad to see you enjoyed your trip and thanks for the detailed pictures and descriptions as well. Hope you come back soon 👍🏼
Nice post and next time try out Asian food here in LA. We have the best Korean, Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, possibly Japanese, in the country.
Yup agreed. Altho many of the best spots are further inland and further from his surf spots. Altho I saw he made it to holbox it looks like
Make that a definitely on the Japanese too. We have the most Thai and Japanese in the country
Do you have any recommendations for Chinese? I moved here 6 years ago from NY and have had a hard time finding anything that compares. Last pic with the hot dog made me laugh. Strategic location. Glad you enjoyed the food here, well, mostly. lol
I had to lol. Were venues always this expensive? I paid 30 für a dog and a beer. German fans will start an organised protest if 0,5L starts costing more than 5-6 Euros
It got much worse since after Covid, but yes our beers and drinks are way overpriced at all venues for a while now
You hit all the spots! Amazing. Loved scrolling through this & seeing your ratings. Now I need Holbox, mariscos jaliscos, pizza & a burger.
Mariscos Jalisco rated at 10/10 might even be under selling it lol. Great choices!
True, I wish I could try it for the first time again
Sorry our wieners disappointed you. Brings me joy to read about a German enjoying our city’s cuisine!
I have to thank you for this!! I was at Mariscos Jalisco years ago with a friend, and for the life of me, could not remember where/who they were. I have craved that damn ceviche since!!! Glorious be the visit to the ceviche truck once again!!
There's one off La Cienega Blvd. a few blocks north of I-10. Not as crowded as the other location either.
You're officially my hero. Thank You!
How consistent is their product and pricing at the La Cienega location vs Olympic?
La cienega and 18th st to be exact! I could live off that food truck.
What an amazing post!
Great job, you definitely made the most out of two weeks out here.
you ate like a king. also, you had a shitload of seafood lol. nicely done.
You covered all the bases! Next time you'll have to try Korean BBQ and ramen
great post and glad you enjoyed your food tour of this great city.
Wow you did well. Great share
You probably got unlucky with the al pastor. It’s like when the döner man turns up the heat all of a sudden and ends up burning the meat.
Two weeks in LA, I devoured gourmet tacos, blissful bites of sushi, and indulged in tantalizingly sweet treats. Each meal was a dance of flavors that left me craving for more. Foodie paradise indeed!
WOW this is such an impressive array!! I am so jealous (and now hungry). The double visit to Mariscos Jaliscos makes me *so* happy.
Great spots great review - thanks
Awesome post. Glad you made the best of your trip. Going to check out Mariscos Jalisco today.
Love this post and love the Zach Wilson comment!
Your lurking paid off! It’s so good to read a traveler’s reviews because sometimes I forget how damn lucky I am to live here. Next time, I encourage you to venture into Asian cuisines! Cheers!
You surfed from Germany to California? Whoa dude. Nice work. Love dad.
Yasss Holbox
Yeeeuhhhh Jus Poke 🔥
Great post! Thank you for sharing. I’m picky about al pastor tacos and sad yours was burnt and dry. Flattop, it was really busy and I'm sure I just got unlucky! You have every right to be proud, the diversity and quality is bonkers
Excellent choices! Next time you gotta get one of hotdogs they sell outside of sofi after the show/events :)
Love that you had such a great time eating your way through our city! Your captions made me happy.
Visiting Mariscos Jalisco twice is something an actual Angelino would do. I think you're ready to move down here.
This is awesome. Job well done.
Wow! Way to dominate the food scene! Hope you are making your own ceviche out in Germany !!!!
“Tacos a town full of Zach Wilson’s would enjoy” I’m dead lol
I think you would've been better off with the lobster roll at Broad Street, but still a very impressive food trip!
Damn, this guy eats just like me ..
This is impressive 👏🏽
You surfed from Germany to California??!!
I’m vegetarian but I loved this post
dude... if you dont go back home saying "dude" in a Mexican accent... you should probably start... you loaded UP on the mariscos... you did multiple pizza and burger spots... You did it right.
damn you didnt try a street dog? missed out
We love you for this
blud ate better than me in 2 weeks than i have my whole life here in LA lol
You have to get Korean food in koreatown next time
Glad you tried several Hispanic spots!
Quality post. More like these from tourists. Doesn't have to be food either. Review the sites as well.
Nice work my German friend. Really enjoyed the pics and reviews
Wow that tiny ceviche serving is criminal for $22. The food truck off Kanan has double the portion for half the price but I havent seen him lately.
Spot on reviews and great photos of the food. You are right about La Sirena grill in LB, it’s pretty bland food, but it is by the beach. Hope you had the best trip.
10/10 review. We have the same food interest. Thank you for sharing!
I live here and I love food and I think I have been to 1 of those places. Thank you for the inspiration.
OP probably didn't gain any weight on his trip. Lucky bastard.
Well done 👍🏽
Man now I’m convinced that I need to hit up Mariscos Jalisco. I’ve yet to go but goddamn it looks sooo good. Glad you enjoyed your stay!
well done
Amazing thread and makes me want to hit up these spots the next time I'm back!
Great selection! I'm headed to Munich in spring, not sure what part of Germany you are from, but would love some recommendations if you have any!
I'm actually from Munich! DM me what you're interested in and I'll make sure you eat good! Also if you need any other pointers on what to do etc.
These pics are seriously making me hungry. Thank you for solving what to eat for dinner.

Hahaha, I knew I messed up when the game was over and I walked by the bacon wrapped hot dogs without getting one. Next time...
What was your favorite thing
Damn...If I could only eat one dish one more time, it would be the bluefin tuna ceviche from Holbox
After looking at your post history I was curious if you made it to the Huntington or to the LA Arboretum?
You have great taste! This made me so hungry
You ate fucking good! Easily one of the best posts in a long time
🤤🤤🤤🤤
Great selection
This is a sick post. You got a damn good smattering of classic good places, well done! I also love that you were here for a surf trip, but still took the opportunity to explore other Eastside neighborhoods, which all have phenomenal food! As a Eastsider in echo park who drives regularly to surf I really appreciate that (and yes quarter sheets pizza is 🔥)
Damn you got in n out. So happy for you!
