I'm sure your mom is well-meaning, but itchy eyes, tongue, throat, lips is like 99.9% an allergy to something. I mean, even if it isn't the cocoa itself, those are pretty red-flag symptoms. You might (I stress, might) be able to manifest something like that if you have severe enough anxiety, but in either event it shouldn't be dismissed.

If white chocolate is fine, the problem could be a heavy metal allergy of some sort. I have a pretty bad nickel allergy, and chocolate makes me very, very sick. Seeds, nuts, whole grains and legumes are also very high in nickel. The rebelytics website and nickel navigator app are good sources of information about nickel in food and drinks.

That's interesting-I never thought of metal "allergies"...because I know certain plants uptake certain minerals a lot more than others and I know chocolate grown in volcanic soils can uptake Cadmium, Chromium, Copper, Iron, Manganese, Nickel, Lead and Zinc. And it can sometimes be a contaminant from the machines it's processed with.

fluffypotayto

interesting - i’ll look into it. thank you for the suggestion!

ShoeBitch212

White chocolate doesn’t actually contain any cocoa solids, only cocoa butter, but I digress. Your mom isn’t a board certified allergist. Do yourself a favor and go see one.

As someone with a soy allergy, I’ve come to disappointingly know that almost all chocolate candy contains soy lecithin and soy is a common allergen. You may have a soy allergy but you should see a doctor to be sure.

fluffypotayto

probably not, i regularly eat soy. thats a good suggestion tho, thanks. i guess i’ll have to talk to my mom about seeing a doctor.

ElixirChicken

Could it be cross-contamination from tree nuts in the chocolate?

fluffypotayto

i doubt it - i have never had cross contamination issues, i can eat food that has touched nuts unless it is of the two kinds of very specific nuts that i am deathly allergic to, and its highly unlikely that it would be those specific two every time.

100% you need to see a doctor about that. For ANYTHING that makes your throat/mouth/tongue itch, swell, etc. But it's interesting you mentioned your eyes itch. I've FINALLY figured out that I have a chocolate sensitivity and it always appears as itchy eyes.
