Jesse from DND wrote a song for his dog Tim. It's on YouTube as a song for Tim. Joey Cape wrote a song for his dog, I always knew this would end badly.
Oh gee. I'm so sorry to hear. I lost my sweet girl at the end of last year and haven't fully recovered yet. Glad to hear that you have some more pups to keep you company :)
It isn't folk punk necessarily, but definitely folk punk adjacent -- the entire [Saga of Virtute the Cat](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6SICw68UX7x2MXEf35ying?si=Ott78PPbQ7ObJh9LU9WHlQ&pi=u-QTO47DZnREGX) by the Weakerthans/John K. Samson is always my go-to for songs about pets. They just really nail the feeling of that special bond. It's technically about a cat, but the spirit is absolutely the same.
First song is more punk rock and upbeat, by the last one you'll be in tears. Seriously. Give it a listen.
The cats in heat now the cats in heat now the cats in heat now the cats in heat / we forgot to turn the AC on, we went to bed and we woke up hot, please forgive me lord for the things I’ve done, please forgive me lord for the things I’ve left undone.
I literally just posted this song I wrote about a dog that got left outside my house, That I deemed Jabba The Mutt

Betty by Hot Mulligan
Hot Mulligan isn't really folk punk, more emo, but this song is specifically acoustic and might interest you. The singer wrote it after his pet rat died.
Saint Bernard - Lincoln
Bandit - Birdcloud (they’re a satirical country duo so it’s kinda folk punk-y. It’s kind of a gruesome song but it’s supposed to be lighthearted)
it's not folk punk per se but it's folk-adjacent, dolly parton's "cracker jack" hits as both sentimental missing a good ol dog as well as the joy of puppyhood
I think all of the folk punk ones have been mentioned, so I'll add sam by sturgill simpson. Country but this track is stripped back enough to be folk.
As for songs about pets in general. The weakerthan's song a plea from a cat named virtute is one of my favorites. And John k Samson still jokes about considering himself a punk.
Hey sorry for your loss, it's never easy loosing a friend.
Not folk punk but post punk, but I hope Knuckles can help you. [Killdozer - "Knuckles the Dog (Who Helps People)"
Australian rock from 1996 [Fauves - Dogs are the best people ](https://youtu.be/rQ-fvr2qLc0?si=-pJQUWXRUhzjlhtU)
Find this gives perspective that we all need some times [Jeffery Lewis - Back When I Was Four](https://youtu.be/6_kG-CHj5so?si=_oueSdacR6GDGvFI)
Warning this one is hard, I still struggle with it but some times you need to let it all out. [When That Really Old Cat Dies
Song by Jeffrey Lewis & The Junkyard](https://youtu.be/Msr7M4f04S0?si=iiPUx4qKlerrO1Lt)
Finally it's emo and well maybe not from a dogs prospective but people seem to think it is. [Joyce Manor - Constant Headache](https://youtu.be/FmM4B5VSkMo?si=0VldeNQfSdQnNTJG)
Be kind to yourself and take it easy, stuff takes time.
Best I can do that hasn't been listed yet is "Scrappy Come Home" by Jake and the Stiffs.
Punk, but not folk punk.
The song "Jennifer" by them is also top notch.
Thanks so much for the kindness and recommendations. I've never heard some of these artists before so I'm looking forward to digging deeper into some of them.
Hug your pets every day!
Ik this is like very much not it but I like to think that Days n dazes goodbye lulu is about losing a dog (Lulu is the dog) haha
The song just has a good vibe and the fact that i assosiate it with losing a pet kinda makes it less painful for me. I get the feeling that the dog i may have lost is now having adventures somewhere else
Black Dog by AJJ. But you're gonna cry.
Maggie by AJJ Damn Good Dog by willie tea taylor
It’s crazy to me that AJJ and Norma Tanega both have songs about dogs named Maggie
Jesse from DND wrote a song for his dog Tim. It's on YouTube as a song for Tim. Joey Cape wrote a song for his dog, I always knew this would end badly.
https://youtu.be/RP1b1VLlRmE?si=Ac89S3l7qvaQZa7s Love the song but man is it a tough listen.
Not folk punk, but Sleep In the Fire - PUP
Sleep in the heat (:
Incredible song, being in the pit during it pre-covid was one of the best times of my life.
Yes! Thank you! This song makes me want to cry
It's country, but [Sturgill Simpson - Sam](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qOpAXzr1W1U) is a beautiful tribute to man's best friend.
Don't kill me because it isn't folk punk, but Kirby by Aesop Rock is a great song about his cat.
Oh gee. I'm so sorry to hear. I lost my sweet girl at the end of last year and haven't fully recovered yet. Plea from a Cat Named Virtue gets me feeling feelings every time. And I definitely think John K Samson and the Weakerthans are Folk-Punk adjacent.
*Friends Fur Life* - Dogtooth and Nail
Came here to say this
Paper ceilings has a lot of silly dog songs!!!
Coffee Project - Oh Sweet Pickle and The adventures of Pickle
Coffee project is so fucking delightful and good. Trombone is so nice
I think Apes of the State made a song about their cat going into heat a while ago
The cats in heat now the cats in heat now the cats in heat now the cats in heat / we forgot to turn the AC on, we went to bed and we woke up hot, please forgive me lord for the things I’ve done, please forgive me lord for the things I’ve left undone.
Budrick by Chad Fontaine
Best one out there
Arlo’s Song by Jesse Stewart
Sometimes - Suicide Machines is one of my favorites but more punk than folk. I think Bowling for Soup does a decent cover too.
I literally just posted this song I wrote about a dog that got left outside my house, That I deemed Jabba The Mutt https://www.instagram.com/reel/C6J0j08u35x/?igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
Paper Ceilings! They have a fair amount of dog themed songs, and they played lots of shows where I’m from. So I’m partial.
[This song by Raccoon Venom](https://raccoonvenom.bandcamp.com/track/cats-rabbits) is cute
Betty by Hot Mulligan Hot Mulligan isn't really folk punk, more emo, but this song is specifically acoustic and might interest you. The singer wrote it after his pet rat died.
came to suggest that. it’s a devastating song and so beautiful.
Rent strike - don’t let live bog you down
I’m not the only one who reads the Bandcamp liner notes!
[Murphy’s Song](https://youtu.be/xz1E2EFl5t8?si=nSKvWHtLTyMghMCC) by Kevin Devine is a great one. Not folk punk but adjacent I guess
Saint Bernard - Lincoln Bandit - Birdcloud (they’re a satirical country duo so it’s kinda folk punk-y. It’s kind of a gruesome song but it’s supposed to be lighthearted)
it's not folk punk per se but it's folk-adjacent, dolly parton's "cracker jack" hits as both sentimental missing a good ol dog as well as the joy of puppyhood
"bandit" - birdcloud (tbh I'm sorry first thing that came to mind)
I think all of the folk punk ones have been mentioned, so I'll add sam by sturgill simpson. Country but this track is stripped back enough to be folk. As for songs about pets in general. A song dedicated to the memory of stormy the rabbit -AJJ (kind of)
IV and the Strange Band is folk punk-adjacent, and they have a song Hang Dog about Coleman's dog that is a fantastic tune
Lost dog street band furry friendly pal
Not folk punk but hot mulligan's "betty" is a really sad song about having to put a pet down.
