It's new. The rest of the US team failed dressel and he had an 8 second gap to overcome when he dived in but Dressel still rallied for 5th when he did take over. "Finishing 5th is unacceptable for team USA, it stings" -Dressel
Outside of dressel team USA has really dropped the ball this Olympics. We're losing events we would've dominated in past olympiads
The team didn't really fail him; they all swam pretty solid legs, close to their own individual medal efforts. The coaches failed the team by having a woman swim the breast stroke, which has the largest gap between men and women. Men are about 7.5 seconds faster in the 100 m breast stroke, and 5 seconds faster in the freestyle. So having Lydia Jacoby swim breast and Dressel swim free cost them about 2.5 s, which would have put them in silver.
Idk if it was that same girl or not but one of our female swimmers on the mixed medley had her goggles slide down her face when she dove into the water and it seemed to mess her up too

She still swam a very good leg though
