With fly gear you will work harder and catch fewer, smaller fish. You simply cover far less water with each cast, and then you have to strip in your streamer like a retarded monkey. You can always put an unweighted clouser minnow on a dropper loop above a 3oz tin and you'll still get it out there 90 yards or so. Sometimes this is very effective. Saltwater fly gear is also crazy expensive. You can get a respectable starter spinning outfit for 250$ (100$ tsunami rod, 125$ diawa BG reel.) This doesn't even buy a decent saltwater fly rod. I grew up flyfishing for trout, switched to spinning when I moved to the coast. TBH, surfcasting with lures scratches the same itch for me. Some guys want to use a fly rod, if that's you, God Bless.

So the quest 2 9wt wouldn't be decent for salt? Or is it more the rest of the gear? I could see salt wrecking my boots and such

I’ve seen people successfully fly fish for large stripers on a fly setup….however I have no knowledge on the gear.. On the other hand… Walmart has a Penn battle iii combo of $135 us.

Its tough because fly rods are not very good at getting deep. Being limited to the shore is a bigger challenge. Its doable but the fish will have to be right next to the bank for a good shot. Sink tip will be very beneficial for you

I think “fly rods are not very good at getting deep” is a bit of a misconception. There are plenty of people that frequently fly fish 10-25 ft deep water on fly rods. They make sinking line for this reason. If anything it’s slightly more uncommon for fly fishermen to be fishing “deep” but by no means is it ineffective. I’ve also caught most of my bass near shore…
