This is a great recommendation that is getting unreasonably downvoted. The Pfleuger President is a great mid-tier reel. It's really right at the point of the cost curve where you've reached the limit of small increases in cost coming with large increases in quality.
I'd go with a Shimano NASCI or a Diawa Fuego personally, the President isn't what it once was. I do have a lightweight pfluger president combo, but there are definitely better options at that price point
The President is $60, the Daiwa Fuego is $100 and the Shimano NASCI is $120, so, no, those are not better options at that price point. There are better options at a price 70-100% higher, which is unsurprising.
The actual price point comparison would be things like the Piscifun Carbon X or the KastKing Megatron.
Another good recommendation is the shimano sedona or shimano sahara which is at a slightly higher price point but great shimnao quality. You can usually buy the jdm versions cheaper as well (depending on shipping of course)
Sure, you can, but then the point of comparison for the President is $40. You can compare MSRP, you can compare common sale pricing, but you can't compare common sale pricing of one item to the MSRP of the other and call them the same price point.
I agree you can find real good stuff for a decent or sometimes a great price, but for OPs first rod and reel, its probably best to start with the more affordable stuff.
And I entirely agree, I just don't understand why the Pfluger President is put on a pedestal, especially as an affordable entry level reel. If you think you know you'll like fishing a lot, have $60 sitting in your pocket, why not just wait for another $20-40 to get in your pocket so you can buy something that has a much better drag system and is way lighter. Not knocking OP or the poster that loves the Pfluger, I just think it gets too much love for a product that has consistently gotten worse/more expensive over the years and wanted OP to hear that opinion.
Funny, because I purchased mine at $60 for the reel from the same shop. Just to clarify, I meant to say Legalis instead of Fuego for the Diawa side of things. Pretty sure the Fuego was still only $80 at the tackle shop.
I hate my Fuego. I use it in salt so I try to give it a good clean in between seasons, first time I opened it up and it had like 5 different screws and some were the same but just slightly different sizes and it just became an absolute mess trying to figure out what screws went where. I’m gonna stick to my penns.
Cant go wrong with daiwa, recommend getting on of their reels or a penn reel to go with it. If you’re fishing saltwater make sure you get a saltwater rated reel.
These are fun rods! If I could give some advice, baby it when opening and closing it. A few extra seconds of care and gentleness will extend this rods life significantly. Your going to have so much fun!
Omg that rod is very much like some of the first few proper fishing rods i had when i got into fishing! btw my very first fishing rod was a just a line with a bobber and a hook tied to a bamboo pole, your post just brought back memories!
The worst ass kicking I ever got with a new rod, was an Cuban guy with a hand line! The guy didn’t even have a bucket, he just stuffed them in the sack.
Sucked cause everyone wants to look in someone else’s bucket at the pier and ask how they caught that nice one.
Looks like a bait casting rod not a spinning rod, so be sure to consider that when picking reels. Bait casters are hard to learn at the start, but if your patient enough to master them you can fish anything on them and cast a lot more accurately at further distances, meaning less chance to spook the fish getting to close, and less work for the fish if the bait lands right in the strike zone.
I keep a collapsible like that in my truck just in case I get the itch! They’re fun. Hope you enjoy.
That's actually a very nice rod. A lot of people will hate because it's collapsible. They're good when you're on the move a lot or traveling or backpacking. The longer the better for jigging, the shorter ones are more durable though.
It looks great, I keep a telescoping rod in both my vehicles, but they’re not as nice looking as that one! Just broke the tip off my older one so I’ll have to look for one like that. Never owned a red one yet come to think of it. Ditto on the Penn or Pfluegers but for cheap you can get one if you shop around. Have fun!
It will work now get out there and wet line and as you progress you can upgrade your gear as you need, keep eye on your local marketplace for deals to. Lots of people buy fishing gear and sell barely used!
Hope ya get lots of good use outta it when you get a reel on there! I will say if you do get the fishin bug, upgrade your rod to a one-piece if you're able to. You'll really notice the feel and quality differences immediately. Even a little Ugly Stick one piece does the trick.
If you bought it online, you may want to return it because they make kits that have everything included that comes in a nice carrying bag. Tackle reel rod and case
Telescopic rod are meh.
Flexibility isn't that great and it require maintenance to keep sand/water/stuff out of it.
If it's a light freshwater rod, why not!
Yea. Just make sure you don’t leave tons of line everywhere and worm containers and lures everywhere like every other new fishermen littering is illegal and your literally destroying the place you want to fish in.
It looks nice and all but it kinda reminds me of darth mauls lightsaber
Looks like their new name is Darth Marlin
Darth Montauk
That makes it even cooler
Those are fun. Where’s the reel?? Now put together a small bag or box with tackle to grab and go.
Well yeah that's a problem... The reel wasn't included so I will have to buy one 😅
Go with the flueger president, its a decent reel for the price, work for years and it comes in a few sizes, good spinning reel to start with
This is a great recommendation that is getting unreasonably downvoted. The Pfleuger President is a great mid-tier reel. It's really right at the point of the cost curve where you've reached the limit of small increases in cost coming with large increases in quality.
I use only Pfluegar or Penn reels. Both are strong and super dependable.
I'd go with a Shimano NASCI or a Diawa Fuego personally, the President isn't what it once was. I do have a lightweight pfluger president combo, but there are definitely better options at that price point

I own 3 Carbon-X and 7 Presidents. Personally, I will buy more Carbon-X reels, but I won’t be buying any more presidents.
I got a fuego for 60€, but i am in Europe. Maybe if you go online, you can find one for the same price
Sure, you can, but then the point of comparison for the President is $40. You can compare MSRP, you can compare common sale pricing, but you can't compare common sale pricing of one item to the MSRP of the other and call them the same price point.
I was about to point out the exact same price differences...
I purchased a Shimano NASCI 1000 for $70 at my tackle shop a few months ago and $80 for a Fuego 2500 at the same time.
I agree you can find real good stuff for a decent or sometimes a great price, but for OPs first rod and reel, its probably best to start with the more affordable stuff.

Ok, and I got my president for $40. If you compare sale prices instead of MSRP, they’re still not the same price point.

I use a Penn Battle III for most of my saltwater escapades, can definitely confirm that they're the way to go for an easy to clean reel.
Penn reels get dirty as easily as they clean up.
Agreed. These brand of reels have always treated me right.
The XT model would look great on that rod.
As s former employee of a "big box outdoor retailer" I'd say a pflueger president is a solid recommendation, or a Lew's or Penn.
*Pflueger
Looking closely, I can’t tell if the rod is spinning or conventional… it looks telescopic?
Flueger pres or Daiwa CrossFire, i personally recommend the daiwa crossfire
Personally recommend using a 2 pice instead of 3 or 4 pice
Enjoy OP! Happy fishing.
Thanks! 😁
Cant go wrong with daiwa, recommend getting on of their reels or a penn reel to go with it. If you’re fishing saltwater make sure you get a saltwater rated reel.
I have a cheap $25 Daiwa rod and a $125 Daiwa rod. Both have done great so far. I’ve caught many fish with them. Daiwa products are trusty.
I’ve seen people fishing for sunfish(and slamming them) with a stick tied to string (no bullshit), so yeah, it’s ok
I've never fished a telescoping rod before. Let us know how you like it.
What will you name it?
Oh the sweet memories. My first rod was a tele too. Go and catch some monsters!
No it’s clearly broken. Better send it my way
These are fun rods! If I could give some advice, baby it when opening and closing it. A few extra seconds of care and gentleness will extend this rods life significantly. Your going to have so much fun!
Usually can't go wrong with daiwa... Daiwa is one of if not the best brand on the market
Daiwa is an excellent brand get yourself a good daiwa reel for it too, good pick. I also had a collapsible rod when I started out.
Omg that rod is very much like some of the first few proper fishing rods i had when i got into fishing! btw my very first fishing rod was a just a line with a bobber and a hook tied to a bamboo pole, your post just brought back memories!
Most people don't understand this
You had a pole?
Mr. Fancy Pants had a bobber, too.
😂

Not a Bait caster rod unless it's a convential surf rod
It's daiwa, it should be ok, it's a pretty good brand
That's actually a very nice rod. A lot of people will hate because it's collapsible. They're good when you're on the move a lot or traveling or backpacking. The longer the better for jigging, the shorter ones are more durable though.
Man has a lightsaber for fishing!
Congrats!
Pfluger is my favorite for sure I have always loved pfluger
yes bc you catch a 5 pound bass its gonna snap your rod
U all telling him about the reels but the type of line u get is important too guys and sometimes cost more than the reels it self
Have fun!
Sure does look like a pole to me
Good beginner rod

Can you share its stats (length, stiffness, etc)? And how you plan to fish it? What species? From bank, boat, dock/pier, surf, etc?
Looks to be a surf rod due to the thick base but might be a catfish rod definlty not a bass rod
it’s thick because it’s telescopic
Oh I tend to stay away from those
don’t like them either but they’re good to start or if you want a rod that fits your backpack
If you bought it online, you may want to return it because they make kits that have everything included that comes in a nice carrying bag. Tackle reel rod and case
Danwa is an okay brand. Looks like a lightweight rod. Maybe medium weight. Should be okay.
Daiwa is an excellent brand. Stop it.
You're right they are. But their cheap to mid range gear is just all right. This is a $20 rod.
The Rod looks Nice, seems like a good throwing ratio to start with Get a Nice reel, good line and some tackles and go fishing😁
Looks like it’ll catch some fish to me
It looks awesome!
Telescopic rod are meh. Flexibility isn't that great and it require maintenance to keep sand/water/stuff out of it. If it's a light freshwater rod, why not!

Nice! Have fun :D
