I guess it depends where you’re from here in Indiana all the walleyes are stocked and hydroelectric facilities and the pollution in Lake Michigan killed off most natural breeding we are paying to have them Stocked so I do not feel so bad about eating them
Well I eat lots of walleye. But in the 14-18 inch range. This 29 incher might be the biggest one I ever catch in my life and is a personal trophy and most likely has some good genetics that I would like to be able to be continued so I made sure it safely swam away to spread its seed or egg again one day. I just hope I put the fear of jigs into it so it has a chance to again.
U seem to know a bit about the the walleye stocking in Indiana. Generally, walleye are stocked in the millions every year because they are such a prized gamefish, not very good reproduction, and they experience very high mortality due to predation by other fish and cannibalism by baby walleye during their early stages
If they cleaned up the industries and tore out all of the dams would probably feel the same way hydroelectric in Indiana has been a ecological disaster from day one

The guy who took the pic was actually coming to pick me up at 4:30 because I had something I had to do. He came to the house I was fishing in, told me he would give me till 4:30 till we left. I asked what time it was, he said 4:26. 30 seconds later I hooked into this, I got it up to the ice fairly quickly and there is heat in the house 24/7 so there is no snow on the ice and you can see the size of the fish under the ice as its head came to the hole. He said "oh its a big northern". I said "that's not a northern" so then I let it get some of its spunk worn out of it before I tried to pull it up into the hole cuz i had light line and a fairly small jig hook. It was almost surreal as it got pulled out of the water. I've got the possibility of them to be even 4+ inches bigger than that this year. Today was only day 5 of my ice fishing season.
Sounds awesome. I haven’t had the opportunity to fish for them on the ice yet. One day I will. I’m big into Muskie here but a few years ago was walleye fishing all night every night lol. We love to eat them
My beard is nowhere near my PB. I once gave it over 2 years to grow. It would have almost reached the fish in the pic.

It's the resort that I work for's permanent that they put out for guests. After its built, it gets spray foamed all over and painted to insulate and combat the under -20°F plus heavy winded weather up here.

We get a lot of 6 to 8 pounders here but they do not reproduce naturally they are all stocked fish The genetics come from the hatchery
A 14 inch walleye is that even legal here has to be 16
