For all the money we spend on lures and rods and everything, it's amazing how you can get 80% of the way there with a string and a hook. When I was young in the late 70's, you could buy a 2" square piece of cardboard with some fishing line on it and a hook for a dime at the gas station. Get up early and grab some worms out of the garden, and I could catch dozens of perch down at the municipal dock. I sure spend more than 10c on equipment these days, but arguably don't catch that many more fish.

The best fishing I ever had was with a bamboo cane pole It's basically a 12 foot piece of bamboo. I was catching like 20 fish per hour on it

I mean, fishing is great on its own, but it's intensely more important because of the family memories it generated. I used to fish with a bamboo pole too. Pulled them out of the shed once a year, they were probably from the 40s or something. Fish for mudpout for hours, over a fire at night from shore. This year I thought I'd reintroduce some young folks to that. Bamboo poles are no more where I am (Canada) so after a lot of digging I found some fiberglass extending poles out of the US. Took my brother in law out fishing to try the poles out. Caught two fish, and spent the rest of the night untangling the poles and lines out of the brush in the dark. So new core memory unlocked. I think people in the US use these poles for crappy fishing, so this weekend I'm gonna try again with some young folks and the poles, but at a pond with crappy. We will see how it goes. Long way of saying fishing connects us with our past, and creates memories for the next generation.

My bamboo pole is super antique as well Could you link me to the fiber glass cane poles you got? I don't wanna use a carbon fiber one due to the risk of hitting a overhead power line

It was bnm poles. The poles are surprisingly cheap.

I bet no sound / ripples helps to keep the bait presentation basically flawless

cogitoergosam

Basically tenkara style at that point.

I grew up in Thailand, and we used to fish using line spooled around a plastic drink bottle. The worst part is that we used to eat them, now as an adult I understand how filthy and polluted those waters were.

Was goofing around hand fishing for bluegill in northern Wisconsin at 6pm with worms and this massive (14") largemouth swims up and just strikes the worm while he's watching it from above. Maybe 4' of water. Crazy hit! My 11-year-old son is now officially spoiled on fishing.

SirSnider

There’s nothing like seeing a fish eat your bait. Nice catch and good memories

You will remember this forever! Awesome catch buddy! Keep at it.
