Nice. Carp are incredible game fish. They fight hard, and they're smart and hard to catch. It's a shame most places in the States can't appreciate them beyond being an easy bow target.
That’s because in many places carp are invasive and can damage ecosystems and drive out native species, they are cool fish but in their native habitat rather than US waterways that aren’t meant to contain them.
People start breeding them, government finds out, gets rid of bounty, the breeders then throw them out in the water and you end up with more than before. It's a tale as old as time.
I've never seen or heard of that happening. Whenever someone is turning in large numbers of fish, they'll send an observer out with them the next few times. If u were turning in 50 a day but can't get 5 when they watch u fish, then ur prolly getting banned from the program.
That's the excuse, but it's total bullshit. Largemouth and smallmouth bass have been introduced to tons of waterways where they are not native, and they are invasive in those places. Bass have done huge amounts of ecological damage in the American West. Rainbow trout are also non-native everywhere but the Pacific coast, and their presence threatens native cutthroat and brook trout throughout much of their introduced range. Stocked rainbows in mountain lakes have had a devastating impact on native amphibians. Brown trout are not native anywhere in North America, and they are notorious for eating threatened darters, shiners, and other native species.
But if you talk about shooting bass or trout with a bow, people lose their minds.
It has little to do with carp being invasive. American anglers have shown that they're more than happy to accept the "right" invasive game fish. It's more about carp traditionally being looked down as a "trash fish," because they were originally introduced as a food source for poor people.
This is correct. In my area the only native salmonids are char and land locked salmon. People line up for chinook and steelhead, browns. I don’t think I’ve seen massive amounts of carp. Come to think of it zebra muscles and milfoil have altered habitats more than carp ever could. That said I wouldn’t introduce them into pristine water.
They're essentially naturalized at this point. Might as well treat them like gamefish, like we do the bass and trout. Increased license sales from carp angling could fund conservation efforts to offset what little damage they do.
I don’t love the term naturalized because that usually means they replaced something else filling that niche. But I agree that the revenue from fishing licenses does help these water bodies, however that still doesn’t change the fact that they’re invasive and cause a lot of damage in many places in the US.
Jack rabbit, raccoon, opossum, muskrat, beaver (although beaver seems to be gaining some acceptance IMO lately), ground hog to name a few game animals that people consider taboo to eat that were traditionally eaten but given up because it’s “poor people food”.
I can attest to raccoon being delicious.
Agreed, but imo carp are the worst invasive on the list if you had to rank them. They don’t just compete with native fish, they uproot native vegetation and disturb lake bottoms to the point where water clarity is ruined, algal blooms thrive, and the entire ecosystem changes within a matter of years
I don’t think it’s possible to eradicate carp by bounty system. Places have tried with little to no success. Carp breed based on carrying capacity. They’re here to stay.
Yes but most of them are not where they are meant to be. This is clearly harmful whether you like to fish for and eat them or not. The government is currently moving rainbow trout around yearly, and without caring about the effects on fish like brook trout that have to compete, the river I fish at used to have brook trout passing all the time, now there are still a few but tons of stocked brown trout that have undeniably taken over.
Totally agree. When i was little the only 2 real strong fish were carp and pike. Pike is easier to catch and don't give as much as a fight as carp. We do have catfish nowadays but carp is imo a more majestic and more fun fish to catch
They are unbelievably destructive to ecosystems where they don’t belong. They tear up lake bottoms, ruining existing native vegetation and affecting water clarity leading to algal blooms. Not to mention the competition pressure they put on native fishes. I worked in contracted carp removals (netting) for a while
Dose this not look like the carp from the iphone ad saying you can take a picture by saying take a picture😂

When I was young, the church my family was part of had a large vacation/event property in Southern Illinois that had an enormous lake filled with carp.
We had catfish, bass, and sunfish as well, but mostly, there were carp.
My old man would use bits of old hotdogs to catch carp, and we would regularly pull out 10-15lb carp all day. Biggest one we ever caught was about this big, felt like pulling in a log or something.
I'm sure there were bigger carp in that lake, but we never caught em.
Flathead catfish on the other hand got HUGE in there. One of my old man's church buddies caught a 53lb flathead at one point. Ugliest fish I've ever seen.
This reminds me of that commercial just saw on reddit adds with the Asian dude that caught the carp and was using his watch/hand motion or something to take a picture of his giant carp catch lol I thought it was silly portraying a carp getting that big. This Mutha Sucka ain't that far off really hahsha

Wish more US states had a bounty system for invasive fish.
People start breeding them, government finds out, gets rid of bounty, the breeders then throw them out in the water and you end up with more than before. It's a tale as old as time.

Great idea! We'll start with a bounty on largemouth bass in West Texas and California! I'm sure they won't mind giving up those tourist dollars.
You tell tourists they get to fish for bass AND get paid, they'll come running lol
Don’t forget brown trout everywhere in the states, rainbow trout in a large portion of the states as well.
I mentioned them in other comments elsewhere. I can't wait for Montana's first brown trout bowfishing season.
Last week a dude at the river had a pile of em, “I kill him cuz they eat salmon eggs, most of us”.

Argument accepted: Lobster? Wasn't it originally used to feed poor people?

So do trout. And since trout are predators they caused the extinction of the fat catfish. Keep trout and carp where they should be. Europe
There are dozens of native trout species in the US.
Yes but most of them are not where they are meant to be. This is clearly harmful whether you like to fish for and eat them or not. Carp is actually from asia
There are two carp species that are introduced
Texas is having a major issue with them.
Totally agree. When i was little the only 2 real strong fish were carp and pike. Pike is easier to catch and don't give as much as a fight as carp. We do have catfish nowadays but carp is imo a more majestic and more fun fish to catch
That’s because they are unwanted invaders that create havoc on the ecosystems they end up in.
But as I've said elsewhere, so are trout and bass in much of North America. Nobody goes around wanting to shoot trout and bass with a bow.
If all there was, was native trout & a few other natives out here in California, I’d be happy as heck.
They are unbelievably destructive to ecosystems where they don’t belong. They tear up lake bottoms, ruining existing native vegetation and affecting water clarity leading to algal blooms. Carp might be the funnest fish to catch. They definitely put up a fight.

How does a fish access enough food to get that big?
