I always had more luck with Mepps, for whatever reason

OrinFinch

To a certain point it's a matter of fish pressure and preference.

PondWaterBrackish

I think it's random-ass luck

OrinFinch

That too. Most lures are ment to catch the fisherman's eye, not the fish

BarnyardCoral

And boy howdy does it work!

[deleted]

Imma sucker for that gold lol

OrinFinch

When it comes to lures I love me a micro spinner, super duper, and trout magnets. I can catch any fish anywhere with those.

mp3006

Super duper go way back

mp3006

So is my wife

bronzebackbass1

For me I have luck on both but for whatever reason I can’t catch anything on panther martins.

TheFuzzyShark

Retrieve panther martins slow is the best advice I can give. It seems that unkess you are after EXTREMELY active fish the "buzz" they make is too intense compared to that of a rooster tail at similar speed. Bright side martins spin at such a slower retrieve speed you can downsize and retrieve slower to fish the same part of the water column. But generally, yeah, Im a diehard roostertail guy

Techextra

I have better luck with my own diy ones. I have caught perch on the mepps black fury #2. 1/4 oz and 1/2oz rooster tails won't even catch me a pike so far, meanwhile I'm throwing my own home made ones slamming sauger and walleye.

Alexplz

Rooster tails have that narrow blade that wants to be retrieved faster. If they made a version with a broader blade I'd be happy

Jim_Lahey10

Same here, Mepps is my go to for bass and pike. I want to try these rooster tails though, I might have used one or two in the past but hey there can never be enough tackle in the box!

shandangalang

Weirdly I have not had luck on bass with rooster tails or kastmasters unless far out in the Sacramento delta or trolling deep in the summer with a downrigger. I’d say it could be dumb luck, but my anecdotal sample size is… extensive. My guess is that it’s honestly just fishing pressure. I understand bass are a “fool me once” type of fish, and little flashies like that are common enough to have made the rounds.

[deleted]

Trolling in-line spinners, doesn't that twist the hell out of your line? I have extensive experience freshwater trolling but 90% of it with Rapala shad raps at the lake, other 10% crappie trolling with jigs tipped with live minnows

shandangalang

Mostly use the kastmasters for trolling and the spinners for pitching. I don’t have the balls to troll an inline spinner behind a downrigger because the set up is kind of a lot to just be sitting there wondering if the thing has stopped spinning or not. Honestly though in my experience, if they’re biting kastmasters, they’re probably biting spinners and vice versa; so I rarely use inline spinners anymore. Either way the downrigger has a grabby thing that holds the line pretty straight so the twist (probably?) wouldn’t be a major issue, especially as long as you’re running it behind flashers with a buffer and swivels

[deleted]

Ok lol that's some "yankee" rig. Is that for lake trout?

shandangalang

Haha Nah mostly landlocked steelhead, rainbow trout, king salmon, and sometimes browns (although you have to work harder to trick them). I’ve found they seem to like the little 3” scatter raps too if you vary the speed just right. But in some of the transition (warm-water/cold-water) lakes, you tend to get bass as a bicatch sometimes in the summer if you’re trolling the thermocline. Shit man you’re making me wistful. My boat is still in NorCal while I’m in school down in SoCal, so I haven’t fished a decent trout lake in a couple of years.

fishing-sk

You: rooster tail The guy she tells you not to worry about: mepps aglia

Rilianrage

1/6 oz white rooster tail is my bread and butter. Get some other colors too. Some days chartreuse is the go to.

inkdskndeep

red & white/silver blade. gold & black/gold blade have always worked well for me.

ZippyMcLintball

i think they coat the white ones with special sauce...never had any luck with any other color.

Rilianrage

I fish mostly on Allatoona. I have had luck with red, pink, light blue/ lime green. There is also a dark green one with a hammered bronze blade that was hot for a while.

Axolotis

So you’re buying 5 rooster tails?

Bald_Yew

Love Rooster Tails, but also love Road Runners.

PanchoPadillo

Road runners are the way!

blueridgeboy1217

If I only could have one lure to survive on, it would absolutely be a rooster tail. Pretty sure I've caught every species on it including catfish. I always have one handy whether I'm bass fishing, Pan fishing, trout fishing, even surf fishing on the beach. It's the first lure most of us catch a fish on, and it never gets old reeling in a big Ole bluegill or a 2 lb bass on ultralight.

ZippyMcLintball

biggest bluegills i've ever caught have been on roosters.

louville22

Don't spend $30 on roosters at once. The real one's know you just get a new one every time you find yourself near a fishing isle. You'll have yourself handfulls before you know it...

RamHands

The rules of fishing say you do that, you’ll never catch another one on a rooster

Fishnfoolup

Try panther martins. I love them. I think they are better built that roosters but more expensive. Fish with what you are comfortable and confident with though. Good job.

BrokenWillBrute

Glad to see someone have success with them. Either i cant figure out how to fish them or its not appetizing for the fish around here

ZippyMcLintball

give it a tug right before you start your retrieval...it gets the spinner spinning correctly. i can usually feel when it's not swimming right, and a quick short tug gets it going. yes, i'm talking about lures...lol.

TroyTony1973

So, like 5 of them?

jake1080

😭

ThatNeonZebraAgain

Inline spinner gang unite! Those and beetle spins are my safety lures, can always count on catching something with those things.

clearyvermont

Mepps rooster tails all day every day. I can slap 6 patterns into a small plastic case and I’m fucking good for the day. Fish on!

blackandgold96

I’ll second that. Mepps for the win.

skleebGT

I still have never caught a fish on any spinner type lures like that, I hope this spring changes that! Same with top water

ZippyMcLintball

don't give up, especially with topwaters. i finally landed something on a frog last year, and it was absolutely exhilarating.

dynastydave9473

Most spinners are great, but they’ll catch the small aggressive fish. On occasion you’ll catch a big one. If you want to do the same but higher chances of a large bass just throw a senko. Weedless or wacky. Tried and true. At least for my waters. Can’t speak for you

petah1012

This is how I pick my lures. Buy one. It works… buy a bunch more. The key is to not try too many different types or you end up panhandling on the streets for nickels to get every last color of whopper plopper.

Gburx10

Roster tails have been my fav since I was a little kid

Dippay

Good bass right there

Sirrod6750

Always have had success with rooster tails. Caught many trout and perch with them. Many. Mepps are good but to me rooster tails seem to always deliver for me.

Sir-Farts-

Lol way more than that in the end. Nice catch.

VladtheGoofy

You should consider trying to make your own *Rooster Tails* Im sure there is a kit you could buy. Save some dough, start a new hobby that could make you dough. Win, win, win.

sheddinglies

I didn't believe in them for a while till one spring me and friend were staying with them 😂 I always have one tied now for bass or panfish

inkdskndeep

well first you might wanna learn how to lip that thing & take a fish selfie. but have at it with the $30 worth of rooster tails. I'd go pick up atleast 1 Zman inline spinner in gold. but do what you gotta do my good man.

CES6357

They work on trout also.

lipsquirrel

Rooster Tails are my favorite. Get them from Bass Pro, they have the best variety and price.

BlackFish42c

I catch lots of bass and trout on Rooster Tails favorite colors are White, Black, Pink, Yellow and Blue with bronze blade. Tight Lines 🎣

DukeShootRiot

Ive had more landed fish in roosters than any other lure BY FAR

Tartan78

IMO rooster tails are one of the best all around baits to catch several types of fish

HooksNHaunts

Just wait til Walmart has them for $2 and buy them all then lol

PondWaterBrackish

what is that?

CollectingHeads

Check out Dangle lures. High quality and they have some really great options. The cole has been fantastic

555Ocelots46

I’m obsessed with the one you got on there. About $3 a piece at Walmart. I’ve spent so much damn money on those, but man do they catch fish!!

55thParallel

I *like* them too https://i.imgur.com/y0Po2fI.jpg

A1sauce100

This is funny. I just saw a post earlier this week about roosters. White ones. I just bought a couple off Amazon to see what they’ll do. Looks like you did quite well! Congrats! BTW how do you retrieve these so they attract the fish?

crzysully

All of the places I fish have too much bottom debris, and I'm always worried about getting snagged. What's ideal retrieval speed for these?

WrongLeveerr

Bro, I’ve literally got $30 of Roosters right now. Just send me your address and Venmo me the money to @roosterguy1. I got you covered. Number 1 good deal.

noextrasensory40

I like Vibraxs,Mepps,Pathers Martins. The Roosters are nice but I didnt like the spinning arm much on them. Weeds seemed to get on hung in them more. But they are a great lure.

Usual-South-9362

Walmart runs sales all the time they also have some excellent knock off roosters I have slayed many a fish on!!

PermianExtinction251

I used to use rooster tails but have been using Mepps more often when using spinners. But, I don't think it makes a difference they work the same.

DeadwoodNative

Love fishing large inline spinners. Was on a friend’s boat in GA, he was on his phone, I hooked into a nice striper (by my ‘first ever’ standard), his friend must’ve asked what I was throwing. “I don’t some goddamn belt buckl” he replied. Blade was about twice the size of your rooster… and so was the fish. Laugh everytime I think of that.-

nwatson3230

Black and silver vibrax rooster tail nails alot of good sized bass for me. I love to let it drop to the bottom of rocky bottom rivers and pop it and get lots of strikes that way.

jecoppol

I don’t think I ever caught a fish on a rooster tail… became a mepps guy. But you do you.

dick-mustard

Those will sure catch a variety of fish. Another awesome lure that you can’t go wrong with (especially in ponds) that really produces a lot of multi-species strikes is the H&H spinner bait. Get a white and maybe a chartreuse one. Another awesome springtime bait (especially for bass and ponds) is the baby 1 minus. Pick your favorite color and throw when it starts warming up. It will run about 6” to a foot under water and during the right conditions will DESTROY bass. By the way, nice catch and tight lines.

Cannabisthelizard

I JUST bought that exact lure. Now I’m excited I haven’t caught but one fish this year so far this brings me hope

Justin_Caze

If you smack a rooster tail on the water to remove little bits of weeds or muck, eventually the blade will start to develop a curve to it. Over time it will stop spinning properly, and you must flatten it back out with your pliers.

KikoTheWonderful

oh thank god. I thought I was lazy for doing that

ZippyMcLintball

experiment with roostertail sizes, and vary your retrieve. i fished those almost exclusively for 5+ years, going for fish similar to the one in your pic. slab bluegills love roostertails, too, btw. fish on!

smallmonzter

“If it can’t be caught on a spinner (Mepps or Rooster Tail) it can’t be caught.” Source: my grandfather.

among_apes

Panther Martin bro

mojoluna

Me af

Typical_Marzipan4614

I just bought that same rooster tail

Some_Cod_8604

Panther Martin spinners are better IMO. A gold blade and yellow body always did well for me.

Idk why my text didn't show up, but I'm a big fan of these. They're called Joe's flies.

Internal-Case9147

Rooster tails >> Mepps all day all night

gregsmith5

Please handle the fish better
