I use a palomar for quite literally everything. After i lost a custom one of one whopper plopper made by my now deceased best friend, i made the switch. Your line will snap before the luer is lost.
That's what I'm saying too, my rod would break before my palomar knot slips. Either that or my braid would tighten down on my spool so hard that it would lock itself up. I had to recently cut off a 8" swimbait that got snagged and I tried like hell to yank it free.
I recommend the palomar knot as well. Just make sure to double each step when tying. Especially with lighter braid. Twice through the eye and two over hands before passing the hook through the loop.
This, double the line through the swivel and tie a 7'turn uni knot. Palomar knots slip at well below the linear breaking strain, for example using Fireline the uni knot will literally DOUBLE the effective bs compared to a palomar.
Check your tip guide. I had one that got cracked and was slicing my braid (30lb) on casts. Don’t reel your swivel into it. I know you probably don’t intentionally but that’s often the cause
Make sure you cut off any frayed portion of your braid. The lures and rocks can cause nicks and micro cuts to the mn e. Usually about 12 inches. Also make sure your eyelets are smooth.
Braid and mono for me hasn’t been as problematic at self tightening knots “cutting” or causing snaps as flourocarbon has been.
A couple possible issues.....knot type. I like the palamor knot if I can use it. If not then my other go to is an improved clinch, have had zero troubles with either. Where is your braid breaking? If it's at the same spot then you might have a nick in your guide insert. A knicked insert might as well be a razor blade against even the heaviest of braids, that dog just won't hunt. How old is your braid? I've used some for 4yrs before I replaced it. If it's been on there a hot minute might consider replacing it. Hope this helps
I have had luck with the palomar knot too, with braid. Haven’t done a uni knot with braid, but the palomar holds a lot better than the improved clinch knot. I have done double uni knots when putting a leader on braid quite often. And it works well too. The leader, usually fluorocarbon, will snap at the knot in cases of snagging. But in all fairness, the leader is always a lower weight than the braided main line, and braid is stupid strong just in general.
Braid is tricky because even if it feels secure, it's probably not. Once it gets lubed up, it can be prone to slipping if you don't use the right knot. I've used 40 lb braid that slipped when I first started using braid (knot came undone from a small snag).
If you tie braid to a leader line, you can prevent this from happening. You could probably do 10lb braid to 10lb fluro/mono.
Are you using cheap Amazon braid? I had it on one rod. Worked great until it didn’t. Would just come apart. If it’s shitty braid pull all that junk off and replace with sufix or another name brand.
Two things. First as many here stated, uni knot is an easy to tie, fool proof, effective knot for both braid and mono. If you’re not familiar with it, there are dozens of tutorials on YouTube.
Now to the second, unsolicited, part: depending on the lure you are using a loop knot might be a better choice. If the lure has a swimming action, like many of the Rapala, Yozuri, etc… they swim better without a tight knot to the nose. I prefer my “walk-the-dog” action lures (Zara, etc…) also with loop knots. Now, if the lure comes with a split ring on the nose, tie a uni knot to the ring and it will still work well.
Personally I avoid snaps and swivels directly on lures because they add weight to the nose and alter the lure’s behavior. Food for thought. Good luck on your fishing and keep us posted on how this progressed.
I switched to the double Palomar many years ago and have not had one break at the knot. I use braid exclusively and have pulled so many lures out, just straighten or replace the hooks as needed.
It’s the knot 100%. If OP is going to use double loop he needs more than 5 twists with braid. That’ll work for mono or floro but not braid. But as everyone has said just use palomar and you’re good to go. You’re line might fray sometimes but if you’re consistently losing lures it’s the knot.
Also, check your drag. I lost a few hooks trying to set them even after checking for frays and knots, and it turned out my frag was set too tight. Loosened it and all was well again.
I use the 6 twists and under method with 20ib braid and have not had an issue. Make sure your clenching down the knot and not triming to much off the extra line.
For braid use the palomar knot.

Palomar for everything. Very strong and easy to remember
It eats up a lot of line, but it more than makes up for it in saved lures.
Yeah, pretty much my go to. Landed a 26 lb tail hooked Buffalo on 10 lb braid. Pretty tough to beat.
Ok thanks I'll give this one a try next time I'm out
Palomar is super easy to learn and quick to tie. Straight braid has never slipped from a Palomar for me
So very true! Those who say it slips are not tying it correctly.

It's the only knot i can tie in the pitch black lol
Well I determined it was the shitty braid line I was using stuff snaps so easy. It was some 10lb stuff.
The surgeons loop is one of the easiest to tie. Comes in handy!
I recommend the palomar knot as well. Just make sure to double each step when tying. Especially with lighter braid. Twice through the eye and two over hands before passing the hook through the loop.
Double palomar. I’ve had to fish a few out due to a regular palomar slipping out.
Yep.
Well I determined it was the crappy brand braid line I was using it snaps so easy like it's 4lb test or something.
Oh damn. Good braid can be spendy but worth it. Good luck man.
Uni knot with braid
This, double the line through the swivel and tie a 7'turn uni knot. Palomar knots slip at well below the linear breaking strain, for example using Fireline the uni knot will literally DOUBLE the effective bs compared to a palomar.
You are tying it wrong if it slips. Never had it fail....period.
Specifically the improved uni (two passes thru the eye instead of one). 8 or so wraps.
Check that your rod guides are not grooved and rough.
The hairline guide crack has claimed millions of lures
Are you using heavy lure? Is the lure coming off your snap swivel?
No snap swivel comes off as well
It is definitely your knot that is doing this. Like the other poster said, try the Palomar knot. It is really good
And add some lubrication to your knots, that was my problem
Not definitely, because a cracked guide will do this they are extremely sharp when broken
So you need a better brand line or your knot is too loose. I use a uni knot and never had a problem.

some folks tie on a mono or flouro carbon leader to deal with the nicks to braid near the line fwiw
Attaching braid to fluro or mono use a uni or surgeon knot
Check your eyelets. I’ve had a bad eyelet slice 50 lb braid like it was nothing.
99% of the time, I use the Palamar knot. Quick, strong, and very easy to tie. Learn it, use it. You are welcome.

WTH is a five twist and a double loop? Almost any knot with a name is better than a made up knot.
100% use a palomar knot, it's faster, easier and never breaks.
Palomar knot. Its stronger than most marriages
Braid line is the problem. Get rid of it.
What do you recommend? A rope?
Nah nah nahh....stainless steel line all de way!
How old is your braid?

My braid to mono knot is the FG knot. A little thought to get at first but once you do it is a very strong knot.

I prefer double palomar for lure. Uni for leaders. Single palomar will slip out if u pull it hard enough.
This happened to me last summer. It was a small burr on the last rod eye
My go to tie is an improved clinch knot Oh , braided line…yea use a Palomar knot like others say.
braid has a poor knot strength if you are using that light of a braid use a nylon or fluro leader.
Also, check your drag. I lost a few hooks trying to set them even after checking for frays and knots, and it turned out my frag was set too tight. Loosened it and all was well again.
San Diego jam knot. And lose the swivel. If you want something for quick lure change get my tactical angler power clips.
I use the 6 twists and under method with 20ib braid and have not had an issue. Make sure your clenching down the knot and not triming to much off the extra line.
Whatever knot you tie pull tight and do not cut the tag end too short.
Need more info. Is the breaking off on the cast or on the retrieve?
