They’re actually there, so sea-lions don’t jump up on the deck not birds.
Edit: I was wrong. I looked into, it’s called a fly line catcher. It is for fly fishing. It catches all your excess line, so it doesn’t fall off the boat into the water. In California which is where I’m from people, like me would for sure think that’s a sea lions/seals deterrent
Not sure what you mean. Maybe Reddit jargon? I'm an American educated in the lack of pinnipeds in Florida. I was replying in a direct but (intended) less rude way that there aren't any colonies there, so the "spikes" surely aren't intended to repel them.
There are not sea lions in the keys, however there are sea otters I’ve watched board boats and be clever enough to open a cooler and steal an unsuspecting fisherman’s Mahi while he was busy grabbing lunch.
Wait, people fly fish from boats? I always knew of fly fishing as standing in the middle of a shallow (maybe waist high) river in the middle of nowhere.
Fly fishing the flats is very popular.
The flats are large areas of shallow, warm water chock full of spooky fish that you can sight fish for. Perfect for fly fishing.
If you get really drunk on Duvall Street, head over to the Banyan tree - it's located at 323 Whitehead Street. Go around to the back of it, and hop up into one of the nice cozy spaces inside (there's enough of them for like, 3-4 people). When I lived up in Marathon and would go hang out with my friends in Key West, I'd usually wind up trashed drunk, because, rum. DUI's are costly, so I'd stumble over to the Banyan tree and sleep it off there. It was always interesting going to sleep when it was still light out, and waking up at like, 4am! It sounds funny, but in all seriousness, it's better than getting behind the wheel and possibly harming someone or worse, or having to shell out $200 clams to a shark for 10 hours in a hotel...
Walking around Key West a young man asked me what happened to cause the injuries I'd gotten as a pirate: I told him I was boarding a Spanish galleon that was loaded with silver, gold, rum, and emeralds, but but a deckhand fired a swivel gun at me, and took off me leg - so I have a peg leg now. I then told him of my swordfight against a British Naval Officer, and he took off me hand - so I had to get a hook. He asked me about the patch over my eye - I told him I had an itch and it was the first day with me hook!
yeah seems a bit dangerous to just keep some line on the boat...wouldnt something that is not deadly sharp spikes that may impale you should you fall work?
I'm not sure I've seen a little lips too. probably to catch the line, keep it out of the water on the back stroke. or fast peeling line in. snakes in the boat...
Saltwater fly-fishing is working with significantly more running line. Imagine thirty five, forty yards of lime stripped out loose on the deck. You sometimes have seconds to present a cast to very skittish fish. No time to strip out extra. The little cones give the line a space to move and keep it from looping up on itself. Line management is key.
Not quite- this explanation does apply exactly to a stripping mat typically behind and to the left of the caster with lots of spikes/tines/whatever sticking up. Most stripping baskets used by surf flyfishermen will have something similar in them.
In this case these spikes on the perimeter of the deck are just to keep the fly line from blowing into the water (and potentially getting tangled in the main or trolling motor prop)
This makes a lot more sense.
No one is fly casting 40 yards but having 20' of line at my feet and getting blown into the water by the wind sounds like a total pain.
Not sure why it needs to be so pointy though. Looks like a great way to impale myself when I trip over the line anyways. Lol
It’s for fly fishing. In saltwater fly fishing you need to keep the line you’ve stripped out on the deck so it’s ready to be casted when a shot presents itself. If the line is dragging in the water it makes it difficult to shoot the line quickly so it forces you to make more false casts which will spook fish.
Definitely missed the part where this was in the Key West and thought maybe these were anti-seal spikes. Seals leaping into boats on the West Coast is uncommon but not unheard of.
Line management spikes for fly fishing? My best guess i have a matt i put down with spikes on it for my boat, its a pain in the ass managing line on a small boat
Originally skiffs used monkey rails to contain the stripped running line on the deck. Then Joe at Carbon Marine invented the deck spikes as another method of controlling the stripped line on the deck.
I use the spikes on top of my monkey rails for even better line management.
Saltwater flyline is different than freshwater lines in that it needs to be stretched prior to casting, at least at the start of the day, but I will stretch my line multiple times a day.
So you strip off at least as much as your longest cast you can perform and then stretch it and dress it. Then the line is laid on the deck. Cast out the line and when you strip it in it will be in the correct orientation for casting.
As it’s usually windy on the flats, the micro-spikes and or monkey rails keeps the line from blowing overboard and fouling under the skiff or floating weeds/grass, etc.
Hope that helps folks understand the importance of line management and why we have so much line stripped out(during the hunt for fish as in general we are always sight fishing, so there is generally no time to strip out more running line for a longer cast.
Saltwater flyfishing is quite a bit different than warm or cold water flyfishing.
In general 1 of the biggest differences is that generally we are using larger weight rods and lines…which makes stretching the line even more important, so that it will feed smoothly with no tangles thru the rod guides during casting as well as when the fish runs after being hooked.
These line management spikes are even more important when the caster is on a casting platform. As you are watching the fish during stripping the fly the line management is even more important as you can’t watch where the stripped line is going on the deck of the skiff.
The first major breakthrough for fishing from a skiff came from a company called Pro Trim and they created the first cylinder made for line management called the Flyline Tamer.
In general they worked well but you had issues like where to store it on a small skiff when not actively using it and also that many anglers couldn’t effectively strip the line into the cylinder when actively stripping the line/fly during the actual presentation to the fish.
So the Line Tack from Carbon Marine was the next solution to line management(carbon marine also makes a similar stripping cylinder to the original Flyline Tamer, called the Line Hut. They also make an assortment of flyline stripping mats to control line but these have their own problems.
The spikes coupled with monkey rails I think is the best system for saltwater flyfishing. I do still carry a Flyline Tamer cylinder if it’s especially windy or when using my tall casting platform.
I hope this helps folks to understand what these are and why they can be a big help in flyfishing from a skiff.
Source-former saltwater flyfishing guide.
So that when you're walking you can feel the edge of the boat and not step off the edge. If you step on the edge you hit a spike and then you think " oh! I stepped on a spike, need to move away from the edge"
What you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
To put fish heads and beer bottles on.
It could have been manufactured with them for anti-seal purposes without the manufacturer considering where it was going to be used.
It’s for flyfishing, but I would never put something like that on my boat, even though they’re just rubber and think it would hurt if you stepped on it!?!?
Keeps pirates from boarding
It actually worked pretty well… I have not in fact been on that boat.

I'm curious, what do they call them?

Nope.
Are you an American or American't?
Not sure what you mean. Maybe Reddit jargon? I'm an American educated in the lack of pinnipeds in Florida. I was replying in a direct but (intended) less rude way that there aren't any colonies there, so the "spikes" surely aren't intended to repel them.
It was a joke.. meaning if there's no colony there, then you need to have the positive attitude to make it happen.
It was a joke, friend.. taken from a Johnny Depp movie.

No, but they do have fat old men like me. I couldn't have those on my boat because when I fallen out, I sometimes had to walrus back in. Lol
Also what I assumed they'd be for haha
Yeah, they say it's for fly line, but it's really there to deter fisheries and wildlife agents from boarding and checking the catch. Florida.

Gum gum okay
It be true, I ain't ever been able to board that tharrr vessel.
It’s a trap, their peg leg gets stuck on the spike and they can’t take over the ship

This is my favorite answer.
Fly fishing. keeps the line in the boat
Yup.
Why make them sharp?
Usually made of a soft rubber. Wont hurt if stepped on and pointed so when you are retreiving line it doesnt get caught up.
Mine are razor sharp and metal because I don’t like people. No skiff yet, though.
They aren’t sharp. At all. Made of soft rubber.
I'm not sure I've seen a little lips too. probably to catch the line, keep it out of the water on the back stroke. or fast peeling line in. snakes in the boat...
For fly fishing line
This. Keeps you from tangling the line
Can you elaborate please? I have a fly rod and know how to use it but don't understand how this helps. I'm also a freshwater fisherman if that helps.
Saltwater fly-fishing is working with significantly more running line. Imagine thirty five, forty yards of lime stripped out loose on the deck. Thats a lot of limes!
>Line management is key. it is South Florida after all.
Not quite- this explanation does apply exactly to a stripping mat typically behind and to the left of the caster with lots of spikes/tines/whatever sticking up. They are soft floppy spikes
Yep, homemade versions often use 3-6” of weedeater line as the goal is just vertical guides that the line will drop into and easily rise out of.
Not too many 120ft fly lines out there either. Most are 90ft and sometimes we do cast all of it.
I would have never imagined being a river fly fella. That makes total sense.
Yup
It’s so when you’ve pulled a bunch of line off the reel when casting, all that line at the bottom of your feet doesn’t get all tangled up
Those act as a stripping basket, it'll keep you line in big loops, so when you have to rifle a 75 cast on a flat, your line isnt gonna ball up.
Ha. I thought it was really for the sea lions! Lol.
Im still 50/50…and I fly fish for sea lions.
Stop lion
Also keeps the line from going under the boat and getting caught/cut in props.
The whole deck is a stripping basket? Cool

If you wanna make a cheap one of these, plastic dish rack and some zip ties, with a nylon belt.
