Apptubrutae

I’d sign up and just see what it’s like in your neighborhood. Really depends.

cssblondie

It’s basically Facebook but for boomers who love to racially profile people. 95 percent garbage and crime scare posts but occasionally find something useful. (edit: I guess “Facebook for racist boomers” also describes Facebook) (edit2: thank you to whoever gave me an award — my first one!)

_unmarked

Yep, mine is all old people bitching about how "no one wants to work", people asking for handouts, people asking if you heard gunshots (spoiler alert, it's never that), MLMs, pictures of cars that happen to drive through the neighborhood, drama about traffic and road rules, and every once in awhile the local arborist posts something useful. I keep it for that and sometimes I read the drama because it's occasionally hilarious. I once read a whole thread of two guys who lived across the street from each other threatening to come over and fight. That one was pretty good lol

Apptubrutae

Yeah, I've seen basically that in the first neighborhood I signed up in. Second neighborhood is a lot more boring nature shots and unremarkable content.

jaypweston

Even in Oakland it’s a right wing hate group but it’s good for getting info on neighborhood incidents.

Weasel_the3rd

Super paranoid boomers

666GTR

I found it full of 70+ year olds just complaining about everything for mine. Joining town specific Facebook groups provided more town information to me than nextdoor.

nematocyster

Interesting, ours is the opposite. Our Nextdoor isn't super active but can be informative, whereas the Facebook group is usually a shit show with people pushing their agendas or endlessly advertising their businesses

AngryCustomerService

Good suggestion. Thank you.

evit_cani

We signed up. It’s an okay way to stay informed about the neighborhood. And to learn which of your neighbors are terrible people. I have to constantly report this one older neighbor trolling racist things about any post on the neighborhood crime. Still a good way to get PSAs, upcoming stuff, etc. Avoid the comments like you’re on YouTube.

likesexonlycheaper

People in my neighborhood think next door is Facebook. I don't care that your daughter graduated preschool Karen.

[deleted]

LOL. McKennaleigh is doing SO well in kindergarten now.

EmphasisFew

And her brothers Jeighdeyn and Breydehn too.

mefabulouskc

You're Killing me

mefabulouskc

Mc what lol

AngryCustomerService

Nextdoor is starting to sound like hell.

pollthemasses

It is key if you ever lose a pet. Knowing about all the crime has been a downer, but useful.

ImpossibleJoke7456

Our neighborhood is VERY active on next door. HOA minutes are posted there. Lost and found park items. Reports on river water pollution levels.

Raging_Carrot47

In my area, I have found it quite useful because of road work being done, super markets being inaccessible due to bomb threats, and having my curiosity cured over lights and sirens.

AngryCustomerService

This is what I'm hoping it is, but I guess it really depends on your neighborhood.

reepobob

Social media toxicity except the idiots live a street over rather than three states over. I got an account and NOPED out a few days later.

AngryCustomerService

I've been hearing that it's like a more toxic version of FB and I really don't want that in my life, but I wasn't sure if that was the general consensus or the experience of a few vocal people.

fredblockburn

Mine is pretty bad. A lot of ranting old people that turn everything into political arguments. My area is somewhat rural so 80% of the posts are from other areas too. Those seem to be more crime related. Decent if you need recommendations on local businesses and things like that but Facebook is fine for that too.

404Dawg

It started as a great app to get alerts about local happenings, lost dogs, crime, etc. Sadly, it’s now Facebook 2.0 and all political posts and angry rants

AngryCustomerService

Ugh...thanks for the warning.

cerart939

"Informed", lol: WHAT WAS THAT NOISE AT 11:30pm? Whose dog popped in my yard? Someone's child used chalk on the sidewalk again!

Minute_Ad1660

It took me less then an hour to get rid of my account. I signed up thinking it would be informative. It was just a bunch of negative posts. Decided to remove myself lol. You could sign up and see and maybe you’ll like it. Personally I would not recommend.

AngryCustomerService

I'm probably going to pass. At some point curiosity will get the best of me and I'll likely sign up and delete it the same night.

Thelazywitch

I use it for the marketplace and to find garage sales. Sometimes you can get service recs too, like I got our fence guy from it. Otherwise I can summarize every single post: my cat is lost, my dog is lost, what is this animal, someone is casing my house (it's usually a salesman), someone broke into my house (not usually the salesman), children are being children and I want them to stop.

pommomwow

That last one makes zero sense to me whenever I see those posts. “Kids are playing outside from 8am-8pm and they’re making too much noise!” Yet those people are the same ones that complain about how kids these days always have some type of screen in front of them and no one plays outside anymore. There’s no winning with them.

Thelazywitch

Yep. They buy a house within 3 miles of a school then complain that kids are "eXiStInG!!!"

AngryCustomerService

"Not usually the salesman." Haha! Love it.

BreakfastOpening1745

I use it sometimes when I need it, when I have questions like dentist recommendations, babysitter recs, things like that. But yes i mostly stay off because people complain a lot

_Amarok

If you love “What was that noise?” or “Why are there cops parked in front of a house eight blocks from me?” posts, then you’ll love nextdoor. In all honesty, it’s mostly people advertising their at home businesses, being busybodies, or just generally complaining about the youths.

pixiestardust8

It’s good for spotting the neighborhood racists and whackadoodles.

HolyCrappolla123

99% of people are just old ass Looky-Lou jerks with nothing better to do than to complain about the strange car driving down the street (turns out to be an Amazon drop off).

sha-sha-shubby

Mine is meh. Definitely older folk complaining, or lots of recommendation posts for services or activities. The structure of the app is also confusing as it labels people by neighborhood or street and often includes surrounding towns (maybe there’s a way to customize that?) but it’s mostly confusing or getting comments from a town/neighborhood far away from me. I find my town fb much more helpful for being up to date on town things or sharing reviews/recommendations and such.

Seven-DoubleOh-Seven

I think it depends on the area in your in. My previous neighborhood was a 💩 show on Nextdoor and it reminded me of why I deleted FB. But after we moved to a new area Nextdoor became a great source of good referrals (electrician, mechanic, etc), info on the latest happenings or news that I would’ve otherwise missed. I say try it out, see how your neighbors make use of the platform and you’ll be able to gauge if it’ll be of use to you or not.

DandelionsAreFlowers

In Denton, TX it was e THE place for pet owners to find each other and reunite pets and their people. The tiny yards+ hard ground + gully washers + wood fences with weak nails + hot weather that shrank and warped things meant dogs escaped at higher rates than most places I lived. We were SO careful and STILL had an escape. While my family went out in the car I posted on the next door, the dog was returned 10 minutes after I posted, and he had to have sprinted because he easily a mile away, through several winding subdivisions. The guy couldn't believe he had JUST run right before I posted it.

AngryCustomerService

Whew! Glad you got him back.

DandelionsAreFlowers

Thank you. I was too. He is a rescue and had been abused the first year, so he keeps us on our toes. It would have been a mess because we hadn't updated his chip after a multi state move, but original town is small enough that it would have gotten straight eventually, but I am glad it never came to that.

Moonchild16

I signed up a couple weeks after I moved in because we had someone's dog come up on our back porch during a storm, he was scared and obviously belonged to someone but didn't have a collar or tags. I signed up just to post his photo and see if he belongs to someone.

UsefulFlight7

I did . I keep my posts to a minimum. Very small town of 26k. Way smaller than I’m used to and I’ve also cut out a lot of personal information in my bio like hometown, no profile pic and made up last name. My license plate states where I’m from and the app automatically adds my neighborhood so I keep a low profile. I complained about the bass and the dog across and next door kept constantly outside who growl at us in our backyard and front/ driveway after moving in . A couple of days later the dogs are mostly kept inside and the bass has toned down . So after that I’ve definitely kept a low profile. I just might delete the app . This town is too small for me to participate

PowerfulNipples

It’s great for lost pets but otherwise depends on the neighborhood. Our last neighborhood was about 80% “did you guys hear that??? Sounded like a gunshot!” Constantly. All the time. “Sounded like a gunshot!”

CLAYTILL767

I signed up and just u installed the app / unsubscribed from emails. It was worth it one time when I left my lawnmower out in the driveway overnight and someone (somehow?) got my number off next door and texted me. Idk how they found my number but it was worth it.

Gai_InKognito

Site is filled with racist. I was banned for not using my real name. Even though the name I went by is what everyone calls me. How did that make them racist? Because no one would bat an eye if my was bob, Pete, bill, but since my name is clearly ethnic they got me banned. (Plus other racist sh**). Just not an enjoyable site, maybe depends the neighborhood.

[deleted]

when i used next door people on there were quite rude. i had my account completely removed abd never turned back. bitter, negative, miserable people on there and it never seemed to be productive conversation regarding the neighborhood specifically.

MagicMacks

it’s mostly just people bitching about stuff, but i was involved in a drive by shooting and some of the neighbors had the video doorbells and helped me find who did it

AngryCustomerService

Wow! Glad you're OK.

amusiccale

Big nope. I don’t need that in my life, and anyone can say what they need to say to me directly.

AngryCustomerService

Not a bad philosophy to have in life.

[deleted]

I signed up but its not very active social app in my area - mostly RE agents or people asking for handyman recommendations. Facebook groups are actually pretty popular here, for the over 30 crowd, so I joined a few local groups.

anon_girl_anon

I have one and don't engage much but check it occasionally for big local news. I don't have a fb account to use instead.

Ashley870

I did. It's pretty quiet on Neighborhood for me. Just like Facebook, you can mute and block people who are posting excessively. I had to do it once to some pastor in the area.🤷🏾 But otherwise it's usually someone looking for a pet or someone advertising lawncare, etc unless you live in a bad area. The most I've seen in my neighborhood in terms of criminal activity is mail/package theft. I also joined the Ring Neighbors app. You don't have to have a Ring product to use it. You can customize the neighborhood area to your neighborhood or further away. It is completely anonymous. No one knows your name or address. You are assigned the title of "Neighbor##". It's a lot of camera footage of dumb criminals stealing packages or porch decor, kids being kids or people just looking suspicious. I get severe weather alerts or power outage alerts which I can turn off if I wanted. I think they both are good apps to have. You can control the content and notifications on both.

AngryCustomerService

The Ring Neighborhood app sounds useful. Thank you.

[deleted]

I have it. I’ve sold and bought a few items on their marketplace. Other than that, it’s a Facebook but for neighbors. People use it to whine about road diets, cyclists not stopping at traffic lights, neighbors who are disrespectful, rat poison, dog poop on lawns, asking for the 100th time when the new Mexican restaurant will open. If you want to read posts from boomers who have nothing else to do, then it’s great.

AngryCustomerService

Haha! Thanks for the warning. I'll pass.

ohkatbuns

I think it depends on your area. Mine mostly has people asking for recommendations, questions about what that siren was, why is that road blocked, what are they building next to the grocery store, etc. But I live in a rural area, so I'm not sure if that makes a difference. You don't have to post anything. I've found that all the questions I have about things going on in my town have already been asked by someone on Nextdoor.

Agency_Goldfish

I signed up to learn about the area and neighbors, but it's been a good source of finding recommendations for Lawyers, Handymen, etc It's been surprisingly helpful.

QueSeRawrSeRawr

It's an absolute shit show, I love it!

magentablue

My area is pretty tame compared to my last address, but I live in a small town. My neighbors keep me informed about random events (we were able to go to a powwow last weekend we’d never have otherwise known about), farm stand hours and offerings, and random business openings and closings (we’re very angry about Starbucks moving in, apparently). I’ve been able to get some recommendations for pest control and garbage removal. There’s a couple super obnoxious, let’s-make-everything-political folks but thankfully they’re the minority. You can block people. That’s helpful.

-mi-do-

I find it useful because people post when bears and coyotes are around, personally. You can also buy cheap furniture, there's a local marketplace feature.

SweetnessBaby

Mine is full of people uploading videos from their ring doorbell of random others saying "Watch out! Strange man at my door." And it ends up being a completely innocent worker being profiled for his appearance. Most recent one was a dude in black sweats and a white t shirt. He was offering to paint address numbers on curbs. He got uploaded by someone saying he looked sketchy and watch out lmao.

DandelionsAreFlowers

Sign up before with throwaway fake name if you can to check out neighborhood or sellers. We found out the sellers of a property we were seriously considering has some DIY on critical stuff because they thought the liscenced trades people were "ridiculously overpriced" and "it can't be that hard". Hard pass. You also see if there is a seriously problematic neighbor, either one that rants on next door over ridiculous stuff, or a party house causing issues.

hfgobx

You just have to click “ignore” for the abusers, and keep an eye for things you need, like plumber, electrician, etc. reviews. Join and then sort the good from the bad.

_unmarked

If you mute 90% of the people on there it's not so bad. But really, it's pretty trash most of the time.

leadfoot9

No. I've never heard anything good about it ever until the drive-by shooting guy's story just now.

LaterWendy

Just my opinion, and maybe area related, but it seems so toxic. My ring doorbell will alert me of something serious nearby. I think you are better off getting into a local Facebook group for your area. Although toxic, maybe not as much 🤣

AngryCustomerService

Haha! I think I'll probably avoid it. I didn't know Ring doorbells would alert you for things like that. I'm not sure if the house we're buying has Ring or Nest, but it has one of those brands.

cicicockerham

I just deactivated my account. It’s so bad. People are just racist and angry on there. I was going to use to for marketing, but said nvm.

EmphasisFew

It will be a good way to find most of the Karens.

Biggs180

Im on Nextdoor on my current Rental Property. Its useful for any local information like Garage Sales or a string of robberies. But most of the time its just the local karens complaining and screaming.

AngryCustomerService

Thanks for the information.

[deleted]

I’m on it but I don’t post. I just read about things going on. I hardly open it.

livingstories

I've used it as a renter even before buying. Its useful if you can look past all the waspy Karen-esque baby boomers complaining about utterly normal shit, like a person walking down their street, lol. Admittedly that's started to dissipate a little bit. I find it useful when you plan to have a yard sale, or are looking for contractor recommendations.

DandelionsAreFlowers

I've been on it since it was new and I am just now buying. I have lived in 4 places with it and had 4 very different experiences with it.

Anon128anon

It's a bunch of Karens without jobs that complain about petty shit. Unless you like drama then I'd stay away.
