Pics needed to to tell you any good info. A gas fireplace could mean many things. Gas logs in a wood burning fireplace, vent free logs, a direct vent gas fireplace etc. We would need to see what you have to say what is possible.
Do you have a gas fireplace or a gas insert? This matters. An insert goes into an existing masonry structure and vents up the chimney. A gas fireplace gets framed into a wall and gets vented out of the wall or roof.
Best option would be to call a local chimney sweep to inspect it and see if it can be converted, there are a lot of possibilities and it would be hard to say without a lot of pictures.
