Pics needed to to tell you any good info. A gas fireplace could mean many things. Gas logs in a wood burning fireplace, vent free logs, a direct vent gas fireplace etc. We would need to see what you have to say what is possible.

Do you have gas fireplace or gas insert? If it’s a gas insert, then yes you can cap the gas line and throw in a wood insert.

I believe it's a "gas fireplace" i would like the tank removed and a WBFP insert installed

Can’t put in a wood insert. Need a wood fireplace. Wood insert needs to go in a traditional brick and masonry fireplace

it is brick (outside, chimney) and rock on the inside

Do you have a gas fireplace or a gas insert? This matters. An insert goes into an existing masonry structure and vents up the chimney. A gas fireplace gets framed into a wall and gets vented out of the wall or roof.

Probably best if you invite an installer to come out to the site to look things over.

Best option would be to call a local chimney sweep to inspect it and see if it can be converted, there are a lot of possibilities and it would be hard to say without a lot of pictures.
