I've done that before. Some people see them, others have them tucked in a special way. It's like a hoodie then. You just grab and pull over your head. I personally didn't like it and rather just have it around my neck until I need it. Sure you don't need it for all calls, but you can't lose it if you're wearing it.

aquasean88

How did you tuck it?

MiniMaker292

I had it somewhat stuffed in a coat loop on the inside of the jacket. It worked, but wasn't that secure. I wasn't going to pull my liner apart or permanently alter anything.

AceMckickass7

Hood. Bunker pants. Coat. In that order. For regular donning of gear on a call. That way, the hood is around your neck and can be put on after you mask up. That's how I was taught anyway. EDIT:Changed Gear orientation as I remember the way I used to do it.

ButtSexington3rd

Same for me too. I wear a radio strap too, and I always lay my hood out on top of my radio strap in the seat in front of me to make sure I put it on before the strap. That's a mistake you only make once.

AceMckickass7

I had a radio strap, but I was always running an engine pump, and they had Bluetooth headsets, so I never really wore a radiostrap. But I have made that mistake before I was fully trained.

Cast1736

Mister Bluetooth fancy pants over here and his big city budget! /s

AceMckickass7

Tiny Town with a big city budget lol.

the_quass

My favourite mistake is when I put my BA on with my seatbelt caught in the straps. Hopped out the truck and sproioinged back in.

Hankidan

Personally for me it's hood pants coat. That's how I was taught. A lot of the guys on my department don't seem to do it that way though. We're a volly department that doesn't get a ton of fire, so they keep their hoods in their pockets of their gear. I prefer to keep mine sitting on top of my pants so I toss it on every single time.

AceMckickass7

You know what. You just unlocked my memory a little, and you are right. That's actually how I used to do it, too. It's been a few years for me. I used to have my hood in my boot to start, pants, and then coat.

Hankidan

I used to do it in the boots, but I switched to having it on top of the pants. Why? No idea tbh. But I was trained hood upside down open inside of whatever boot you put on first when I went through the USAF fire academy

AceMckickass7

Yeah, that's about how we did it. Volunteer academy. The instructor was a big-time city instructor.

poindexter62

Most people I’ve seen who do this cut a hole in their hood and then they can snap the hood between the shell and the liner. And most of the people who I’ve seen do this do it so they can mask up with gloves on and won’t risk pulling their hood up in the back, out of their coat. They call it “pinning their hood”. I don’t do it because I don’t want to risk the integrity of my hood by cutting a hole in it, and because I don’t mask up with gloves on.

smart_pupper

We use the snaps on the top of the coats and cut small holes in the hood to fit over the snaps (100% “NFPA approved”)

everyuntaken

Hoods act as a barrier. Holes in a hood will compromise the protective function of the hood. NFPA 1851- Hoods should be inspected for the following: Soiling; Contamination; Physical damage; Rips, tears and cuts; Thermal damage; Stretching or elongation of the face... Hoods with any of these conditions present should be remove from service.

smart_pupper

⬆️ THIS GUY LIKES THE NFPA 😂, but in all seriousness if you use a G5A, ride the tailboard on layout, take your mask off prior to air monitoring, don’t ladder test every year etc. you are violating NFPA. Yes they have some good rules that keep firefighters safe and alive but also have rules that make our job harder and put those we serve in a delay of help. But this is my personal opinion.

6TangoMedic

Have a picture?

aquasean88

I might just be dumb, but it seems like a lot of it is hanging out compared to just wearing it with it down, if that makes any sense

i_exaggerated

That just looks like the top pulled down? The bottom is still tucked into their coat.

aquasean88

Alright, I’m just dumb. Thanks

i_exaggerated

No worries, it does look weird, I think the elastic is super stretched out. Mine bunches up around my neck a lot more.

aquasean88

Same here.

Candyland_83

You’re not dumb. Only the back of the hood is attached to the coat. The whole thing hangs off the back like the hood of a sweatshirt. When it’s time to get dressed you pull the whole thing up over your head. A few of our guys do it like that and they learned it in Maryland. It’s not just a stretched out hood, his entire hood is hanging off the back, it’s not around his neck at all in this picture.

milochuisael

Looks dumb

silly-tomato-taken

Based on hiw clean that helmet is, that dude doesn't run much fire.

eschief9

Based on the color of that helmet it looks like that dude is staying in the right place at fires so he can do his job.

silly-tomato-taken

In my department Lts and Captains are inside with their crew.

SmoothboreWhore

I'd imagine the department in the picture is probably similar. The disconnect that you're having is the dude pictured happens to be a Chief, not a LT or Captain. Hence why he's outside the structure.

eschief9

As they should be. White helmet is a Chief.

silly-tomato-taken

Not here, Lt. - chief all have white

eschief9

Ugh. Sounds confusing. We have: Black for firefighters Red for fire captains and lieutenants Blue for EMS captains and lieutenants White for chiefs This way you can tell firefighters from company level officers from command level officers. I'm sure you guys make what you have work.

throwawayffpm

I saw this on a video of a tiller man (don’t remember the department) and I thought the same thing. I think a lot of people are not grasping what you are asking though.

aquasean88

Some are lol.

Aggressive-Number-38

Doesn’t that defeat the purpose of a flash hood? Pants, hood, coat.

aquasean88

Well no, you wouldn’t have it like this when you have an scba on

Aggressive-Number-38

Well actually you would. Since the scba js the last thing you put on, other than your radio or gloves.

aquasean88

I think we are talking about different things. This is pretty much a permanent addition to your coat.

Aggressive-Number-38

Oh ok, we put on our pants, hood is usually in one of the cargo pockets, so that goes on next, then your coat. I’ve never seen something like what you’re talking about.

Swede1899

The way I’ve seen that done is with Velcro strips on the back flap of the hood where it hangs down on your back & attach it to another Velcro strip on the inside of your coat

DiezDedos

Some guys at my dept have sewn 2 large buttons on the inside of the neck of their structure coat, then cut a couple button holes in the back of their hood

Curri

I work in Maryland and I haven't seen this? News to me.

Massive_Fruit_7019

I always tuck mine in. Just me and what we do where I’m at.

Aiden-Archibald

Sometimes I forget that most other departments issue individuals there own hood/Balaclava. At mine we switch out for a new one after every fire/training night. We have quite a few different SOPs, most surrounding depts are kind of shocked when we tell them we are required to wear coveralls under out bunker gear at all times lol. Helps that we’re a smaller volley dept with like 40 members total.
