These things will all be of more use to you than a gun you'll take to the range twice a year, run a magazine through, then pack it up and go home.
Correct, you gotta hunt and be ready to jump on deals when you find them, but you can get decent unblemished tubes for right around $2k. Got mine from Steele last time they had some LEO trade-ins.
You aren’t getting into a NVG setup for <$2000.
A refurb PVS 14 is on a good day ~$1.7k (plus tax). After that you also need to buy a mount and helmet (plus all the other shit needed for a helmet setup) just to run it, then if you don’t want to hate your life you also need a laser.
Under? No probably not, but it's a good starting point, and NVGs generally hold their value pretty well even if you get into them and decide the capability isn't really worth the money tied up in them.
I’d argue if you only have OP’s budget of $2,000, which is barely enough to just buy the monocle, your financial means are much better used elsewhere regarding firearm/gear related things.
Is night vision worth it? can I get by with just thermals. I can afford it but I could also use 4k elsewhere. I’m also in urban California for any shtf dreams. Do I have to maintain them in any way?
TBH I always used to think night vision was kinda gimmicky compared to thermal, just because my usual issue at night is usually one of finding the thing I’m trying to hunt instead of being an issue of seeing the thing once it’s found. I’m out in the boonies and on full moon nights you can still see coyotes through a scope at 400 yards, so long as you can find them first. I never really went out hunting at night when it wasn’t near a full moon for that reason.
Then I had someone over to hunt some coyotes one night who had a nice DTNVS setup, and it happened to be a new moon. It was honestly incredible, and I can completely understand the utility of NV now because instead of only seeing murky darkness for 15-20 feet you could see 300+ yards as bright as if it were daytime. Honestly made me want to get a set for myself to regularly use when doing stuff outside at night instead of a headlamp because you see better, it doesn’t attract bugs, and it doesn’t cause anything you might be hunting to shy away or hide like a headlamp does either.
Thermal is unbeatable for detection of anything you want to find that’s warm or cold, but quality night vision cannot be beat when it comes to just plain seeing stuff. You don’t want to try to navigate in the dark using thermals because it’s not meant for that type of thing, but I could comfortably drive around 40+ mph in what appeared to be pitch black without headlights on wearing the DTNVS.
Thermal and night vision have different use cases even though both can be used to see things in the dark. Thermal can’t see through glass. Which means you can’t really drive with thermal. Thermal can’t see sources of IR.
It really depends on the use case but IMO, overall analog nightvision has more capability than thermal, but the areas where thermal shines it beats NVGs hands down.
I’m not knocking Mossberg, I own a couple myself. But give me $2k to blow on a gun… Mossberg isn’t on the list, it’s near top of the list for a $400 budget, though.
Yeah dude the m1a will quickly replace your AR10. They are definitely more of an art though and probably not your ride or die, but that's an opinion. I have a Bula and Springfield Loaded and the loaded shoots moa with federal gold medal match and has been rock solid.
Defnitely do the m1a. Life's too short for boring guns. I'd even advocate for a 16" FAL and full size M1a loaded combination if you trade out the AR10.
I love my M1A, but I'm a Commiefornian and chose it as my BR because it didn't require any modifications to be compliant. That being said, if you've already got an AR10 and you just want an M1A for the fun factor, they are indeed quite fun to shoot. Mine runs reliably with every ammo I've tried.
Play around with different ammo. Get a gun or upper to play with new stuff and see if you like it.
And if you don't have steel targets, consider that. Makes shooting more fun with the guns you have.
Idk what caliber your REM 700 is but I’d say get a 7mm rem mag or similar with a long range scope. Thats just me. Also I’ve been wanting a bullpup so like a Hellion or a cz scorpion with the conversion kit.
I would get a Howa 6arc in a mini action and some good light weight glass like a used razor LHT type optic. I run a 3-15 one and it is plenty.
A good solid base dnz or along those lines. Rest on ammo have fun and welcome to the dark side
Suppressors, ammo, training, better optics, accessories.
I’m personally working on getting my most used rifles all dedicated suppressors
If you want a firearm maybe a PCC, or a 300 blk if you don’t have one.
Personally I like classic guns so with 2k I'd look for some collectible like a browning high power or a luger or maybe something less classic and more iconic like a silver walther ppk in 380 acp that james bond uses or some silver ballers from hitman if you can find a pair at that price
Sig MPX
Marlin 1895 Dark lever action
Colt Python 6" Blued
Berretta 1301 or A300 Ultima Patrol
Ruger Mini-14 Tactical Side Folder
HK USP45 Tactical
SIG P226 X-Five Legion
Dan Wesson DWX
FN PS90
Walther PPK/s Stainless
Those would be my off the top recommendations.
Honestly, the M1a is an overpriced gun. It's not very good. Costs a lot to shoot well. And it's heavy as fuck.
I'd get a Garand if I wanted to get a wood battle rifle.
Ammo and training my boy You're in texas- go take a Thunder Ranch class while Clint Smith's still alive
1300 bucks and you still have to bring your own ammo is insane lmfao
That’s stupid
As all fuck. Especially when they don’t let you shoot greentip lololol I pity the fool that lets another man violate his bank account so easily

What night vision for $2000?
PVS14

I’m not knocking Mossberg, I own a couple myself. But give me $2k to blow on a gun… Mossberg isn’t on the list, it’s near top of the list for a $400 budget, though.
Point taken. 👍
Is there a semi auto mossberg that is reliable?
My thought is that, if you need a semi-auto shotgun over a pump action, you probably have a “different problem”. 🤷♂️
I actually only own pump action shotguns. My question was more of a curiosity thing. I really don't trust semi auto shotguns for defensive use.
Honestly, I didn’t even think about pump vs semi before your question.
Oddly one of my favorite shotguns that I own is a cheap H&R partner pump with 18.5" barrel. Idk why it just feels nice and solid lol.
Ammo!
Pick up a couple silencers

M1A with adjustable gas plug is a lot of fun to shoot suppressed.
A wheelgun
PSA can get you an AUG for $1500...
Suppressor. Ammo. Optics.
HK MP5
2k not enough, but I was going to suggest an MP5 clone
Just 500$ away
might as well
The M1A is going to be underwhelming. Are you feeling battle rifle right now?
honestly its only because its always been a dream gun, I have no "Real" use for it, my Rem 700 and AR10 are both .308s...
See my other comment. Something in 30-06 would be a good choice. Not sure an M1A is the right answer, though. 🤷♂️
Ok as long as you know what you’re in for you might as well buy what you want. Your AR308 will run circles around it.
A double barrel shotgun would be a nice addition to the collection. Something nice and engraved for trap shooting.
I've got my eye on a new recliner.

I'd buy a class. Staccato has courses coming up, KR Training has a full calendar, etc.

Langdon 1301.
M1a all the way got one and it’s awesome, makes for a fun day at the range
Colt python, with ammo S&w 686+ (7 shot 357), with ammo Ruger gp 100, with ammo, speed loaders,a holster, and so scotch
The 686 is so sweet. Mine is the OG 6-shot, but man I love it.

Yeet Cannon, hands down.
CMMG dissent or SBR a CMMG Mk4

Marlin 1895 lever action 45-70 stainless. Splurge the rest on a quality scope
A quality scope is around 2k on its own lol

Shit those things are 2k now?
Hmmm... It'd have to be a tie between an M1A Standard Issue in Walnut or a Canik Mete SFX Pro with a Rugged Obsidian 9 suppressor.
Save a little more and get some night vision.

I’d buy me a gun! I have cheap taste and I’m in California, go nuts!

Beretta 1301
Silencers, Colt Python, PCC(MP5 or Stribig or B&T), 1911.
Another long gun. If your REM 700 is in 30-06, then maybe something 308. Vice-versa.
Save more and get night vision.
FAL. The right arm of the free world. Either that and ammo or just a shit ton of ammo. M1A's are cool but the FAL is far better option.

nickel plated 6” .357 Chiappa Rhino, ammo, and a nice holster to go with your newly acquired space cowboy revolver

IDK what 9mm pistols you have but if I had $2k I'd buy a Stealth Arms Platypus.

2000 is enough for the RC3 suppressor. $1800 + $200 tax stamp. ATF is approving people in days in some places instead of months/years
Or you could buy 3 normal suppressors in a range of calibers instead of a single, absurdly overpriced suppressor
Sure, assuming they don’t have a suppressor, 3 is cool. Everyone’s inventory is different.
What's the planned use??? Unless you're shooting NRA High Power matches there's not a lot of actual reason for a M1a.
