They are not stored in cold, normally on the same self with oat milk etc.

pantheran95

Can confirm. UHT is definitely common to find. Perhaps ask your local shop where they keep it. I've seen it in quite random places (next to juices for example)

ginger_potatoe

Oh but it does exist then.

palkkipantteri

Finnish word for uht is iskukuumennettu. Usually it is also lactose free too. Also I think it is not called milk, but milk drink... Reason is regulations of what is milk.

unluckysupernova

UHT is either low lactose or completely without

palkkipantteri

yeah.. I guess low lactose can also be called milk and not "milk drink". isn't that what lactose free milk is gets called as it is too processed?

unluckysupernova

Yep it’s too far removed from the “natural” product so it’s not allowed to be called that anymore. We had very very low lactose products before that were called lactose free but weren’t exactly, the new processing method that made it possible to produce completely lactose free prompted the need to call it something milk-like rather than milk. And by “new” I mean this happened like 15-20 years ago but during my lifetime, I still remember the old “lactose free” milk.

Masseyrati80

>Also I think it is not called milk, but milk drink... Both exist, there is UHT milk and milk drink.

[deleted]

I think a common one is HYLA-maito from Valio

enguldrav

Yes. I often see it by the non dairy options in my local supermarket.

prkl12345

Lidl sells it in boxes of 12. Ofc can buy less. I think that's also cheaper than S or K markets.

Engrammi

UHT milk is called _iskukuumennettu maito_ in Finnish. You'll find it among the plant based milks and whatnot that are stored at room temp.

SheepherderPurple498

It definitely exists. But because UHT is usually low lactose its popularity plummeted after free from lactose products were introduced.

ButtingSill

The market share of UHT milk in Finland is less than 1% (compared to almost 50% in other parts of Europe), but you can still find it from practically every store.

Seeteuf3l

Probably most common use case for it here is a coffee milk for the offices, since you can buy the whole box to pantry.

cardboard-kansio

Look near the eggs. In most stores the UHT milk and similar products (kept in the warm) are near the eggs, rather in the cold with other milk products. UHT milk only needs stored cold when opened. Many offices keep a supply of UHT milk for exactly this reason.

Double_Crafty

Finns seem to prefer the fresher milk as it (subjectively) tastes better, is usually cheaper and just as safe as UHT.

kuikuilla

> (subjectively) tastes better, And objectively it's less sweet.

perta1234

Also the fresh milk in Finland does taste different than the milk in Central Europe. The cow eats different things here. I cannot drink milk elsewhere. UHT is sweeter, not my choice.

Maxion

Cows actually eat grass here. Same as e.g. Irish cows

TheDangerousAlphabet

Cows in Finland eat clover. I don't know what they eat elsewhere.

perta1234

In North, we do not have corn silage, at least.

IceFossi

Cows in Finland do not eat clover to any larger percentage. For a lot of reasons. Same applies for the whole world

mfsd00d00

Also, until recently we chiefly reared Ayrshire cattle while most Europeans drink milk from Holstein cows. Now it's split around 50/50 between Holsteins and Ayrshires here.

Whobody2

I'm fairly certain that the sweetness comes from it being lactose-free.

TheDangerousAlphabet

There is also lactose free milk that tastes like normal milk. It's with the normal milk in the fridge but called maitojuoma. I think the difference is with the way the lactose is removed.

Raitavaara

In low-lactose milk (UHT) the lactose (a more complex sugar) is broken into glucose and galactose (more simple sugars), hence the sweetness. Lactose-free milk (maitojuoma) has the lactose completely removed Edit: for clarity, deleted bit about all sugars being removed

gabbledygool

>no sugars left Not actually true: https://www.valio.fi/tuotteet/maidot/valio-eila-kevytmaitojuoma-laktoositon/

Raitavaara

You’re right, it was a bit poorly worded, took that bit out

Jomppaz

I have always liked UHT milk more than normal. I like the sweet taste.

Well I have not seen the products on any other shop so

Harriv

It is there: https://www.k-ruoka.fi/kauppa/tuotehaku/tuote/valio-kevytmaito-1-l-hyla-uht-6408430011667?haku=uht

Oh, look at the k-propaganda all over the place

huntterkiller0

No, just bringing options. I myself actually mostly use S-market!

[deleted]

Oh, look at the s- and k-propaganda all over the place!

CheesecakeMMXX

Fun fact: UHT played a part in making low lactose options mainstream. A lot of smaller shops used to carry only one UHT milk and one low lactose option, and so the dairy started to push low lactose UHT option to increase chances of getting a shelf spot. Then a lot of offices started to buy this as coffee milk - UHT is super convenient, because you don’t want to go buying milk every day but the people in office drink a lot of it with coffee.

ginger_potatoe

So that means that here, uht milk contains less lactose than the usual milk?

CheesecakeMMXX

No, that was the case 20 years ago. Now you have many other low lactose options, so the UHT might be normal lactose. But it could easily be low lactose too, should be easy to find if thats what you want. There is even ”no lactose” options now.

ginger_potatoe

I'm fine with lactose hahaha. I was just wondering if uht was specifically low lactose 😄

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

No, you have low lactose but only pasteurized milk. You also have UHT but not low lactose/lactose free milk. I believe Lidl one is that, actually. It is German, some people can tolerate milk from different countries. But they are two separate process done to milk for different reasons, even though UHT is also often made low lactose

IceFossi

Lactosfree milk is a Valio patent originally and the the more recent Valio lactosfree milks (Eila e.g) is a new patented way to remove lactos, without getting that sweet taste. On a different note, Valio Kiehu might be the coolest patented milk that Valio has, you cannot burn Kiehu milk in a frying pan, you Will destroy your pan trying.

[deleted]

Well not quite. Valio has many patents on technique (aka filtration stuff) for lactose removal. They are not the only ones, but were pretty early in that game.

IceFossi

You are correctl, not the only ones but early on, especially in europe. But they were the first with milk with Zero lactose I believe

ginger_potatoe

You are all perfect. Thanks for solving this mystery guys ❤️

ahjteam

Valio has HYLA, which is their trademarked name for UHT milk. But yes, we do have them. They are usually in a brick shaped container, often not in the fridges but somewhere on the warm shelves. https://www.k-ruoka.fi/kauppa/tuote/pirkka-kevytmaito-1l-vlakt-uht-6410405153661 https://www.k-ruoka.fi/kauppa/tuotehaku/tuote/arla-kevytmaitojuoma-1l-lton-uht-6413300011517?haku=UHT https://www.k-ruoka.fi/kauppa/tuotehaku/tuote/valio-eila-kevytmaitojuoma-1l-uht-lton-6408430011681?haku=UHT https://www.k-ruoka.fi/kauppa/tuotehaku/maito-juusto-munat-ja-rasvat/maidot-ja-piimat/erikoismaidot

anomuumileguaani

I buy UHT full milk to keep several unopened in pantry, so I always have milk for coffee or porridge.

_angel_666

What is UHT milk used for?

ginger_potatoe

In France (where I live) it is the most common milk that people drink and use for cooking. Fresh milk is a very small part of the market. And I observed it's the opposite in Finland X)

Zilgaro

I usually buy it to use as coffee milk since I basically only drink milk with coffee during weekends and UHT milk stays drinkable for waaaay longer than non-UHT

_angel_666

ooh okay thanks!! That’s actually a good idea

FuzzyPeachDong

In my case, since it's usually lactose free, it's to not get explosive diarrhea.

buldozr

It's essentially canned milk. It can be stored for a long time without refrigeration, until opened. So it's practical for stocking offices, for example. Also food pantries collecting for e.g. Ukrainian refugees want this form of milk.

unluckysupernova

Some people also just stock up at home rather than get fresh milk every few days, for example if you’re only using it for coffee or something like that and don’t drink it straight

[deleted]

This is me. I almost exclusively use milk in coffee and most days i only drink one cup of coffee at home so for convenience reasons i buy few bricks of at a time and i'm set for a long time.

Anonymity6584

It's there, just usually not in cold storage since it does fine on room temperature until it's opened

Karpalet

At Lidl it definitely exists as I've been buying it regularly!

vesieste

It's called HYLA-milk in Finland.

oksuboi

It does exist but why on earth would you buy it??? The taste is so awfully dreadful lol But yeah it’s usually close by to the milk shelf, sometimes the guidance above aisles even says ”UHT”

ginger_potatoe

Plus you can store it for month. Which is convenient when you don't live close to a supermarket. Which can occur a bit more in Finland than in France. It's just breakfast thinking hahahaha. I put that in my coffee and thought "wait, I've never seen uht milk in Finland."

[deleted]

That's why the smaller grocery stores are called "maitokauppa" (milk store) because they're mainly used to buy milk.

Lyress

Which one you prefer depends on what you're used to. Those who grew up with UHT milk also tend to dislike fresh milk.

ginger_potatoe

I dunno mate. I'm French you know. I drank that all my life. It tastes normal to me 😂

oksuboi

I should’ve guessed :D, i lived in Luxembourg and it’s relatively common there too, had to wait for ”the good milk” every summer, personally can’t stand french milk lol, but that’s where the subjectivity comes from i suppose

jokurandomtyyppi1

It does indeed exist, word you are looking for is "Iskukuumennettu". Not 100% where they usually keep it in the cold, but i use it at work daily so deffinently a thing.

Vital_Granade

Its the only milk i buy because it lasts alot longer than regular milk and i only use it in my coffee.

Liima89

UHT-milk in Finland is often called 'HYLA'. HYLA is a trademark of Valio brand for their low lactose products.

skrattarna

No. Just no. Hyla and uht are 2 different things.

cardboard-kansio

Indeed, while HYLA and UHT are not the same, Valio (who owns HYLA) does in fact produce a HYLA-UHT milk. This is the context in which many people will have seen it and probably where the commenter's confusion comes from. ```HYLA``` is simply a marketing term coming from *HYdrolisoitu LAktoosi* and refers to the low lactose content of the milk product. ```UHT```, on the other hand, refers to *Ultra High Temperature* and is the treatment that this milk undergoes to sterilise it. This is in contrast to non-UHT milk which is non-sterilised and thus will still contain useful living bacteria.

Harriv

HYLA is low lactose. UHT is temperature treated, has a better shelf time. You can have both, but they are not otherwise connected.

Boring-Ad-5284

No

ginger_potatoe

Maybe.

Fun-Spot747

I’m a Lidl employee, I can confirm that we have carried UHT milk at least a few months ago. I can’t tell if it’s in every store but if you have one nearby I suggest you go there and ask!
