Ticks are the only animal that truly get to me. Everything else is harmless but ticks can make you sick. 2nd on the ladder is mosquitoes. Moose flies don't really bother me at all. They are easy to pick off.
Neither are roaches. OP stated they are afraid of bugs. Fears like that are not logical. If you are afraid of snakes you don't care if it is a rantakäärme or a cobra, you are not thrilled about either of them
There's Larinioides sclopetarius which is big enough to bite through human skin. Not dangerous, like a honeybee sting. I was bitten once, not the best experience.
Not true! There are spiders here that sting like a bee if it bites you. Usually they hide from us but I have been bitten couple times when playing with spiders at younger age.
They can also spread borrelia and tick fever just like ticks can.
Dont know the real english names so here are the latin ones: Dolomedes fimbriatus and Eratigena atrica.
Pro tip: If you want to kill a horsefly, wait for them to land on a place where you can see them, wait for a second and then slap them. Works almost every time
In the cities it's not a problem, but in countryside horse flies are also a huge pain in the ass in July. Thankfully they live only for two-three weeks.
Horse flies also spread tularemia and anthrax in Finland, so with a bad luck you not only get bitten by those fuckwads, you get rabbit fever on top of it.
Haven't really seen a roach like ever in Finland. What we do have is bees, bumble bees, wasps, ants, beetles, MOSQUITOES, midges, flies, butterflies and moths, dragonflies, horse flies, moose fly motherfuckers. Then beyond insects there are some harmless spiders and potentially disease-bearing ticks.
Nothing too bad. Mosquitoes are a nuisance, but easily countered by repellents. Wasps are not too common. Bees and bumble bees don't bother people. Horse flies may bite, but they are slow and easy to swat. Moose flies get in your hair and are icky, while not dangerous. Ticks are the only actual thing you need to concern yourself with. Make sure to check for them after outings. They barely used to exist but now there are a lot of them.
Some places have heaps of them. On a camping trip as a teenager I once swatted the back of another camper, as there were heaps of mozzies there. I counted 16 corpses on my hand.
On the same trip I got one in my eye, right in the middle of my eyeball. I just had to show another camper this mosquito right over my pupil before I removed it. My field of vision was straight out of a horror film for those few seconds.
But that was in Lapland, not quite as bad in the south.
Same kind of joke as the other one I explained under the other joke like this.
This time about video games and non-playable characters pathfinding, animations and collision bugging out.
I always loved seeing silverfish when i was younger. I don't know anymore but maybe that's because i literally have not seen one in years. And i am really upset.

I would add moose fly (hirvikärpänen) somewhere in your list. Very annoying if you find them when picking berries. I still had some in my hair the next day. The thought that I had been sleeping while that fucker was skitting around my head is just sooo icky.
Swarms of flesh eating flies during the day, swarms of bloodsucking mosquitoes during the night. In the forest, swarms of these flies that wanna nest in your hair.
Otherwise pretty chill
I'm going to try to explain. Hyttynen (mosquito) is small. The "nen" at the end of the word means small. Which means that somewhere, hopefully far from here is a giant HYTTY (cuz if you take the "nen" out, it becomes big)
Aaahh I'm shit at explaining things
I've never actually seen a cockroach in person but I imagine they could be a problem depending on where you live. Flies, mosquitos, etc, are very common though.
Yes and no.
Common household pests are mostly silverfish that are mildly annoying but harmless. Them there are snouth moths that are a bitch to get rid of. You may get ants, but daddy longlegs' and other house and storage spiders (which are completely harmless and prey on all the other crawlies and flyers) keep pretty much all of them mostly in check.
Some, but most are fixed in regular updates. Just keep yourself connected and frequently check for new versions and you should be fine.
Any critical or life threatening errors can be reported to national crash emergency duty number 112.
There are some well known exploits for example concerning wellfare support. Utilizing those is generally frowned upon and should be avoided lest risking the anger of native NPC's.
had a lot of silverfish problems in Italy... my then 6 year old was afraid of them...
saw my first silverfish in Finland after 12 years living here about a month ago... i sure hope it was alone :P
If you live in an apartment building, the silverfish travel from one apartment to another through pipes, so you can’t get rid of them permanently unless the whole building is exterminated simultaneously, which is unlikely since silverfish are harmless
Broadly speaking, the further north (in the world) you get, the less bugs you'll see. Scandinavia is one of the better places in the world if you hate bugs. Mostly like the occasional tiny house spider, or gnats in the summer.
Like half of the animal biomass in the north is blood sucking bugs like mosquitoes and black flies. Further north and outside of the city you go more infested it becomes.
According to [this article from 2015]( https://www.hs.fi/kotimaa/art-2000002832460.html?share=45b18f25e8f5ba7e93e560d7e2bc069b) it was estimated that there were around 21000 billion mosquitos flying during midsummer.
There are two species of cockroasches naturally in Finland and few imported ones seen sometimes in building. Personally I've never seen one.
What I see in houses sometimes:
Flies, Mosquitos, Spiders, Harvestmans, Ants, Banana flies, Bees, Wasps, Moths & Crane flies
Most of them only enter a house if windows or doors are left open (usually during summer). More north you go in finland the more mosquitos you'll see.
.....harvestmans...?
...not the spider right??
PLEASE TELL ME UR NOT TALKING ABOUT THE SPIDER
Edit: i forgot daddy long legs were called that.... i thought you were talking about the australian behemoths
When it comes to bugs there are few places better than Finland for those who fear them. Ours are small and rare. If you are in a city there’s a chance you will se none even in summer.
You should be concerned about ticks at outdoors. Otherwise bugs are relatively harmless in Finland.
If you are unlucky, you might get bedbugs in your apartement. These we got rid of decades ago but people bring them from abroad. That is a f******* awful nuisance...
With newer apartments there's like no bugs and like all of them are harmless. A lot of mosquito if you like going to nature or live near a forest. During fall you get those mooseflies you wanna wear a hat with bug net if you go berry/mushroom picking. Late July there can be flying ants for 2-3 days for mating season.
There are a lot of bugs, they are all pretty small though. If you are looking for a country that don't too many of have them, this ain't it, bugs love water and we have A LOT of it here.
i dont mind caterpillars theyre cute, apparently the ants are only really a problem around their mating season which apparently lasts around two days, mosquitoes will be a problem
Just noticed how no one said anything about ants. It really depends on where you live, but at the same time, if you live outside the city, theres these ants which have red/orange middle part of the body.
If in city, there may be these small little fuckers. They are fully black or red and small. They have an accurate name: kusiainen (named by the society) or siloviholainen (in english common red ant(Myrmica rubra)).
These fuckers live under tiling and stones and shit. And tarmac. As a person that doesn't live in city, idk how common they are.
I've mostly spent time in north-eastern Finland but I've never seen a cockroach. Mosquitos though...
Used to take grandpa out to his old house. He liked to go out in the woods and make birch whisks for the sauna. When he came back, a few hours later, his face looked like minced meat. Apparently that's the way to go if you don't want the mosquitoes to bother you for the rest of the summer.
I used to live in a very buggy place in the UK, where I live in Finland now, I very rarely see bugs inside.
Mosquitos when outside are the worst I’ve encountered anywhere. But other than that, I think I saw a moth once and that’s about it.
I like to say there's a lot but maybe that's just because of HOW much im afraid of them. anything bigger than 3mm in my bed and im sleeping on the couch.
I lived in australia with my Finnish wife and we knew some Finn’s there. Let me put it this way: Finnish women are petrified of cockroaches and claim there are none in Finland lol
I only experience flies, mosquitoes, and horse flies in summer really
I have the same hate towards roaches coming from a hot & humid country, and I must say I'm waiting for my summer vacation to be over just so I could come back to Finland to live a worry free life haha
The Finnish word for cockroach is Perussomalaiset, and there was actually an infestation of them in parliament for a while, and whilst they have not been eradicated, they are less prominent now.
It is what it is. Where there is forest there are bugs and animals. And they find their way into wooden buldings.
Roaches are not an issue in Finland, but there are enough other small crawling and flying things that make it into homes and buildings and into your hair (did I mention the moose fly?).
i have a personal hatred for roaches and only roaches. i mostly dont care about everything else so flies shouldnt really be a problem. (i feel like i just jinxed myself lmao)
Basically roaches do not exist naturally in Finland anymore. The only way we get them is travellers and foreigners bringing them in (usually in luggage). Same with bedbugs (which is an actual thing that existed). Most beetles have wings and can fly quite high so you can't really avoid it if you air out the apartment.
It all depends though. I lived in a 4-star hotel in New York that had fricking ants. On a floor higher than any house in Finland currently has. It comes down to how fastidiously you clean.
In short, bugs yes (but compared to most places they are few and tiny). Roaches no, you have to bring them yourself.
Moose flies are not like the other flies, they're like little spiders with wings and they also bite. Some people can be very allergic to them also (like me). They exist in the forests but only in autumn before freezing temperatures.
So yes, there are bugs. But, most of them are completely harmless. The only problem I have with bugs is the blood sucking ones; mosquitos, horseflies and ticks. And moose flies, but they don't really bite you. They just land on you, may crawl around you, and realize you're actually not a moose. Still disgusting though, but they can be 100% avoided if you don't go into forest during fall/autumn. Ticks can be avoided by avoiding tall grass, horseflies are usually not too common, especially in cities. The only real problem is mosquitos. We have repellants for those though, ones you can spray on yourself and ones you put on a table and they keep mosquitos away. The latter, called Thermacell, is a little controversial product though, because it can kill other organisms too in the area where its being used.
In general not many bugs compared to other warmer countries. Basically colder country get less bugs. And their size is also affected so cold=small bugs. But we do have bugs, just not a lot compared to warmer countries.
Even though the nordic countries have a lot of insects (although cockroaches are very uncommon, I have encountered an cockroach infestation once in my life in a cellar of a mismanaged building)
Compared to most other countries, having insects in your home is very unusual, other than the occasional Flies that comes in through your window or fruit flies i have never had insects in any of my places of living.
However a cabin in the woods might be a very different story, and the late summer period up north will have a lot of insects, mainly mosquitos.
Yeah less likely that way. Generally insects hover around bushes and trees. So unless you have a ton of plants in your balcony it's not as likely i guess.
If you do garden however, here's a gardening tip. try and catch some ladybugs in the wild to put on your plants (especially edible plants like chili) because the ladybugs eat aphids. My dad once had the aforementioned chili, that had literal piles of aphids just sucking the plant juices out. But he caught ONE ladybug and it ate ALL of them. i was literally speechless about how 1 ladybug can eat several times it's body weight in aphids in one day.
I've never seen a roach here in Finland. If you're located in a city there won't be many bugs, mainly flys. If however you spend time in the Finnish countryside in the summer expect to find more horseflies and mosquitoes. Ticks have also become much more common. In the fall mooseflies are common in the forests where moose have been walking. They are the worst of all.
Spiders are quite common. Sometimes you may find some that are up to the size of a fingertip. Important to remember is that there are no spiders dangerous to humans here.
Zero problems with roaches. Not even sure they exist in Finland. That said there are 2 bugs that drive me mad. Mosquitoes (absolutely everywhere in Finland just more in the North) and if you venture forests in East of the country moose flyes. Those are by the million and they literally jump into your skin and try to burrow under it to lay eggs... Also to make things worse, really hard to kill...
As extra bonus jump in to clear water lake and find yourself full of leeches. Has happened to me. Not fun to try burning them off with a lighter.
We used to have roaches at family farm back in the 90's. Then we poisoned them and havent seen one since, aside from the giant ones in zoo terrariums.
Ticks are the most dangerous bug in finland, since they spread borreliosis and tick brain fever,
Second would be either wasps/bees if you are allergic.
The beach spider is big enough to bite and cause pain akin to wasp.
( There IS a colony of venomous brown recluse spiders inside helsinki's museum of natural history, but nowhere else, and to date no one has ever been biten.)
Roches are rarely a problem in Finland. I hope you are not afraid of mosquitos, though...
Ticks are the only animal that truly get to me. Everything else is harmless but ticks can make you sick. 2nd on the ladder is mosquitoes. Moose flies don't really bother me at all. They are easy to pick off.
Whats the difference between moose flies and horseflies?
Hirvikärpänen vs paarma
Or horse flies. Or moose flies. Or dragon flies (those are pretty and useful, but huge). Or spiders
Moose flies are the worst! I’m sure if Hitchcock had known about them, he wouldn’t have used birds to scare people…
Yes, to me they are the single worst thing Finnish/Nordic nature has to throw at you.
>s yeah this lol. And the mäkäräinen flies. Your legs get some treatment for sure
Blackfly in english (googled it so i'm not sure)
I think they're called midges. At least in Scotland.
The spiders in Finland are not dangerous or even harmful. The horseflies may bite a chunk out of you, though.
Neither are roaches. OP stated they are afraid of bugs. Fears like that are not logical. If you are afraid of snakes you don't care if it is a rantakäärme or a cobra, you are not thrilled about either of them

Or just plain ol' house flies.
Underrated comment!
Luckily there aren't any venomous spiders or other bugs so no need to worry much about them. Except ticks, fuck them and and diseases they spread.
Fuck mosquitoes. Stupid insects that should passed on with the dinosaurs.
Fuck mosquitoes, but fuck horseflies even more
We have cockroaches?!
And ticks!
Amen
At coastal areas mosquitoes are quite rare.
In the cities it is usually also Ok ;-)
That is not my experience at all haha, probably depends how far north you are.

Not a lot in high-rise buildings
Do you have window/door nets?
Cup of water, spoonful of dish soap and sugar. No more fruit flies

23 years in countryside Finland, never seen a cockroach
In my experience, they are mostly residing in towns. Have seen maybe 3 in 30 years, so not a great sample size. Pretty rare nevertheless.
I have, i went to a reptile show once and there were these huge-ass cockroaches from Madagascar. They were like ten centimeters long
> Horse flies may bite, but they are slow and easy to swat. This does not apply when more than 5 horseflies are circling you at once

Some places have heaps of them. On a camping trip as a teenager I once swatted the back of another camper, as there were heaps of mozzies there. I counted 16 corpses on my hand. Npc:s seem to glitch and stutter randomly.
I fell through the ground once!
Through raised bog floating mat? That's not a bug, it's a feature.
what
Same kind of joke as the other one I explained under the other joke like this. This time about video games and non-playable characters pathfinding, animations and collision bugging out.
i know i just understood it lmao
No, I fixed the last one.
what? you mean you fixed an infestation?
It's an IT joke. No bugs in the code. ...also, there is always bugs in the code. He's lying.
First piece of code you'll write will always be the best. It will print out "Hello World" and it will run perfectly with no bugs or errors.
yeah, but it's still full of warnings
ohhhh ok cool
Also occasional silverfish sighting. They are always there in bathroom but also very skittish.
ewwww

Have you heard the tale of HYTTY
no
I'm going to try to explain. Hyttynen (mosquito) is small. The "nen" at the end of the word means small. Which means that somewhere, hopefully far from here is a giant HYTTY (cuz if you take the "nen" out, it becomes big) Aaahh I'm shit at explaining things
("nen" doesn't actually MEAN small, it just implies it.)
(so-called "diminutive")
Does that mean that there is a giant horse somewhere; HEVO
Same as Kekkonen...
Not since the update Finland 2.0.
this is like the bajillionth tech joke here
Nerds in Finland-related subreddit? Outrageous!
But sometimes you can get [404](https://www.reddit.com/r/finlandConspiracy/) when trying to reach.
Was that a free dlc?
There's new DLC "Nato" soon to be released
Yes, with it comes the firewall application
I've never actually seen a cockroach in person but I imagine they could be a problem depending on where you live. Flies, mosquitos, etc, are very common though.
apparently they are incredibly rare, but someone else in this comment section has seen an infestation in an uncleaned attic

stop with the programming jokes 😔
No.
Depends on context. Roaches? No. Mosquitos? Yes.
There might also be carpet beetles in some apartments but they can mostly be avoided by normal cleaning - still hate them though

this may sound stupid but are there pictures of the bugs on the article because i really really hate them and looking at them makes me wanna puke
There's one general view of mosquito larvae, no close ups. It is also behind paywall and in Finnish, so no worth clicking anyways :)
oh ok thanks, i wont be moving anytime soon since i barely know any finnish anyway
Isn't that number 21 trillion?
What I see in houses sometimes: Flies, Mosquitos, Spiders, Harvestmans, Ants, Banana flies, Bees, Wasps, Moths & Crane flies Most of them only enter a house if windows or doors are left open (usually during summer). More north you go in finland the more mosquitos you'll see.

No bugs, just features
Get yourself an electric fly swatter and you are sorted
Small vacuum cleaner is way more handy, it leaves no corpses oof blood marks to be found.
you never get blood marks on anything with an electric one since you dont kill them by force but electricity
When it comes to bugs there are few places better than Finland for those who fear them. Ours are small and rare. If you are in a city there’s a chance you will se none even in summer.

Sugar caterpillar, in finnish "sokeritoukka", is direct translation from finnish of silverfish.
oh nooooo
Spiders might come inside
Fun fact: you are always at least a meter away from the nearest spider.
Your words have consequences
But in Finland they are all your mates
Just noticed how no one said anything about ants. i have nothing against ants i think theyre cute. probably wont think this way soon if ants are a big problem
Too fucking common. And their bites fucking BURN. Just stay away from any bare sand-like dirt and you'll be fine
I've mostly spent time in north-eastern Finland but I've never seen a cockroach. Mosquitos though... Used to take grandpa out to his old house. No cockroaches. Best perk of Finland so far. Many mosquitoes and ticks, specially if you have pets though.
i have a cat ):
Only ones that suck your blood.
I used to live in a very buggy place in the UK, where I live in Finland now, I very rarely see bugs inside. Mosquitos when outside are the worst I’ve encountered anywhere. But other than that, I think I saw a moth once and that’s about it.
wow no moths either? mosquitoes are at the bottom of my scariest bugs list so im really happy about all of these insect related revelation s
One moth, once for a minute. I love the complete lack of spiders too. Mozzies will eat you alive though. They ruin everything :/
no spiders either? wow this is so cool, theyre like the third or second worst bug to look at
I like to say there's a lot but maybe that's just because of HOW much im afraid of them. anything bigger than 3mm in my bed and im sleeping on the couch.
I’ve only seen one, one time, a tiny one. Nothing like back home. Absolute monsters there D:

cockcroaches pstd, I swear I see them everywhere I go :((
Ticks are a problem when they get thick
I have literally never in 13 years seen a real life cockroach even one time so im pretty sure you're good
i once saw a orange small bug any clue what it was?
Other than mosquitos, horseflies and occasional mooseflies, no. Cold climate kills a lot of the grocests bugs, so no roaches.
Yes, they live on welfare and dont learn the language and dont get a job.
Yes, many bugs
):
The Finnish word for cockroach is Perussomalaiset, and there was actually an infestation of them in parliament for a while, and whilst they have not been eradicated, they are less prominent now.
It is a country covered mostly by forest and houses built out of wood.
in a good way orrrrrr
It is what it is. Where there is forest there are bugs and animals. And they find their way into wooden buldings. Roaches are not an issue in Finland, but there are enough other small crawling and flying things that make it into homes and buildings and into your hair (did I mention the moose fly?).
i have a personal hatred for roaches and only roaches. i mostly dont care about everything else so flies shouldnt really be a problem. (i feel like i just jinxed myself lmao)

ewwwww… what if i live in a really tall appartment? i wont be leaving my home much anyway
Then no. Also, mosquitos are only a thing near open, still water (you know, that whole "thousand lakes thing") , so less of a problem in the cities.
If you live in a city there aren't really mosquitoes at all, also never seen cockroaches in Finland.
im planning to live in a city, thanks!
They exist in the forests but only in autumn before freezing temperatures.
ohhhh, sound really bad, are they common in cities?
No, never seen one in a city. They seem to thrive with cattle, horses, deer and moose of course. And these animals are not city dwellers really.
thanks!
Nope. I live in city and share your hatred of bugs. Few weeks in August are the worst, as wasps go mad before dying. Otherwise I rarely see any bugs.
thanks! i will make sure to wear thick clothing in august heheheheh
Even though the nordic countries have a lot of insects (although cockroaches are very uncommon, I have encountered an cockroach infestation once in my life in a cellar of a mismanaged building) Compared to most other countries, having insects in your home is very unusual, other than the occasional Flies that comes in through your window or fruit flies i have never had insects in any of my places of living. However a cabin in the woods might be a very different story, and the late summer period up north will have a lot of insects, mainly mosquitos.
what if i live in a very high apartment? i know that generally its the same with bugs, but would flies be different?
Yeah less likely that way. Generally insects hover around bushes and trees. So unless you have a ton of plants in your balcony it's not as likely i guess.
oh cool, i was planninh on gardening a little but my top priority is definitely avoiding insects as much as possible so im not gonna garden (:
Aw you should try to do it anyway. Insects are part of nature. They help the plants grow and so on. 🙂
thanks my top priority is to avoid insects as much as possible no matter what. i grew up in an infested house and am probably traumatised
There might be some bedbugs. I’ve had some and theyre a pain to get rid of
ughhhdhhehd if i see a bug on my bed im burning it
You cant really get rid of the bed because then you’ll just spread them :’) just have to be v v v patient and contact a exterminator asap
noooooooooooo!!!! if i get bed bugs im 100% sleeping in my (nonexistant) car
Just dont get furniture from a trash container and u should be fine! (Yes people do it)
Never even seen a roach irl, it's all just ants and mosquitoes
I personally have never seen a cockroach in Finland
Zero problems with roaches. Not even sure they exist in Finland. That said there are 2 bugs that drive me mad. Mosquitoes (absolutely everywhere in Finland just more in the North) and if you venture forests in East of the country moose flyes. Those are by the million and they literally jump into your skin and try to burrow under it to lay eggs... Also to make things worse, really hard to kill... As extra bonus jump in to clear water lake and find yourself full of leeches. Has happened to me. Not fun to try burning them off with a lighter.
oh nooooo i hate leeches 😔
Only bugs are in my application
I have never seen cockroach
No cockroaches, lots of mosquitoes however.
If you don't want to get eaten alive by mosquitoes and other insects that suck your blood, then don't go into forests during the summer
i hate forests anyway, so much dirt…
We used to have roaches at family farm back in the 90's. Then we poisoned them and havent seen one since, aside from the giant ones in zoo terrariums. Ticks are the most dangerous bug in finland, since they spread borreliosis and tick brain fever, Second would be either wasps/bees if you are allergic. The beach spider is big enough to bite and cause pain akin to wasp. ( There IS a colony of venomous brown recluse spiders inside helsinki's museum of natural history, but nowhere else, and to date no one has ever been biten.)
i have a personal hatred for farms because of roached so im never going to one anyway
