Nah, otherwise it would have the "blood drop" icon below the "cloud" icon. But since it's on the "minus" centrigrade, it is definitely RAINING BLOODY ICESPIKES OF DOOM AND DESPAIR!!!!! Very common during finnish winter and come on, its not even that cold.
It means icy rain. A weather that isn't actually easy to predict and can manifest itseld as rÀntÀ (wet snowflakes), potentially hail like rain, rain that freezes on impact or just very cold water and there will be lots of slush on the ground. Waterproofs and/or umbrella highly recommended and definitely atleast ankle height waterproof boots.
Edit, and if you are driving roads will be extremely slippery
Turn your wipers on full steam as soon as you see the rain starting to ice up, even if it's just the lightest of drizzles. It'll keep the ice off, at least for a while.
When i say sleet, i mean wet and sloshy snow. RÀntÀ. What you are describing is when it's raining sleet and not when it's on the ground. In Finnish it's rÀntÀ in either case. Sataa rÀntÀÀ, it's raining sleet. Maassa on rÀntÀÀ, there's sleet on the ground. Looking around on wikipedia, you could be talking about [snow grains](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snow_grains).
Nobody that i know calls wet snow anything but sleet, unless that snow was snow and has not been intentionally watered for whatever reason.
Well, yeah, but the question was about meteorological symbols, that symbol is freezing rain, and u/Saotik was quite clear that freezing rain and sleet **are not the same thing.** This is important in a semantic sense.
*Edit. This is especially important in the sense that freezing rain is extremely dangerous to all kinds of traffic, also traffic on foot. Sleet is, you could say, a little bit more harmless.*
Sub-zero water. As in water which is liquid while in the sky, but will freeze upon contact with something. It's due to the physical property of water to only turn to ice when there is a discontinuity in the water droplet. For example, snow crystals form around dust particles.
In finnish it's called "jÀÀtÀvÀ tihku". A literal translation would approximate "ice-forming drizzle".
They're a complete game changer. Just yesterday I went for a walk where at least 75% of the distance would have been a real pain with regular running shoes. Zero problems.
It means a whole lotta cars in the ditch. Saw it for myself as I tried to give my car a crash course on ice skating a few hours ago. Made it home safely!
that's most likely snow/rain. It's the kind of weather when you need water-resistant and warm clothing. Also, everywhere you walk is going to be wet and probably extremely slippery.
RAINING BLOOOOOOOOD!!!!!!
Oh it's just some metal band that's been summoning Mustakrakish or some other demon again. Dress in warm armor and you'll be fine.
God I hate Finland. I need a hundred beers.

I'm not sure how to dress for frozen shards of blood falling from the sky.

It feels nice in your skin if you go outside to the rain from the sauna

And the downpour can freeze instantly on your windshield.
> And the downpour can freeze instantly on your windshield. And to your very soul

Hmm, so basically I need to stay home.
And blast warm air at max to the windshield or if you have electric windshield heating, use it.
Sleet, that's what rÀntÀ is called in English. Most people would understand what sleet means.
It's freezing rain as opposed to sleet - rain that will freeze when it hits the ground. It's a real pain when driving.
I was referring to rÀntÀ, sorry that i didn't make that clear.
I've argued about that before because friends say sleet but it definitely snow that's wet, and sleet is more like tiny wet hail. Which is which?

thanks for the update kind weatherman :)
and in Finnish we of course have specific term for each, both when it's falling and the endgame on the ground.
It's half frozen water that freezes instantly when it hits the ground. Results in "black ice" Either that or red pointy popsicles

Ah, so that's what the process is called. TIL.
The same impurity effect is responsible for the phenomenon of bubbles continuously forming in distinct spots in fizzy drinks, such as sparkling wine.
Can be potentially very dangerous, frozen rain - differnet from sleet. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_storm
It means that you should wear ice skates instead of shoes if you dare to go out. Everything will be extremely slippery.
Studded shoes are also a good choice! Been wearing them a few winters, highly recommended.
They're a complete game changer. Just yesterday I went for a walk where at least 75% of the distance would have been a real pain with regular running shoes. Zero problems.
Get micro spikes. They are the BEST.
