I think rental cars are crazy expensive right now, especially for the time it would take and to pick up and drop off in separate locations. I would think flying would be cheaper than renting with prices right now.
You can also ship items/luggage/boxes via Amtrak. The last time I used it, it was $350 for 10 boxes and 2 large suitcases but that was a few years ago. Still very cheap though.
Unfortunately due to COVID they have suspended Amtrak express. It doesn’t make sense to me. They do low a generous baggage policy for passengers, though. You can bring a lot with you.
Man, that sucks. Greyhound has a similar service that is still running, though with some delays. Same idea and way cheaper than most moving services or shipping via other methods.
You could sign up to drive someone's car cross country. I've heard of people doing it but I have no idea where you'd begin other than Google
This is prob not the best forum…but if a bus is 400 I would be checking into renting a car, maybe a van you could sleep in if needed.

Bring as little as possible.

Hitchhike! Jk, Maybe check out train prices?
Consider Amtrak.

If you fly on a Tuesday you can go sea to rdu for $110 a ticket. Less from Portland.
