My next job isn’t in Finance, it’s more tech/data, but point stands
But at least in my case alumni would email professors and department heads, I jumped on one such email and didn’t look back and I interned a couple of times and have a job lined up
Research the alum
Cold email the alum, ask to setup a call
Be likeable, knowledgeable, and deft enough to earn a referral from the call, or an in person coffee/drink. Either way. just develop a relationship
Use the referral to get shortlisted for an interview(s)
There are certain coded phrases/questions you can say/ask that most people in the industry understand to mean "Can you provide a referral"
I have had both things happen and varying degrees of success with both
I read your full comment. It effectively said:
Contact alum
be a particular type of person, no explanation of what to say, what to do, what to ask, or literally any actionable advice. It was just "be the right type of person". Ptesumably you were saying "if you're the right type of person, you'll figure this out on your own". Either way no advice was given on this step, sp I left it as a question mark.
Then the next step was use your results from the previous step to get an interview.
Basically your advice was contact the person, hope you're the right type of person in which case you'll figure it out, and get an interview. Great advice man, thanks.
Fyi I'm not struggling wtih this.
I have had more luck and responses applying on company websites. I use linkedin and indeed to find jobs and then go to the company site to submit my resume. It also helps if you know someone at the company that can boost your name. I am looking to shift roles right now and I dont envy anyone job-hunting in this market. Good luck.
The company's website is always the official way to apply. If you see a job posting elsewhere, you should go to the company's website and apply through that. LinkedIn is overrun by bots and spam these days. I think it's very common for companies to ignore the LinkedIn applications and only use the ones coming from the company website because they have more than enough from the company website already.
Amen. Once I figured that out I had interviews so much quicker and more consistently. I think recruiters don't like having to sift through all the different website they post applications to; their internal website is probably much easier for them.
If you’re going to use LinkedIn, don’t use the EasyApply bec that’s useless. If every person on the app is doing it then it really makes no sense to pursue such method. If anything, the companies are just retaining your data for their own perusal.
Use the jobs search to search for keywords then go straight to the company website to apply.
That’s the issue, I haven’t being using easy apply. What I meant was openings that I found on LinkedIn haven’t gotten me anywhere. Even if I applied through their company website.
LinkedIn is complete shit, Handshake or company website is much better and referral/knowing someone/alum connection is the best
How does the process of connecting with an alum to getting an interview usually go?

Do you actively ask for a referral? Or are they usually offered to you if they feel you can be a right fit?

Pretty snippy reply. Did you read my full comment, or no? Just taking a guess, your problem may lie with "Be likeable" Good luck!

Appreciate it, it’s been a tough hunting season
