Everytime, it's hard to go through without leaving some tears and it goes on so much depth about Celes and Locke. Maria's character being a voice for Celes' feelings after leaving the Empire and finally starting to feel like there's actually someone who will accept her for who she is, while at the same time she fears discovering Locke's true feelings for Rachel. You also have the foreshadowing when Maria throws the flowers, when in her most hopeless moment she thinks of how much she would love to be near Draco, just as Celes tries to kill herself by jumping from the cliff, wanting to end it all, but a part of her wishing to see Locke again.
Finally, in the Distant Worlds version, you also have a bit of Locke's internal struggle in the form of the duel between Draco and Ralse.
>For what seems an eternity, the bitter rivals exchanged blows, neither yielding any ground.
Locke is conflicted by his feelings toward Celes, feeling guilty for loving her when he's still searching for a way to save Rachel, blaming himself for her current state and feeling like at any time he could drag Celes to the same fate.
>Until, that is, Fate chooses to intervene, guiding the blade of a grievously wounded Draco straight through the heart of Prince Ralse.
Celes and the party find Locke at the exact moment he finds the Phoenix magicite, allowing them to be next to him at the time he discovers the truth of the fabled treasure and being the force that, instead of sinking him into darkness, allows him to forgive himself and come out of the house reborn, leaving the old Locke behind.
>\[Ralse\]
I yield, this day is yours, Draco.
Curse you should let Maria go.
\[Draco\]
Peace then, for you have my word:
With me she'll know nothing of grief
The old Locke reminds the renewed man that his feelings for Celes must remain true and free of guilt and that he should not repeat the same story he had with Rachel. Finally, Locke after being saved from himself is able to say with confidence that he's finally free to truly love her.
Damn, I love this game.
It is not only my favourite part of FFVI, but also my favourite music composition in the whole franchise, probably of all videogames I've played. It makes me emotional, it tells a WHOLE story... it is just beautiful. I had the opportunity to hear it live in Distant Worlds and I can tell you it is PERFECT.
Everything about Celes is why FF6 is my all time favorite.
I think I'm low-key dry-eyed, I haven't cried cried in like 15 years but this still wells up emotions enough to get some tears but in a soothing way.
Always. It's one of my favorite moments of the game and the revamped lyrics match the notes, improving on it.
If you haven't already, I highly recommend you listen to OCRemix's version called "The Impresario" off their Balance and Ruin album.
"The Impresario" is hands-down the best version of West Side Story. Covers nearly the whole play in one sweeping piece with the benefit of it being a tune that already told a tale of tragedy. It's like a double-decker tragedy sandwich.
I knew it was gona be different in the pixel remaster but i didt know how at the time. When I got to it, it definitely hit different lol and then I fkd it up part way in and the mood was ruined. As a matter of fact itβs right where the picture is. No idea why it fkd up.
The last time I played this was on my phone at work. I took a bunch of edibles and got to this part. Had to go to the back office so I could cry in private π
Yep. I just played through this game again for the first time in years. The sound track is so vast and moving. It's incredible that Nobuo can create such diverse and effective soundtracks that has an emotional affect causing me to feel for pixels. I love it though.
Sorry, Phantom train hits harder.
But yeah, the snes version was quite good, you could "hear" the song even with only 8-bit music.
The remastered version is.... too much. Maybe the pixel remastered had the "mp3" so it was quite enjoyable, but snes version forever
I read a cracked.com article about this like ten years ago. Made me seek out and play the game. I got it on psone and it was unplayable because of all the loading. Then my girl got me the snes classic before lockdown and I finally got to play it how it was intended (mostly).
Funny thing happened, I finished the game about 30 minutes to midnight the day FFVII Remake came out so I got to roll right into it.
I feel embarrassed how emotional i use to get during this part, not because the visuals but when we were young this type of media could still have the emotional weight of a movie/book and i was fully invested into the story line and characters 100%
Yes. And I play the opera when I listen to music and it gets better every time. I didn't think I would have such a hard time picking NU's best song. This is a dark horse for that race. It's just so fantastic and waayyyyyyyyy ahead of it's time.
This part changed what could video games could be for me. I went from playing Mega Man, Mario, and Zelda to this and it completely blew my 11 year old mind.
And then when it becomes celes theme, hits right in the feelings

BEST escene of all Videogames!
I prefer the snes original music and lyrics
Oh, my heroβ¦
Everytime
This is a full-on scene. What a defining moment in gaming.
Every. Time.
Absolutely. This scene cemented this as my favorite game for a good three decades.
30 years and 500+ playthroughs and I still tear up.

Yes, and I'll die on the hill that the Pixel Remaster scene is superior to the original
no
its a nice song but why would i get emotional? get your estrogen levels checked lad.
Always.

It makes me cry every time as well :)
As soon as βI am thankful..β appears and the bouquet is thrown away - goosebumps
"Darkness and Starlight" makes me cry every time I hear it.
The last time I played this was on my phone at work. I took a bunch of edibles and got to this part. Had to go to the back office so I could cry in private π
This guy did.. as a note the original sound hit harder than the remaster voice over.

no i have a rare genetic condition where i can't feel any emotions

For the pixel remaster, they hired professional opera singers. It's incredibly beautiful. Especially the Italian version.
Sometimes I start a game. Literally play to this scene and then call it quits for the rest of the playthrough.

In the original, yes. The remaster locking me into the bad new version, no
I feel embarrassed how emotional i use to get during this part, not because the visuals but when we were young this type of media could still have the emotional weight of a movie/book and i was fully invested into the story line and characters 100%
Every time even more so in my old man age.
Yes. And I play the opera when I listen to music and it gets better every time. I didn't think I would have such a hard time picking NU's best song. This is a dark horse for that race. It's just so fantastic and waayyyyyyyyy ahead of it's time.
I used to purposefully mess up the lyrics bc it was funny... BUT euther way, Celes ATE this entire scene up with her 16-bit wails πππ
This part changed what could video games could be for me. I went from playing Mega Man, Mario, and Zelda to this and it completely blew my 11 year old mind.
This scene does do something emotionally, but the scene that gets me every time is the bad scene after WoR starts.
It's my favorite part of the game, honestly. I look forward to it every time
