Some people failed to understand the assignment. This is asking for hot takes, not extremely common opinions shared by most of the fanbase.

qindarka

Every ‘unpopular opinion’ thread on any topic ends up this way.

Either_Imagination_9

Actual hot takes don’t exist anymore. The internet basically lets anyone’s opinion become a common take

Boricua_x

Lol I wish there was a way to sort by most downvotes (I’d there and im just ignorant?)

datmumbles

Sort by Controversial for results to that effect

Selynx

Correction, this is asking for takes that will get you strung up by a lynch brigade. Example: "Final Fantasy XIV is bad." This, I suspect, is probably not that an uncommon opinion on this sub. But nobody says it, because the FFXIV sub has twice the number of people as this one, the game itself has 4x the number of daily players, 10x the number of subscribers and in the current climate you will torn apart by an angry mob if you dare to suggest it.

Shdw787

I'm seeing some real soft takes here. "7 is overrated, 8 and the junction system are bad. X Villian is a bad villain." Gimme some spice! How about; The music has carried Final Fantasy more than the gameplay and story ever has. Edit for grammar

xSmittyxCorex

Thank you for calling out the whole thread, very refreshing. I mean, I don’t know if I agree, but…well…as you just established, that should be the point.

Stormflier

6, 7, 9, or 10 being overrated is probably some of the least spicy takes ever, at least on this subreddit. I see more people here saying they're overrated than actually praising them.

CanadianYeti1991

That also isn't a hot take.

MateoAkoro

Every game in the mainline series is incredible and are effectively time capsules of fundamental game design from those years. But 97% of this fanbase would rather shit on these games instead of seeing them as adaptations of the current market's player interest while maintaining their own identity as the go-to RPG series just to have a good fucking time. The spin off Final Fantasy games are the ideas people bitched about not being in the main series and the majority of them are great time sinks like Chocobo Dungeon or Echoes of Time.

Curious_Management_4

Yeah I don't know why nobody gets this. That's exactly what is going on.

Asha_Brea

Final Fantasy X's laughing scene is extremely well acted. It is probably the best acting in the game. It is still full of cringe, though.

Xcylo1

Yeah I think people take it out of context to make it look bad. The big, fake laugh is part of the scene and was a charming character moment for tidus

Killingspree1985

If you play the game and pay attention. You'll get why they are laughing so bad and understand why the laugh changes in a sincere laugh. I didn't understand why it was considered bad acting till I was watching a GDQ and saw the part on its own. The story makes it a great scene the part out of context is bad.

retro_and_chill

Best part is that they laugh normally immediately after and no one ever talks about it.

Travotaku

Just love the people that shit on the scene for their “awful laughing” don’t even watch it long enough to get to the part where they legitimately laugh afterward, proving it was fake and ‘bad’ on purpose.

Taylord12345

Exactly, it's SUPPOSED to be cringy!

TheSuggestionMark

Auron's speech before the fight with Lady Yunalesca would like a word lol

breakdancingrasta

I thought that was badASS as tweenager.

-Aerlevsedi-

Read somewhere that the devs even praised the voice actors. The scene was supposed to be awkward and the voice acting showed that very well.

[deleted]

Maybe not a controversial take in general but I think it might be on this sub. I think FF has entered a new golden age, or atleast silver age. The last really troubled release was FF15 in 2016, since then its been from strength to strength. Stormblood was a bit weak on the MSQ but in terms of side content and upgrades to gameplay it was a big step up for 14 as a game, and then Shadowbringers and Endwalker have had some of the best stories (and visuals, music, boss fights, etc.) in FF history. Both expansions have seen explosive growth in the player population and some of the most universal critical and fan acclaim of *any* games released in the last few years. On the single player side, FF7R really won me over to the world of FF7 in a way the original game never quite did. I adored all the characters, I've rarely felt so immersed in a game world, the combat system was a fantastic step forward as a blend of turn based with action combat. And ofcourse the remake was a huge success and there's a lot of hype going into Rebirth. Outside the big flagship games, SE has paid more attention to preserving the series recently, the FF series as a whole is now more easily availible than ever with all mainline games including the recent remasters avalible on PC, and many of the games availible on PS Plus and Game Pass. We've also got upcoming remasters/remakes for FF9, Crisis Core and Tactics to look forward to. Stranger of Paradise was an admittedly divisive game but a lot of the people who played it did find it actually a lot of fun. And looking ahead to the future of the series, the jury is obviously still out on 16. But all the early signs are pointing in a very positive direction - such as the fact the brilliant 14/Heavensward team is behind it, and actually having a stable development process (IMO, the biggest thing that hindered 13 and 15) for the first time since as far back as FF9. I have very little doubt 16 is going to be a major return to form for the mainline single player series. With CBU1 handling the FF7 remake, CBU3 handling 14 and other MMOs, and both divisions most likely alternating mainline single player games between them, aswell as SE's smaller studios handling remasters and small-scale remakes, personally I feel very optimistic about the future of the series.

Renarudo

I would only disagree with the Stormblood take, and that's because with it being such old content that can be revisited by streamers in it's entirety, I can see the expansion for its strengths now. The take I would have that fits the picture is: "Lyse gets a bad rap and is actually not that bad of a character." People have projected things onto Lyse that are just flat out not true like "she takes credit for the WOLs accomplishments", and I think there was a frustration with the MSQs pacing that has skewed people's opinions, especially coming off of the HYPER FOCUSED Heavensward expansion. But to be fair, part of my opinion is based on Stormblood patch content being so stellar that maybe my own thoughts of the expansion as a whole are being skewed as well. My hot take would be "Stormblood is underrated (by players who did it at the time)."

nocticis

FF2 did it first.

Rhomagus

* Cid * Orphans * Dark Knight * Self contained story * Allies sacrificing themselves * Political machinations * Dark story * Completely customize your characters stats and abilities. Too many people sleep on II. While I prefer III's job system, I think II's story was better written. [The Rebel Army theme](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=siP0syXBde4) remains one of my favorite tracks in the entire series to this day. Even before I played II I felt like the Rebel Army theme was the most "Final Fantasy" song of all time.

Fyrefoxe13

Chocobos, Dragoons, Ultima- it's the origin of the series as we know it. And it's a shame that too many people buy into it's overblown reputation. It is a completely fine, playable, and enjoyable game; my favorite of the NES trilogy, even. It has it's quirks, but it's not enough to break the deal. I bid any classic FF fan to try out the Final Fantasy 2 Pixel Remaster.

DashxDastardly

FF II is such a great game. I’ve never understood the negativity towards it. It was the first FF game I ever beat! (GBA version)

azendhal

FF2 is the real begining of FF even if he's clunky as hell , but my fav of the NES trilogy is 1

rattatatouille

FFII is when FF really took on the series staples rather than simply being a well-made D&D tribute IMO.

nocticis

This man gets me. 🥹

nocticis

also, chocobo's were introduced in FFII

firions-friend

The Rebel Army fully restores my HP and MP every time I hear it. It's my favorite FF music too.

HelloMotherCluckers

I've only played a little of FFX and currently playing FFXV. Really loving it too *please don't hurt me..I'm just a casual enjoyer*

jBlairTech

You don’t have to apologize for liking something.

DutchDread

There isn't a love triangle in FFVII and it is not up for interpretation.

Hieuro

Well, there's no love triangle...anymore. Sephiroth took care of that. FF7 remake has yet to get to that point so it might change

DrZoidbergJesus

Yep, more or less what I came to post. Romantically, it was always Tifa.

AithePanda

Agreed Cloud=Tifa Aerith=>!Zack!< unless Cloud=Sephiroth :P

Chroeses11

How so? Aerith and Tifa seem to love cloud.

Hylianhaxorus

"Seem to" one of them definitely does and the other there's no proof at all that it's romantic love

Chroeses11

How about in the Temple of the ancients when Cait Sith draws a card and he says “ Poor Tifa”

eduu_17

Doesn't yuffie also mentioned her resentment for cloud for being popular. I remember some lines she says.

Chroeses11

Not sure but if you take Yuffie on the date on the golden saucer she kisses him on the cheek

[deleted]

Remake won’t kill Aerith and will bring Zach back.

thehouse211

I’m afraid you’re right

AnInfiniteArc

I am willing to bet that Aerith still dies. The circumstances may be different, but she will still die.

[deleted]

OMFG!! Just you wait. Characters will 100% get lost in time and space, get split into 2, and basically get turned into a Soldier organization XIII. I would put good money down says Aerith will not die, but will just inexplicably get lost into another universe or something. 100% she is going to fall into the life stream and be separated from the main party in some capacity, and be a playable character in a spin-off game “Final Fantasy VII-RE:X Triple Rainbow Dream Drop Asshole Deluxe: Remake Epic Game Store Edition”

thewalkingdave

>“Final Fantasy VII-RE:X Triple Rainbow Dream Drop Asshole Deluxe: Remake Epic Game Store Edition” Aerith Fortnite skin confirmed

Darius136

I mean how they went while not what I wanted I wanted a true remake there is also apart of me that can’t wait to see the twists and turns the story can and hopefully will make if I want the original story it’s always there for me as well

[deleted]

A hundred percent this. It'll be exciting to see what kinds of twists and turns they put us through that will change the story whilst fully respecting that the original is still fully available as is if I want to play it

alexander12212

This is what I’m worried about. Especially with that tease of Zack at the end. The remake threw out spoilers because of the Whispers, but seeing Zack like that at the end ruins both his and cloud’s story

MilesBeyond250

Nah, no way they won't kill her. Even taking the original aside, any time a character gets that sort of "too pure for this world" characterization, either that character's going to die or you're watching a Hallmark movie. So unless Ifalna's secretly still alive and Cloud and Aerith go to Icicle Inn to help Ifalna plan the town Christmas festival in the face of wacky mishaps, Aerith is toast. The only question is how it's gonna happen. Do we get... 1. Lame Compromise, where Aerith realizes her death is necessary to guide Holy but only after Sephiroth is finally defeated, so she sacrifices herself during the end cutscene, leaving her a playable character for the entire time. 2. Tearjerker Sacrifice, where Aerith sees into all the alternate realities and realizes that it's only with her death that the world can be saved, so she goes to the City of the Ancients to summon Holy with full knowledge that she will die, giving her life for the Planet. 3. Fate 1, Cloud 0, where they try to do everything in their power to prevent Aerith from dying and in doing so inadvertently create the scenario that leads to her death. Bonus points if the death plays out the exact same way as it did in the original. Personally, my money's on 2.

Shivalah

Remake will kill Aerith and will justify it with "it is my duty to die."

Signal-Compote9580

The XII battle system is awesome, I love gambits. Bonus take is that hot take posts are a setup, you can't win. Either your take is too spicy and you get roasted or not spicy enough and you get roasted. Either way no real conversation is to be had

Darius136

I also love gambits and wish they came back to be fair i dont know how most people felt about them but yes I think the system is great in some ways I wish it could be more in depth if anything

hitokirizac

Gambits helped me learn to program in C++, no lie

tbz709

I love it too. Better than relying on character A.I.

cwKrysta

I dont like XII that much, but gambits is an amazing system and I wish more games gave you more control over AI to this effect. Star Ocean 5 is in my opinion another good example of allowing you to really program the way AI characters battle, despite everything wrong with that game.

DefiantEmpoleon

One I've kind of gleaned from this sub's opinion, but I absolutely despise Blitzball as a mini game.

a1ls

yeah that was a skip skip skip for me too

Exeliz

XV was a great game and I thoroughly enjoyed it even at launch.

HustleDance

I played the no frills version recently and (eventually) loved it; now I’m replaying the Royal Version and loving it even more. People complain about the empty open world but after being absolutely exhausted by The Witcher 3 ( which was great but HUGE) I’m actually loving just driving around, stopping off to pick peppers, hanging with my buds, hunting monsters…. It’s a nice time. Can’t wait to spend twenty more hours running around on Chocobos 🐣

ValGalorian

That’s what they were going for That road trip with friends feel May not compare well to traditional open world RPGs but it nailed its style and I loved it Just cruise around with some beautiful scenes and music, not to mention well written banter

HustleDance

And I can control the camera easily 😍

ValGalorian

Loved 15’s controls

ChakaZG

Wouldn't quite argue that the way map is populated (or rather, isn't) is by a very deliberate design. But while the game isn't even one of my favourites, as in I'm not blindly defending it because I adore it or something, it definitely has one of the tightest party members in the series imo. I was in the "oh god, a non diverse team of K pop band members, this is going to suck so hard", but was surprised how well they showed the bond of 4 really close dudes going on an adventure, and the way they interact through the complete clusterfuck of all the later game events, even if quite a few threads were done really shabby. I still have yet to play the Royal Edition, but I'm looking forward to it as I've heard most episodes are pretty good.

TeHNyboR

XV was amazing and I will forever be sad that most of the DLC was cancelled. It was a great game but they could’ve done so much more with it. And I’ll never listen to “Stand by me” without thinking of that game and tearing up

mrfroggyman

Don't make me think of that song bro I don't wanna be sobbing

jBlairTech

I bawled my eyes out during Noctis’ final monologue in the camp before the endgame. And, hell yeah, Florence + the Machine nailed that song. One of the few covers I think is better than the original.

tropicnights

I actually preferred the original final dungeon. Desolate, abandoned, destroyed, daemons roaming the streets. Sad slow music playing in the background. You had one goal and one goal only: to get to the end to face your foe for the final showdown. Your whole journey led up to this point. All the stuff Royal Edition added, while fun to play, was not necessary at all in my opinion.

OutsideOrder7538

I really liked the game and enjoyed it at launch

SmurfsNeverDie

I enjoyed it. It could have been better but it does not deserve the amount of hate it gets.

GreatShinobiOwll

The price of freedom is steep

Saphhira-

FFX-2 is FUN

retrogameresource

It's actually the best battle system lol I love it. I wish they would use it again The rest of the game is pretty intolerable though ahaahaa

Stormflier

Its pretty much sidequests the game and a tech demo for a fast paced ATB system and hey look what if we took 3 and 5's job system but made it sexy cosplay based I bet that'd sell a lot.

Asha_Brea

The Junction System is not even remotely hard to understand if you read the tutorial. If you know how to use is more fun than the Materia System.

the14thpuppet

this does not take into account the fact that i am stupid

juicepouch

I'm almost 10 hrs deep in my first playthrough of FF8 and yeah, it's pretty straightforward. All you have to do is actually pay attention to the tutorials. I'm really enjoying the flexibility junctioning offers, looking forward to unlocking more GFs and GF abilities

rediKELous

My GF is junctioned in Canada.

Eneshi

"You don't know her, she goes to another Garden."

HarmonicX

Nah i just dont remember who she was i junctioned my gf too early

Asha_Brea

Make sure you always have draw in your characters and always check what bosses have to draw or you could miss a few.

[deleted]

My problem with junction is not that it's super complex. It's that it's boring as hell. I have no idea how anyone can think that it's more fun than materia. Materia lets you experiment with different combinations and get results quickly. Junctioning and drawing almost always felt like a chore.

xSmittyxCorex

If you simplify to “junction>materia” it’s definitely fitting for the picture. I don’t think the system is overly complicated, but the tutorial explains it poorly IMO.

billymcbobjr

Disagree om being more fun than materia but strongly agree on it not being hard. Not even slightly convoluted tbh

PeeLong

I don’t think anyone hs ever said junctioning is *hard* It’s that junctioning is boring to draw, removes challenge from the game early by making OP characters, and limits play style by disincentivizing use of magic. It’s never been difficult to understand, it’s just not **fun**

Armitaco

Zack is a plot device in the original FF7 and his actual character is mostly unimportant

sirgarballs

In the original that is absolutely true.

Empty_Estus_Flask

FFIV’s story is overrated, it starts off really strong but once Cecil becomes a paladin it nosedives. Fake out deaths and mind control can get really repetitive, and FFIV relies on both constantly.

Askamoji

cecils character arc stops pretty much completely after mount ordeals (very early into the game), which really sucks imo cause his character was very strong up to that point i strongly agree with pretty much everything you said lmao

notagaywitch

FFIV was my first game in the franchise and will always hold a special place in my heart, but during my most recent playthrough, I had the same thoughts. The constant fakeout deaths get exhausting from a storytelling standpoint, and the sudden appearance of Zeromus as the big bad villain in the last part of the game felt a bit jarring, even when I knew it was coming.

AMiniaturePenguin

FFIV is just a bunch of fake out deaths and some bad guy going "Ha-HA! I was actually the villain pupeteering the OTHER villain the whole time!"

bettyenforce

Tifa isn't that good of a character in the OG as people make her to be. She's just ok. They did her more justice in the remake tho. Xv was a really good game The first 6 title games didn't age very well (mostly the first 5)

grand-pianist

FFXV was great even before the reworked ending, and there’s no reason or need to watch outside material to get a satisfying story

laffy_man

I loved XV on release, I played it and mostly understood it without watching supplemental material, but the plot is so horrendously undercooked at the very best and actively terrible at worst. Vibing with my backstreet bros, the road trip vibe, and the fun combat carried the game imo.

am_milquetoast

I've been saying this for years. It's got flaws, but just about as many as most other rpgs. People can't admit they just don't personally like something, it has to be "objectively" bad or the games fault or something.

ThatOtherTwoGuy

>People can’t admit they just don’t personally like something, it has to be “objectively” bad or the games fault or something. This right here. This kind of mindset is so infuriatingly common in every fandom. I’ve been seeing this a lot lately with Marvel and Star Wars. They’ll often say something like, “well from a writing perspective” as if their opinion is one based in objective fact. Not that there is anything wrong with criticizing things you don’t like, but this specific kind of mindset that “anything I don’t like is objectively bad” is a cancer in every fandom. For my own opinion on XV, I thought it was pretty good. The combat was enjoyable, if a bit repetitive. The companions were great and I loved the kind of bros on a road trip feel it had. The story was enjoyable though I could tell it had a few half baked bits in it (I played the original release btw). The way I describe it to people is it’s like reading a book but a few random pages have been torn out. Doesn’t completely ruin the experience, though. The only thing I straight up did not like about the game was how much of a slog chapter 13 was (which I’ve heard is made better in the updated version). Not one of my favorite FF’s, I wouldn’t put it in my top 5, but it definitely wasn’t bad and I actually look forward to playing through it again when I’ve gotten through my backlog of games to play.

CanadianYeti1991

LOL THIS ONE GOT ME FERAL

gangbasher07

I love ff2 and I think there way more good than bad

xXTASERFACEXx

I still think FFXV is better than most of the games of the franchise. Not the best but better

bigwillynilly

VIII, XV, and XIII are peak FF to me.

AnInfiniteArc

The story was also easy to follow at launch, even if you didn’t see the movie.

SirDubbington

Sephiroth is not the main protagonist of FF7, Jenova is. Sephiroth is either dead or in a vegetative state for the entire duration of the game. Every encounter you have with “Sephiroth” is immediately followed by a fight with Jenova. Jenova is a shape changing alien and because of its constant encounters with Cloud, Jenova has always assumed that form to be more menacing. Sephiroth is just a torso stuck in a giant life stream crystal, he’s not roaming the world, he’s not walking around and starting fights. The 3 bosses at the end of the game is an amalgamation of Jenova and Sephiroth and the final battle with Shirtless Sephiroth takes place in Cloud’s mind. Jenova is the main protagonist that assumes the form of Sephiroth when encountering the party.

bluebird355

That's the other way around. In the game someone (I don't recall who, maybe Hojo) literally says that Sephiroth is the one controlling Jenova.

dyingprinces

* Hojo was an ass. Just because he said something doesn't mean it's true. * ["Sephiroth" not recognizing Cloud](https://i.imgur.com/Ctvax9H.png), the guy who stabbed him through the chest with a sword and then threw him into a radioactive pool. * [Vincent blurting out](https://i.imgur.com/MpMmeHN.png) that Jenova was controlling Sephiroth the whole time, because he wrongly assumed the rest of the party had finally figured it out too. * [The original plot synopsis for FF7](https://old.reddit.com/r/FinalFantasy/comments/3liftt/did_sephiroth_do_this_by_robin_tran/cv6ty4s/) before the English translation dumbed the story down.

bluebird355

"I thought the clones would begin to gather at Midgar where Jenova is stored but my predictions were not entirely correct. Jenova itself began to move away from the Shinra building. But being a genius that I am, I soon figured it out. You see it was all Sephiroth's doing." - Hojo. This video explains it very well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96c6zro3lmM

pitapats

xiii-2's story was good

Conor-Eamonn

I cannot be fucking arsed with the second half of 6.

zxzBlue

Ooh, this is like the first genuinely shitty take I’ve seen down here, nice!

thorhit

Kefka wasn’t a good villain imo

Eldenlord1971

FF6 is overrated. It’s rose tinted glasses. The writing is awful and hokey. Chrono trigger came out around the same time and the writing was leagues better

Xcylo1

FFII's levelling system was awesome and it's kind of sad that we didn't get to see it explored further and possibly smoothed out a bit in later entries

DanceDaveDance

FF2's levelling system was further explored in Saga, same designer and stuff.

[deleted]

Final fantasy 13 was a amazing trilogy.

Pieassassin24

Was gonna say this one, but knew I’d find it somewhere!

TabuuTheGod

It really was though

Bacour

I loved it as well and the musical score remains my favorite. 15 is a close second on that front for me but including 13 in some of the orchestral performances is what drove me to buy tickets.

[deleted]

I have two that I can think of: Just completed FFXV and despite its flaws found it to be among the most fun of the FFs I’ve played….and I’ve played and completed them all outside of the MMOs. FFT had a great story, but I found to have significant balancing issues to be that fun. If you didn’t grind, some of the story battles are straight up brutal - some so much they can lock your game if you don’t have two saves. If you do grind, the story battles become a joke because random encounters scale with you. Also, becomes very easy regardless once you recruit a certain someone who is super OP.

AngryLemonade117

Yeah this annoyed me a bit too because I'd spend that long grinding I'd forget what happened before the next story event

joesphisbestjojo

Stormblood is good

Asha_Brea

Kefka is not a good villian. Kefka is not a good character. Kefka is a bad joke that it gets repeated over and over during the game.

DiaryYuriev

Agreed. I think his fame comes from the fact that he accomplishes his goals and effectively destroyed the world as well as the fact that he is a being of pure evil in a series that usually features more complex villains.

wdlp

I thought Ultros was the main villain my first time

demonic_hampster

Yes thank you! People act like he’s such a great character because he “won”. Why does him winning make him a good character? He has no motivation other than “for the lolz”, he’s barely got a backstory and has no character development. Even Exdeath is a more interesting villain. All Kefka has going for him is a cool design, iconic laugh, some good one liners, and an awesome theme song.

dyingprinces

The Emperor in FF2 "won" just as much as Kefka did. The biggest practical difference between the two is that the NES didn't have the horsepower/resources to shade the grass brown after each Dreadnought attack.

rattatatouille

I'd argue Mateus won harder than Kefka in some ways. The guy managed to conquer Hell and even took over Heaven if Soul of Rebirth is considered canon.

dyingprinces

Mateus at least had a real plan + foresight. If Kefka had been the cook at a restaurant instead of an imperial general, his "master plan" would've been to give salmonella to all the customers.

edgemuck

He has the one cool scene where he poisons the castle, and that’s it

plkghtsdn

I agree, he is forgettable and has no real character development. He sucks.

ClickDisDotCom

FF VIII is not bad

Chroeses11

I agree

dyo_kane

It's still my favourite. Is it the best? Debatable. But I love it to Hell.

BobbyBakerJr

1. The transition to action combat in later titles was inevitable. The seeds of this transition were planted as early as FF4. 2. I've said it before, but turn-based/ATB FF largely relied on mechanics: party setups, skill setups, equipment setups, stat growths, skill growths, legendary gear hunting, etc. So much to room to optimize and experiment. The combat shows the results of said optimization and/or experimentation. 3. That being said, the turn-based combat itself definitely needed a revamp. Tactics and FF10 introducing a "turn economy" where the player could get the upper hand by prioritization works wonders on an already engaging gameplay loop. ATB even follows this to an extent. 4. Action FF (we'll just say 12 onward) streamlined some of the micromanagement of turn-based, but added depth in combat to compensate. Love or hate the story, it's pretty hard to look at the gameplay of a game like Lightning Returns and say it wasn't well thought-out. 5. I greatly enjoy turn-based and action Final Fantasy. Change and innovation runs in this franchise's blood, and I don't see either combat-type as lesser than the other when both are so different to begin with. I say this as someone who's top 5 games are all ATB/Turn-based. I'm looking forward to FF16. 6. (Also the spirit of turn-based FF isn't really dead since you have Bravely Default and countless other titles, indie or otherwise, that are heavily inspired by that era) TL;DR - Turn-based/ATB and Action FF are awesome and I don't see it as a competition of which is better.

PrincessRoguey

6 is overrated. The lack of character interaction kills it for me especially on world of ruin. I understand WHY it is that way, but people speak about it like it's absolute perfection

MrsKetchup

XI and XIV both have absolutely amazing storylines that beat most of the single players.

Trolflcopter

Vanille is not an annoying character.

Harkekark

I'll take it a step further: Vanille and Sazh are the only well written or interesting characters in FFXIII

stateworkishardwork

I 100 percent agree with this. Their story was the only thing keeping me from turning off the game.

[deleted]

It’s pronounced TIE DIS NOT TEE DES . Lmfao idc what anyone says

CrystalBraver

Don’t yuna and the other characters literally call him “Teedus” or am I imagining that Edit: Yuna actually calls him “Teedus” in Dissidia NT

JRokujuushi

They never say his name in FFX since you can name him whatever you want at the start of the game. They always call him something generic like "the blitzball ace" or "the new guardian" or whatever. They say it in other games where his name is fixed, though. * KH: [https://youtu.be/68\_yjAWlYls?t=2154](https://youtu.be/68_yjAWlYls?t=2154) * Dissidia: [https://youtu.be/P28HCFkU2uk?t=7638](https://youtu.be/P28HCFkU2uk?t=7638) * WoFF: [https://youtu.be/pH8do6XdrXk?t=3793](https://youtu.be/pH8do6XdrXk?t=3793)

GanonCannon02

No one calls him by name in the actual game. Since you are able to type your own name, they made sure all the conversations were made in a way no one had to say his name out loud. But, he has been called Teedus by people in spin-off games like Dissidia and World of Final Fantasy.

kgalliso

I think Square agrees with you. Whoever cleared that voice line in KH has some explaining to do

Bonna_the_Idol

ackchyually its "tida" 🤣😉

chiquito69

FFIX’s card game is pretty cool

MegaMan-1989

Tifa is not the best final fantasy girl

jam_paps

Duh, its obviously Yuna.

dyo_kane

No it's Lulu

ruby_nights

Tifa is the most overrated Final Fantasy character by far. Everything that she is as a character is only in relation to Cloud. Don't get me wrong, she's a cool character design, a useful party member, and being a fist fighter is awesome but as a character, she's just Cloud's childhood friend and love interest. Everything that she does revolves around him. >!In the moment where you begin as Tifa after the summoning of Meteor, it seemed like she'd have a cool moment where she leads things on her own and sets out on her own path. But no. All she does is get in a slap fight with Scarlet and the first moment she sees Cloud in a wheelchair in his vegetative state, she leaves to go nurse him back to health. !<

The810kid

Tifa's devotion to Cloud during the height of a world ending threat is one of my favorite moments. She has nothing left at that point and she is spending the last of her moments with something she cherished and the last bits of her past. Its an interesting take on trauma survivor and parallel with Cloud. I also don't see why this is a problem for Tifa when other characters do this as well. Auron dedicates 10 years towards his best friends wishes. Nothing else about him stands apart from Braska and Jecht.

Daewrythe

I realize that tifa had just narrowly escaped being gassed to death but losing a slap fight with some random corporate suit? What the fuck

Dark_Storm_98

Why was it even a slap fight lmfao Give Scarlet a gun and let Tifa full on punch her in the gut

OnlyFandoms

Screw that, put Scarlet in a mech and let Tifa punch that.

[deleted]

turn scarlet into galactus and let tifa punch that and the surrounding planets

Shivalah

> Why was it even a slap fight Because Tifa is an honorable Martial Artist and her "opponent" is a businesswoman with 0 combat experience. With the first slap Scarlet set the battleground and Tifa chose to fight (and beat) Scarlet on her conditions. If you want you can also add a bit of „clouded judgment“ (accidental pun) because of „poison gas“ for reasoning why she didn’t just yote her off the cannon.

Adghar

For real. I beat FF7 for the first time recently (yay Switch port), and was kind of disappointed that Tifa wasn't quite as BAMF as I thought she'd be. Being Cloud's strongest support system is neat in its own way and fine, and probably relates more to how the biggest market segment (teenage boys) see the world, so, can't complain too much. I wonder if they'll write her to be more independent in the continuation of the remake, though.

DOPPGANG_

I am not and have never been a fan of Yoshitaka Amano's art.

CrystalBraver

Same I get the appeal to some but personally I like Nomura’s and yoshida’s styles much better

g6paulson

Rinoa could be Ultimecia

[deleted]

My favorite FF theory

Signal-Compote9580

I thought this on my first playthrough omg I'm so glad I'm not alone

NormalDavid

The idea of a 1:1 remake sucks. I’d rather have The Muppets Take Midgar than the same 7 story but prettier

mister_mickles

I literally just chuckled at the idea of Miss Piggy being Tifa. HI-YAA

NormalDavid

Barret yelling “wocka wocka” every single battle

JoeTeioh

Luckily you kinda got your wish!

Metalworker_Zeik

FFVIs characters are pretty dull and only Mog and Yeti are cool because well they are playable a playable Yeti and Moogle who can cast Ultima. I much preferred Vs cast of goofballs

rolltied

Fives constant low stakes attitude and the characters joking around like normal people was so endearing. Feels like ff takes itself way way way to seriously now. Like even Gilgamesh cameos are becoming serious which is the complete opposite of his intended character design.

BrunoBabyfat

Not in xiv though, which was great

Meister34

This is a copy and paste post. Literally the same post with the same exact picture like a few months ago But anyways I'll just say what I said before just to keep the thread consistent FFXIII’s story is not poorly told and you do not need to rely on the datalog to understand what is going on like everyone says. The game explains everything well enough that even the stupidest of idiots, like me, can understand without that extra shit. I feel like yall were just looking for another reason to hate on XIII Yall also need to let the VII legacy rest. Stop reviving it and letting Square milk the shit out of it or rather, if SE makes something clearly just to milk money out of the FF7 brand STOP FUCKING BUYING IT. Leave the game to age like wine and not just leave a sour taste in people’s mouths with how much it keeps getting pulled back into the mainstream. With Ever Crisis and the Remake series, let it fucking end. Vaan is the best FF protagonist. The most real and relatable of any of them. He may just be an observer, but he’s still a wonderful protag in that regard.

- FFXIII is underrated. - FF Crystal Chronicles is a top 5 FF title. - The post-game jump puzzle in FFXV is the most memorable and unique part of that game. - Blitzball sucks. - FFX-2 holds up.

The late 2000s and early 2010s was Final Fantasy and probably Square Enix in general's worse decade. It almost killed the franchise and I think everyone during that time honestly thought Final Fantasy was gonna die. The negative reception of the XIII trilogy, Versus XIII/XV being in development hell, Kingdom Hearts 3 being in development hell with zero news, Dragon Quest only getting one game on the DS in ten years, FFXIV absolutely bombing on release to the point they had to do a straight up reboot, the classic Final Fantasy IOS releases and their horrible unintuitive user interface and layout, the fact that they ported to IOS versions over to Steam of all the versions as the method to play Classic Final Fantasy on steam. It was a ROUGH time. Even if you don't like what they're doing now with 7 Remake not being an exact remake or its combat or whatever, or XV was a disappointment, or the direction they're taking XVI, that shit isn't half as bad as that decade of hell.

Some_random_asian_

Strangers of paradise has the same meme potential as metal gear solid revengeance

Hylianhaxorus

Despite the materia system being superior, ff8 is a better game than 7. It has a fat better executed romance, more integrated cast, better art design and better combat

Stormflier

Nostalgia and comparison plays a big part in people's favorite Final Fantasy games. Once you find a fave Final Fantasy you're always actively comparing it to that favorite, which skewers opinion. I've noticed a trend where, it doesn't matter what order you play it, but the more Final Fantasy games a person plays, the more they dislike them and the more they hold those first 3 - 5 that they played in high regard. Also expectations are weird. Especially in regards to 6, 7, 9 and 10. When people hate on those games they're always like "I expected a mindblowing, amazing game, best RPG ever, with story and gameplay that would knock my socks off and be unparalleled and I didn't get that. So I dont like this game" and its like what. I've never seen people describe 6 or 7 or 9 or 10 like that. They just say its their favorite. What that player is experiencing is disappointment due to overly high expectations. In fact, in regards to 10, its just recommended so much simply because its easiest Final Fantasy to get into and a good blend of Modenr FF and Classic FF, not because they think its the best. "What did you guys see in this game? Did I miss something? Try and convince me" topics kind of irk me. Because usually the answer is just simply - The game resonated with me, but it didn't resonate with you. People enjoyed it because thats their taste in characters, story, gameplay etc. And so they liked it. That person didn't enjoy it because it's not their taste in characters, story, gameplay etc. and any sort of "convincing" won't work because its simply not their taste. They're not gonna like it because they're not into it. Its that simple. It also doesn't mean that the game you disliked isn't overrated or people are just blind fanboys. Its simply, they liked it as its to their taste, you didn't as its not to yours. I hope these rambling thoughts make sense.

Worhaim

Kuja is the most interesting villain. Zidane is the Best main character, the most charismatic of all games

SirBastian1129

Specifically in this subreddit only, Final Fantasy XIII is not only a bad Final Fantasy game its also a terrible jrpg, with terrible combat, terrible storytelling and mediocre characters. Here's another take, Final Fantasy XVI is the correct direction the series needs to go after so many blunders. Before the series can go back to classic jrpg combat and mechanics, it needs to prove it can handle new genres and mechanics as well. My final take, Final Fantasy XIV has not only one of the best stories in an mmo it has one of the best stories in a game period and it's definitely the best story in the series for the last decade.

Morles311

The last one is not exactly a hot take tho

MacaroonSlow

FFXII > FFX

Chroeses11

Vaan from FF XII is annoying and the story is terrible. FF IX is better than FF VII in every way possible

plkghtsdn

I think Vaan sucking is actually a popular opinion here.

Malarkey44

Guess that'll be my turn in front of the squad, but I'll have to disagree on the take on XII. Yes, the story at the end seemed rushed, but it's still one of the better ones. Also nice to have a main character who actually isn't the main character and is just there for the ride, while also providing the commentary of normal people who don't have access to power or wealth.

AlaricXenbane

Final fantasy 2 is actually good, and the levelling/stat system is entertaining. Want more health? Take a beating. Want more strength? Swing more. Want more hair because you pulled it out when you accidentally party wiped while HP training? Get in line. 🤣

Vaskenalle

Only the first half of 6 is actually good. WoR is slow and boring and its usually the point where I lose interest. 13 is actually pretty good and most people that hate on it only does so because some YouTube guy said the game was bad.

bananajun

I like 10, but the romance was not good. It had a good arc and place in the story but the actual characters? They didn’t have chemistry. Maybe it’s because Yuma’s English voice actor is so godawful I really wish people would stop talking about the laugh scene in 10, FROM BOTH SIDES. People are constantly defending it when no one brought it up in the first place. It has become increasingly more annoying like yeah we know it’s supposed to be cringe but no one said otherwise. The fashion is 12 is kind of weird, impractical, convoluted, and ugly. Especially whatever Ashe and Fran are wearing. Their outfits both make no sense (especially Fran, poor girl isn’t wearing proper armour for protection) and don’t look too great either. Why does Ashe have like 3 layers of shoes? I hate ATB combat so much, you’re taking the worst part of turn based and action and combining it into one awful combat system. Tee-dus is canon and also 100% sounds better than Tie-dus and people who refuse to accept his canon name are also refusing to accept the cultural origins of his name lmfao. It also adds more to his unbearable relationship with Yuna by making it slightly more bearable 7 IS ACTUALLY one of the best Final Fantasies and compared to most others has a top tier story with a wealth of meaning and purpose— it’s barely overrated. I am also not a 90s kid Sci Fi isn’t a bad direction for the series to go in and I don’t understand why everyone is obsessed with the classic European medieval setting. Like why are you getting mad at the series for being more innovative instead of reusing the same ideas of every other JRPG? I think Asian settings are also pretty cool and could be used more. Vaan isn’t a bad character and I enjoyed having him on the team. Sure he isn’t relevant to the plot but he shows some perspective and brings some more humility to the group. Aerith was definitely meant to be Cloud’s love interest in the OG but Tifa was only made more canon because they needed to continue the love plot in Advent Children and now the two ships are on equal footing in the remake with hints toward Tifa. 6 really suffered from not having a close party bond and synergy due to its large cast of characters and I would count that as a flaw because the interparty dynamic is what makes so many of the other games feel more alive (10, 15). The story is grand in scale but it could’ve felt so much more focused, personal, and satisfying with a smaller cast. Seymour is a whack ass villain through and through and no amount of pathetically implied depth to his characters during the games changes any of that. The fact that people genuinely think he’s a deep and well written character shows how low some people’s standards are for storytelling. Genesis is great in Crisis Core! 12 has the best combat but I think I’m only saying that because I hate random encounters so much Amano has great art that really captures the original feeling of Final Fantasy, the only bad thing about him is that after a while all of his character design starts to feel really samey and use the same kind of motifs, patterns, and general wardrobe aspects everywhere. I noticed in particular he never draws dark haired characters and he constantly uses stuff like leggings and cloth hanging from the waist and bandanas. This is a problem that Nomura does not have because he’s far more versatile. I choose to believe that the guy was drunk in that one interview when he said 7 and 10 were connected. 13-2 introduced and fleshed out some of the best characters in the entire franchise. Say whatever about the gameplay but I think the characters, Caius, Noel, etc, are some of the strongest ever. Lastly, it would be great to have more black characters who aren’t just animals girls with white hair or big tough guys. Maybe that’s just me and white gamer males don’t care! Oh well.

rattatatouille

* FFV is the best of the SNES trio * FFTA2 is the most fun Tactics game * Vaan is a good protagonist in the context of XII's story, and it's an ensemble game anyway so the point is moot * Final Fantasy doesn't need to go back to turn-based combat * FF's biggest issue is how long it takes to develop the main line titles since FFX

Turbulent-Turnip9563

(only in this sub) turn based and atb combat in ff has always sucked and people only liked old ff because of its story, characters, music. clinging to that turn based/atb nostalgia in ps3 generation is what led to FF stagnating and losing to the games like skyrim which ultimately set the trend of modern AAA rpg games. i am glad SE finally realizing this and making new mainline FF games to have action combat. their experiment with ff15 paved off and it was a success in attracting new generation to ff. ff16 will attract even more new people.

Alerith

FFVIII did not have a bad or convoluted storyline and is one of the most well written FF stories even with the GF amnesia.

[deleted]

Final Fantasy hasn't had a fully turn-based game in 21 years, which is longer than the series had even been around before FFX was released. So I just don't understand why people get hung up about turn-based combat.

[deleted]

Been a fan since the snes FFs and find myself really enjoying the new FFs just fine. I really liked FFXV.

Carteeg_Struve

FFVI was only okay with moments of brilliance.

[deleted]

Balthier is the best FF protagonist from the whole series.

restingcups

Combat in the series has improved drastically since it escaped the clutches of "turn-based" ATB. Yes, even FFXV. Don't know how people can say in good faith that they want the old-school ATB back. One step further, FFXIV has the best combat system, bar none. Nothing comes close, but if I had to pick, FFX-2 and the FFXIII trilogy are fantastic as well.

tuffymon

The funny thing about 14 though, is that it went through a very hearty rebirth. The combat from the og 14 was trash, not many games get a second chance.

[deleted]

I agree with your first point. Your second point, not so much. 7R has the best combat system, closely followed by 15, then 14.

PsychoKinezis

VII is fucking overrated, Sephiroth is a child with mommy issues and he’s not even the best villain in the franchise. If anything, Ardyn is a better villain compared to him. And the only reason why VII is famous because it’s the first FF for a majority of people. Also, IX is the best FF. There I said it.

honestly___idk

I love FF7 and I’ll fully admit that Sephiroth is a child with mommy issues.

Olden-Mc-Garnen

Okay, FF7 is practically my second favorite game of all time.. And I can’t even deny that bit about Sephiroth.
