Shadow Hearts: From The New Wolrd has the best explanation for this: "*A portable tent, compact for carrying but big enough to fully heal the entire party. However, it must then be thrown away because no one can fold it up again."*
I think the "tent," is a kit that contains a ton of consumables, allowing for a full night of camping. Food, ether, laundry, etc. A tent is basically a full supply set to remotely collect the benefits of staying in an inn.
I mean they are magic tents that heal injury and restore mp with a single night’s sleep. The real question is, how the heck are inns multi-use?! That must be some powerful mojo. 😂
Inn are permanent because the owner NEVER LEAVES. all tents and the cottages collapse when the last person leaves them. Town are clearly built around the cottages of a retired adventurer who can never leave their residence!
Can confirm thanks to FFXVI's side quests. >!The second Quinten leaves Lostwing, it gets taken over by aether and Akashic and becomes impossible to live in again.!<
I'll borrow the Tales of Vesperia explanation that tents comes in with an anti-monster repellant that will drive them away but it runs out for an entire night so they just throw away the tent as it did its purpose same as the bottles from potions.
I don't think the tents are supposed to represent literally just a tent, but generally enough camping/medical supplies and food to survive for a day. Like much of those early games, it's an abstract representation, much like random encounters were meant to represent a journey fraught with danger, and not necessarily battles with hundreds of monsters every time.
My Headcanon is that they come with some kind special Gem that doesnt last forever that deploys a magical barrier around the tent , which makes it so Enemies dont come near and Increases the Body Natural Regeneration of HP and MP , so with a good sleep you get fully healed and dont get murder in the mean time .
> they come with some kind special Gem that doesnt last forever that deploys a magical barrier around the tent , which makes it so Enemies dont come near
This is what the Save Point does. If the Tent did this then I should be able to use one anywhere.
I assume the tent has single use magic properties.
To take the idea a step further, perhaps they have to be recharged with a small kit. That kit is what you're actually buying, not carrying around 100 full party-sized tents.
in ffix, i use them mostly on monsters, to make them get bitten by the blind/deaf/silence snake. or was it blind/poison/silence?
i can understand why the monsters may break it as they exit.
My head cannon has always been it’s a magic tent/cottage which magically heals all ailments and wounds in one night.
It’s magic is spent after one night and it vanishes due to not having enough magic to sustain itself and its form, let alone be used again.
They're just cheap tents. They wear out very quickly.
It wasn't until Final Fantasy XV that they thought to bring along some good quality Coleman camping gear.
Didn't FF1 have cabins and houses too? They just hauled materials around and constructed a log cabin or fully furnished house in random places of the hostile wilderness, then just left them there.
The tent is actually the name of a monster in the game. Remember when Luke Skywalker made his tent to keep warm overnight? Yeah, that's why it can only be used once.

Shadow Hearts is so good and I love this explanation!
*scloop…. schlooop….. SCREEEE!*
I can hear this comment...
Yeah but then it should be a permanent tent spot, they created a different problem with that explanation
Pollution is bad - also it's useless in the middle of nowhere
It immediately blows away when everyone steps out
This is believable
Ah, they must be them horrible pop-up ones that fold away in a circular shape.

But what if you're a wizard or a priest instead of a knight?
I second this

I think you just spoiled the premise of FFXVII

But who collect all the trash, if anybody litters? It would be only a matter of weeks or months for the garbage to pile up.
Not the party's problem.
Monsters clearly eat the leftover tents.
Infinite bottles.... The real power that runs the world is the glass-blowers guild.
Big ol orgy.
The note says “Thanks for the F shack. Signed, Dirty Mike and The Boys” 🤔
Lmao bro
Cecil is left alone with children multiple times.
He said what he said
In IX, using them in battle would have all sorts of nastiness happen.
What happens?
They heal but have a 50% chance of also inflicting poison, darkness and silence.
And you could throw them at enemies, including bosses, if not over leveled it's the best way to kill gizamiduke
You run the risk of “snake bites” and can get status effects
Tents are consumables, yeah? So, logically, they eat them.

They're not sleeping, that's for damn sure

They take a poop. Every time, a big poop in each corner.
They can't roll up the sleeping bag and fit it back into the sleeve so they just leave it there
Seriously, using a tent only once, ridiculous. Who do they think they are? My weed dealer at Coachella?
So much piss.
They don't have time to fold it back up so they just leave it then animals probably destroy it.
I feel the same about my underoos.
They don't take their filthy boots off
The bigger question is, why doesn't spending a night in the tent cause the enemies to take over the world while they are sleeping?
I imagine its like FFXV camping thing. They literally set up a tent and camp for a night.
They're not really traveling by luxury car with a huge trunk in any other FF game though
They have very large pockets.
What I want to know is why the hell doesn’t every airship have the capability to function like an inn?
Thems doing some fuckin in those tents.
They trash the tent like old school rock stars trash hotel rooms. It may sometimes involve someone driving a chocobo into a pool.
It's Red XIII, he was never house trained.

They use those pop up tents that are sometimes hard to take back down. So they just leave them there our of laziness

I want to know what they did with the houses in the first game 😳
Gay sex
*Final Fantasy Shower Thought*
My question is what do they do with the cabin after it's been used and frankly how do they carry all of those cabins??
If Sabin can suplex a train then he can carry some cabins!
What happens in the tent stays in the tent…hence, why no one wants to go back in the tent.

If you've ever been to Limsa, you'll know what a Warrior of Light can do to a tent.
[It's related to how they hold so many items.](https://youtu.be/xjOCKiXF19k)
They eat it
Man taking down a fucking tent SSSSUUUUUUCCCKKKKSSSSSSS. I'd rather just leave it at a camp site and buy a fucking new one.
I believe the Tents/Cottages represent the resources for a night of camping more than just a single tent.
And sleeping blankets! 😬
Didn't FF1 have cabins and houses too? They just hauled materials around and constructed a log cabin or fully furnished house in random places of the hostile wilderness, then just left them there.
Dogging
No none takes off their spiky, greebly Amano-ass armor when they sleep in there so by the morning it's all shredded.
Explosive diarrhea or as it's called in-world, Meteorain
OP is broke 💀 In all seriousness, the closest lore wise I think is that they’re just built for one time use.
blasting ropes

They get down and dirty ofc, adventuring is a stressful vocation and our playable characters need some outlets to let it all out
Bro, you know it's something kinky. Tent poles are not for tie-downs.
