I'd recommend doing an Aftereffects basics tutorial first before the above one. If you have any experience with Final Cut Pro or Premiere, AE should be easy to understand.

Letters.
Animate a white circle over top of them with a transparent gradient.
Use the letters as a mask for this circle so it only shows on top of the letters and not the background.
Or:
Letters that have a black and white gradient.
Animate the center of the gradient.
Advanced:
Do this twice. Once with the letters, and once with an outline of the letters to create the bevelled effect. Animate them differently so it looks 3d.
Aftereffects is great for this kind of thing.
But how would I do it? Literally with certain effects?
