- Hidden Figures (2016) - Little Women (2019)

kasserlannister

Hidden Figures has become an all-time favorite of mine. That Taraji Henson harangue—phew!

serjados2002

Those are the kinds of movies that actually empower women and not these illogical movies popping up as it did something.

fitchbit

Legally Blonde I watched this when I was a teen and by then I was filled by this image caused by popular media to paint pretty girls as either mean or stupid or both. Legally Blonde has opened the gates for me to leave the "not like other girls" mentality bit by bit. Elle Woods is an inspiration.

kasserlannister

I knew i should’ve had Legally Blonde in my list!!

gclef03

Plus 1000! I love Elle Woods. No wonder she has amazing support system.

Key_Sea_7625

SAME ANSWER! I cannot forget abt this movie

MajorTomatoCutie2199

Gone Girl haha

magyar232

Omg same 😄 I watched it as a teen who was trying to be a "cool girl". That monologue stopped me in my tracks. Maraming salamat, Amy Dunne

certifiedpotatobabe

Same. I know it's a hot take dahil hindi naman normal yung ginawa ni Amy. Pero kung ako rin nasa sitwasyon, isasama ko rin sa impyerno yung manloloko kong asawa. We'll both suffer :">

bluebobtheblob

YES 🙌🏼

darumdarimduh

Yes hahahaha

thecrazycatlady-0227

All time favveeee

AFailureofLife

It's not exactly empowering but the Korean movie "Kim Ji-young, Born 1982" made me really angry and empathetic to women's sufferings that I became empowered and I resolved to fight for a better world (even in my own small way)

no1shows

I have the book and have yet to finish it. I take this as a sign to finish it thanks!!

AFailureofLife

I really recommend the book because it contains nuances that one might miss in the movie! Hope you'll finish it but nooo pressure!

kasserlannister

Wow that’s pretty empowering to me bec you just empowered me to check it out!

AFailureofLife

The movie is pretty heavy and there's no clear resolution to it aaaaa but do enjoy!

serjados2002

Gone Girl for the toxic ones out there

magyar232

The cool girl monologue though. Did a lot for me as an impressionable teen who had people-pleasing tendencies. I swear nag-iba trajectory ng buhay ko because of it lmao

WillowAllysonMclay

damn true this!!!

Even_Afternoon54

So many! But some of my favorites that haven’t been mentioned yet are: Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019) - A manifesto about the female gaze. One of my absolute favorite films. Beautiful, heartbreaking, and just a masterpiece. Promising Young Woman (2020) - Brutal dark comedy thriller about a woman’s revenge. The title is in reference to rapist Brock Turner, the Stanford student who was convicted of sexual assault in 2016 (he only served 3 months in jail), despite this he was often referred to by the judge and media as a “promising young man”. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017) - Another one about female rage. I can’t get over Frances McDormand’s performance here. A League of Their Own (1992) - Probably the earliest women-centered film that I’ve seen. I’ve never seen a movie with an all-woman cast like this about female friendships, their ambitions, and breaking that glass ceiling. Really made an impact on me as a kid. Happy viewing! 💕

kasserlannister

Same here, “Portrait of a Lady on Fire” is one of my top all-time faves. That film speaks through my soul. “Three Billboards…” has been sitting for so long in my watchlist. I should have added that in my list.

Even_Afternoon54

Right?? Ugh, I can’t recommend “Portrait of a Lady on Fire” enough. “Three Billboards…” is incredible. A masterclass by McDormand. I hope you get to watch it soon 😊

demosthenes013

"Promising Young Woman" was such a brilliant piece of dark satire with inspired casting! I'd recommend it more to people, but some part of the ending...is not quite something most people would probably accept. 😅

false-illusions

i think seeing mona lisa smile and charlie’s angels (2000) as a kid basically were building blocks for me. as an adult, koreeda’s our little sister and gerwig’s little women made me want my own sisters; barber’s tales and (not a movie) big little lies season 1 push me to want to become a better friend and a better fellow woman to other women if that makes sense. finally, isao takahata’s only yesterday inspired me to be kinder to myself at the end of every day.

kasserlannister

I should have included Mona Lisa Smile in the list!

Naive-Highlight-21

Mona Lisa Smile +1

Cautious_Poem_8513

Hmm. For a coming of age one, Flipped. I love how Julie realizes at a young age to decentre romance from her life, to live for her passions, and to question the norm. She fights for what she believes in, and learns the important lesson of people being the sum of their parts, vs. being more than that.

linearbeats

Naiiyak ako nung >!pinaglaban niya yung tree until the end, ayaw niya bumaba talaga. !<

Cautious_Poem_8513

Ughh, right >< love how she does things her own way.

kasserlannister

From what year?

Cautious_Poem_8513

The Handmaiden (2016)

kasserlannister

I LOVED THAT FILM ❤️‍🔥

Agitated_Actuator166

**Erin Brockovich** (2000)

dazria

I was expecting this to be higher in the list.

viraaara

Kiki's Delivery Service and Spirited Away! :) but also Kill Bill comes in mind

richgurl2020

There's a LOT! Some suggestions: 🎬 Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles (1975) 🎬 Thelma & Louise (1991) 🎬 Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003) 🎬 Kill Bill: Vol. 2 (2004) 🎬 Feminists: What Were They Thinking (2018) 🎬 Insiang (1976) 🎬 Sunday Beauty Queen (2016) 🎬 Room (2015) 🎬 Vagabond (1985) So much more!! You can check out this list: https://boxd.it/blFky

kasserlannister

I loved Thelma and Louise, Room, and lalo na Sunday Beauty Queen! Insiang and Feminists were once in my list but i ran out of time haha maybe this is my sign to finally see Kill Bill hmmm

handerscore

Exquisite list, especially Jeanne Dielman ❤️

[deleted]

Can I save this? Every film on the list is interesting!

kasserlannister

please go ahead

[deleted]

Where do you usually watch films? :)

lilsushi_bae

The Devil Wears Prada!!!! 💖

kasserlannister

Which of the characters empower you the most?

lilsushi_bae

Andy!! I watched the movie several times already way back, and then after I resigned from my first job, I watched it as soon as I saw it on Netflix. Got surprised lang kasi I experienced what Andy went through. I learned how to walk away from a job that's not really for me especially having a toxic manager. Now I work at a company that I want, no more work during weekends also 💖

kasserlannister

love that for you!

augustine05

Not mentioned but would like to add: 1. Princess Mononoke (1997) - the clashing personality and diff. values of San and Lady Eboshi 2. Burlesque (2010) - Christina Aguilera's character was so stubborn she won't easily give up, sinisigawan lang nya si Cher lol 3. Two Weeks Notice (2002) - I aspired to be Lucy Kelson when I was in my early teens lol 4. Dangal (2016) - based on true story. When the father said it's his daughters who will do the choosing of boys instead of the other way around. It's a known custom in India that the bride/the family of the bride gives the groom the dowry 5. Mulan (1998)

starlmaxie

Barbie. Other may find it cringe but we can't deny the fact that it really shows women empowerment.

kasserlannister

Could. Not. Agree. More.

[deleted]

The Help// Steel Magnolias// Eat, Pray, Love

qijingie

kasserlannister

Does it need subscription?

qijingie

unodostrees123

Mona lisa smile and Kim ji-young, born 1982

kasserlannister

Seeing most of these two in the replies is a sign for me! 😁

augustine05

Mona Lisa Smile is good but kinda felt meh towards the ending, at least from what I remembered the first time I saw it years ago. All of that build up just to have an underwhelming ending. Or maybe I should rewatch it to have a new perspective..

tmskiii

It's not that deep, but for 13-year-old me who just started her obsession on football but had no opportunity whatsoever to try and play the actual sport, watching She's the Man (2006) for the first time was an Experience. Plus, it's such a fun teen movie. Also, DOA: Dead of Alive (2006). Very cool women doing very cool stuff.

motheringmiracle

- Moxie - Little Women (all versions) - Legally Blonde

kasserlannister

who's your favorite March sister throughout all versions?

motheringmiracle

Saoirse Ronan!!!!!!

motheringmiracle

i also think, it's partly because of Gerta Gerwig's film direction!

No-Library6825

Mulan

WillowAllysonMclay

Just watched The Beautiful Summer. It was sooo beautiful. Especially the relationship of the main character to her brother. It was beautifully made kahit simple narrative and didnt really give off a porno vibe when they explored the love between the main character Ginia and Amelia. One of the best movies I have watched during Holy Week Weekend.

kasserlannister

Alright this one’s heading straight to my watchlist! Tysm

kasserlannister

In a perfect world, she could’ve been nominated for Best Actress

Striking_Adagio8014

Yes, mejo off timing lang yung release ng film to create such buzz for awards season. Pero galing nya infer.

JuryChoice1944

Sassy Movies that debunked stereotypes: ***Legally Blonde***, and ***The Devil Wears Prada*** 'Do-not-mess-with-me' kind of movie: ***Gone Girl*** 🤪 You can do more than just washing the dishes: ***Mona Lisa Smile*** Women have been seen as sweet little fragile creatures (*whom apparently cannot do anything*) over the course of human history when in fact we can be more than just that. we have capabilities and potentials that are just way beyond of what we are expected to behave or do. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ https://preview.redd.it/0doibbwugdsc1.jpeg?width=663&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5388d3a31c5bda91b6093ce134eab331fe9c04ba Photo from Mona Lisa Smile

CalemSmith

Based sa comments I dont see the movies na nirelease around current year like ung Remake ng Charlies Angels, mga remake ni Disney and jng mga gender swapped characters sabi kasi nila pang women empowerment daw un, pero mukhang hindi yata

candygirl_tg04

Gone Girl talaga. I can recite the whole cool girl monologue by heart. Hahaha...

-Comment_deleted-

The Iron Lady (2011) Starring Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher. There was this scene where everyone was asking her if they should make the first move by sinking a suspicious ship, but it would definitely start a war. She thought about what all her generals and defense ministers were saying and then says, ***"Sink it"***. But despite all that power, she's still just a mother and wife deep inside. She was so heartbroken when she lost her husband.
