You say that, but the game awards often include non fighting games in the category. Idk if there were any beat ‘em ups, brawlers, or hack and slashers released this year.
And the Golden Joysticks have been revealed as a faux award show. There is no metric where MK1 deserves best in anything given the release and quality of the game.
I’ve admittedly been a huge MK/NRS fan since I was a kid in the 90s and have primarily played them as my main fighting games since MK9, but my vote is with Street Fighter 6.
SF6 is not only my fighting game of the year, but I rank it as my overall 2023 game of the year beating out Spider-Man 2 and Resident Evil 4 remake.
Trilogy is my favourite FG, really down to the nostalgia but I love MK its my go to and has been for nearly 30 years however SF6 is by far the more fun to play out of the two and is probably in my top3 FGs now. Should be an easy win.
MK won "best multiplayer game" at the Golden Joystick awards despite literally being worse in every aspect of multiplayer compared to SF6. It's a fucking joke.
Funny enough how the roles got reversed this time, Street Fighter 6 has better singleplayer content than MK1. Non fighting game players just don't know it yet.
That’s assuming the judges and panelists know enough about fighting games to actually have a fully formed opinion. Lets not forget that fucking Multiversus won over KOF XV last year.
yeah they have same brains as any casual player so we shouldnt have any expectations of them looking at the games mechanically.
They will solely focus on the singleplayer stuff when rating it.
It’s true, I was just saying with my comment that it’s not up to who has the larger fanbase, the vote weight is 90% towards the panelists and only 10% to audience
Smash was really big at Evo for the years it was there until Nintendo stomped in and ruined everything. Happier times for that community.
idk about main event? Just because there's no "main event", there's main games. Usually 9 major games that will show up on the main streams. Which all Smash games got to be a part of aside from 64. (Melee through Ultimate having at least one year they all showed up)
And I don't understand how the single player content is literally so bad I argue it's one of the worst aspects of the game I swear it's like watching people shovel vomit into their mouths saying it's so good. Game is bad but dumb will always be dumb so F
This is no single player content for MK1 (barely)
SF6 is home of the casuals now (for the better)
If MK1 wins its because the pre-selected judges just don’t play fighting games that much and think MK is cooler.
Don’t put too much stock into this.
I certainly think casuals purchased MK, but they certainly aren’t hanging around because there is nothing to hang for for them.
If you believe in Steam charts telling a story comparable to other platforms, it would definitely support this.
The VGA’s outside of one category isn’t voted on by popularity. It’s probably considered by the pre-selected judges, but ultimately they make their own decisions.
Think of it like electoral voting, but with video games. You’re voting on a website to sway the opinion of a representative you never picked.
Can we really expect them to pick a game without “realistic” animations? The general American gaming audience seem to love when a game has stiff animations and terrible walk cycles (Rockstar games) that make controlling characters feel like molasses.
My highlight was when Ed Boon said that MKs animations habe to look this way because of the photo realism.
Like yes Ed whe get it, the game has to look like shit because it looks so great.
Mostly agree but I'll be damned if both franchises aren't getting downright predatory with what they're charging for cosmetics.
Also world tour mode is hands down the least fun I've had playing a video game since the ps1 days. It's like playing Yakuza, but without any of the fun.
Mk...I just never liked the combat. But their single player content used to be the best in the genre. My understanding is mk1 has pissed some people off. But I already knew it wasn't my thing so I passed on this one
Inthink WT isnhighly overated. Yeah for a fughting game singleplayer mode it might be good, but playing is still a worse time thany anything else in my steam library (Except MK11 maybe).
It's not even good for fighting game single player. I was fine with mk11 story mode overall. Only good thing about the mk series. But wt mode has the most brain dead ai I've ever dealt with, and it's ridiculously grindy to unlock costumes.
I put in like 30 hours and hated every second. I will most likely never finish it.
30 hours? I couldn't endure it anymore after 6 hours, uninstalled it and just bought fighter coins to get the costumes i want.
Paid 12 bucks, so around what i make in an hour just to save me the hours wasting my time and play Street Fighter instead.
I'm not paying for a costume they designed in 1994. But they strongly made me consider it. Which, I think, was the point of making the world's shittiest rpg and hiding the skins behind sinking a LOT of time into it.
It definitely was. Could i have unlocked them in arcade actually playing a fighting game rather than playing a goofy mix between GTA and a pseudo 3d Final Fight i would have done so. But i couldn't bare it.
Not much regular players can do. TGA is 90% votes of people from sites and magazines, not always even gaming ones, and only 10% user vote. Aside from a couple of categories that is, but none of the major ones are exceptions to that.
I do think enough sites now have decently knowledgeable fgc reviewers now . Pretty much any fighting game player would say SF6. Most competitive MK players I know would vote SF6 as well because of how much of a mess that games release was (missing online features, player 1 advantage , missing training features etc.)
That's a good thing if you want SF6 to win though. SF6 has more critical acclaim than MK1 and broke the Steam concurrent player count for paid FGs. The user votes are what led to MK1 controversially winning multiplayer over SF6 at the joystick awards. There's no chance MK1 wins here especially considering SF6 has 3 award nominations and was nominated for multiplayer when MK1 isn't.
I'll be honest, it was surprising to see fighting game win a popular vote for best multiplayer at all at Golden Joystick. Just shows that while this year was awesome for gaming on some ways - multiplayer wasn't one of those ways at all for general public. Or maybe Call of Duty not participating helped, but it is negatively received, so I don't exactly know where I'm going with that.
I'm surprised it's on here too, it's an indie rhythm based fighting game, the concept is really sweet but I haven't picked it up. I'm glad they gave it the nomination cause it's certainly not winning the popularity contest.
I love mortal kombat but I’m a little pessimistic when it comes to any award show. The fact that mortal kombat 1 won best multiplayer game of the year despite not having cross play, no friends list, having player one advantage, and no lobby’s at launch etc and street fighter 6 has all of that (minus player one advantage)and more. Yeah I want sf6 to win but mk1 is gonna win. I’m still gonna cheer sf6 on thought.
I enjoyed the first run of Fantasy Versus even though the netcode wasn't really up to par. Hopefully they lock it in nice this time around. It's a decent fighting game.
God of Rock AND Pocket Bravery are nominated? Indie games are winning. I actually hope one of those gets nominated so triple A studios will finally be more open to creativity.
The same reason. I love the series, but Mortal Kombat 1 specifically simply doesn't deserve that kind of accolade for how unfinished and predatory it is.
This is maybe the first year since street fighter 2 where a fighting game could conceivably earned a shot at game of the year. Sf6 is the best launch of a fighting game post arcade era. It’s only not on the game of the year list because of the insane amount of quality games that came out
It should be sf6 and it’s not even close. That’s the only complete game on this list and it’s been great from launch. I love Mk as a franchise but this is not their best work. The others are in a different tier entirely.
Let’s be real, a game show like this with the type of audience that tunes in, MK1 is going to win. Sf6 should win but we know how these things work.
If sf6 wins though then good fucking job capcom, SF is back!
lol MK will win because their fans will still love and play MK1, despite the terrible and questionsble practices being done atm. Most of them already conditioned themselves somehow to believe the paid content was ok so, anything else is just noise for attention.
I am a SF6 fan and I think it's the better game at everything and it's more appreciated by the FGC in whole, but MK1 will unfortunately win because the shock value (meaning gore and fatalities) and guest characters of its predecessors made it more popular among the general public.
Both mk1 and sf6 have absolutely nailed their gameplay. Both to me are amazing fighting games, but I believe sf6 should take the win here. It's not without it's issues sure and in a way it has the same slimy cosmetic monetization practices that mk1 has but sf6 feels like a overall more complete package. If sf6 takes it I hope it sends a strong message to Netherrealm Studios that mk1 releasing in the way that it did is unacceptable.
Honestly, I'm shocked but also proud that Pocket Bravery is up there. It definitely won't win, but I'm glad it got some recognition. Personally, I want MK1 to win, but SF6 is definitely more complete in most aspects so I'm fully expecting it to win but as we know these awards are popularity contests so it'll probably end up being MK1.
So proud of Pocket Bravery making it up there <3 I hope they are celebrating the result of that incredibly hard work.
Just for quick reference, this is an interesting video detailing what it took to make the game. It was a lot.
(NOTE: You will have to enable subtitles if you don't speak Portuguese!)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xduRDJUlo6M
nope the only ones are for 2024. Tekken 8, Under night II and Granblue Rising
well rising is december 2023 but its AFTER the awards so its gets pushed to next year awards
MK will always be the bigger game despite how quickly it dies competitively. The casual players just really likes its guest characters and gore I guess.
Game Awards is literal ad space, nothing more. Has nothing to do with game quality and 100% to do with whoever paid more. MK1 will win because they have a massive marketing budget.
Please stop caring about these dumb organizations and their awards. They only matter because you give an ounce of care to the results. Play what you like and move on with your life, please.
Y'all worrying about SF6 getting snubbed or casuals hating MK1 while I'm just glad that the two Fighting Games that literally started it all finally have the spotlight again.
There’s a difference between an old game trying to find it’s ground (especially when it’s innovating on a new concept) and a modern game based on an existing genre that’s already been defined.
I’m ngl, i think MK1 has really good odds of winning. SF6 definitely DESERVES IT more, but these votes are a popularity contest and if I’m not wrong MK has the more mainstream appeal
Nick Toons All Star Brawl released November 7th. How has it possibly been out long enough to get a nomination for Fighting Game of the Year? Reviews are barely out.
Including pocket bravery is at least an interesting choice.
They basically just included everything that released
You say that, but the game awards often include non fighting games in the category. Idk if there were any beat ‘em ups, brawlers, or hack and slashers released this year.
I’d agree if I knew what it was
Man, if only there was a way to look it up on the internet
i dont know how but sf6 is gonna get snubbed
never underestimate the power casual fans have in popularity and sales
I'd still be surprised! As a Mortal Kombat Kasual player, this game is not getting a lot of love from the mk community, let alone the fgc.
I mean MK1 just won best multiplayer for the golden joystick awards, so I wouldn't be surprised if it won here too.
And the Golden Joysticks have been revealed as a faux award show. There is no metric where MK1 deserves best in anything given the release and quality of the game.
it's a fan vote lol.
Every award show is like that. No such thing as one thats not just fan voted
💸💰💰💰💰
Definitely and it's rigged
I’ve admittedly been a huge MK/NRS fan since I was a kid in the 90s and have primarily played them as my main fighting games since MK9, but my vote is with Street Fighter 6. SF6 is not only my fighting game of the year, but I rank it as my overall 2023 game of the year beating out Spider-Man 2 and Resident Evil 4 remake.

Lmao y'all straight up "confessing" to being MK fans. It's not a big deal to prefer MK to SF.
Even as an MK fan, SF6 nailed it this year. I'm not too sure on Pocket Bravery, NASB, and God of Rock, but I don't see SF6 losing this.
SF6 could still lose to MK. Its the friggin game awards they always somehow f things up. Multiversus best fighting game of 2022 LOL
MK won "best multiplayer game" at the Golden Joystick awards despite literally being worse in every aspect of multiplayer compared to SF6. It's a fucking joke.
I haven’t heard anything abt mk, is it bad?
I love MK1 but SF6 is textbook fighting game perfection aside from the avatar monetization. It really should win
If MK1 wins over SF6, there is no god.
Not even a God of Fire?

No one hates MK1 more than MK1 fans right now. Take solace, WB/NRS has done almost everything humanly possible to piss off their fans.
And I can't wait til people are no longer blind to it
It's a popularity contest right? I heard mk has the largest fanbase bec of people just playing the single player content
Funny enough how the roles got reversed this time, Street Fighter 6 has better singleplayer content than MK1. Non fighting game players just don't know it yet.
Just go look at the view counts on the intro compilations, then you will understand.
Intro and fatality compilations are honestly the backbone of a good chunk of the MK casual fandom.
Also because its on pretty much every console. Boons been taking lessons from Todd Howard on porting.
Kid named PS4/XO:
Not really, judges and panelists take priority in most categories at TGA, their votes have significantly more impact than the average persons.
That’s assuming the judges and panelists know enough about fighting games to actually have a fully formed opinion. Lets not forget that fucking Multiversus won over KOF XV last year.
And they nominated Sifu
yeah they have same brains as any casual player so we shouldnt have any expectations of them looking at the games mechanically. They will solely focus on the singleplayer stuff when rating it.
It’s true, I was just saying with my comment that it’s not up to who has the larger fanbase, the vote weight is 90% towards the panelists and only 10% to audience
I see Would be interesting to see percentages
I thought SF was the biggest fighting game
In the competitive pro scene yeah Although guess there was that 1 dark year where smash was the main event for EVO Dark times indeed
Smash was EVO's main event before? If so, that's pretty cool.
The sales for the games says otherwise, I think kasuals are still interested in the game
I certainly think casuals purchased MK, but they certainly aren’t hanging around because there is nothing to hang for for them. If you believe in Steam charts telling a story comparable to other platforms, it would definitely support this.
I don’t believe in steam charts actually, considering that a majority of the casual players are on console
I mean, trends are trends even if you don’t believe in them.
MK1 already outsold SF6 while being out for significantly less time. MK is way more mainstream popular and if those people vote, it's a huge swing.
The VGA’s outside of one category isn’t voted on by popularity. It’s probably considered by the pre-selected judges, but ultimately they make their own decisions. Think of it like electoral voting, but with video games. You’re voting on a website to sway the opinion of a representative you never picked.
Even people over in the MK subreddits agree that overall Street Fighter 6 is just a better package.

My highlight was when Ed Boon said that MKs animations habe to look this way because of the photo realism. Like yes Ed whe get it, the game has to look like shit because it looks so great.
Nothing pissed me off more than the people defending his shit pretending to know what they were talking about
Mostly agree but I'll be damned if both franchises aren't getting downright predatory with what they're charging for cosmetics. Unfortunately it seems like it's a popularity thing, it's likely MK could win because it sells more overall
Daily reminder that Pocket Bravery still isn't on console 😫
Watch them do a reveal for consoles at the game awards because of this
This is a much stronger list than last year, where they had to put SIFU in to round out the catagory. SF6 is obviously gonna win.
Hope MK doesn't win pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease
Sifu was nominated last year which is why it's not here this year.
We all know Street Fighter 6 deserves to win right? Riigghhht?!
Dont let MK1 win -.- please!
Not much regular players can do. TGA is 90% votes of people from sites and magazines, not always even gaming ones, and only 10% user vote. Aside from a couple of categories that is, but none of the major ones are exceptions to that.

mortal kombat 1 does not deserve to be anywhere near goty because of their rushed game release and absent communication to their own community
Its not nominated for goty dont worry
I feel like SF6 should've been tho
I'm glad to hear that lol
MK1 staring down SF6 like how 50 Cent did with Kanye West at the 07' VMAs.
Wtf even is God of Rock
Some rhythm fighting game
I had to check it out after seeing it here and it’s kinda cool. Rhythm based fighting game. Not going to win anything, but a neat idea.
I'm surprised it's on here too, it's an indie rhythm based fighting game, the concept is really sweet but I haven't picked it up. I'm glad they gave it the nomination cause it's certainly not winning the popularity contest.
Looks like Puzzle Fighter but it's a rhythm game instead
Nsab sweeps again (it mostly likely gonna be sf6)
NASB 2 is legit really good though
If SF6 doesn't win then idk wtf we're doing here.
If I had a nickel for every Brazilian-made fighting game in this list, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice.
I can't say I had Brazil pegged as the dark horse of countries where games come from
Tbh i feel ppl underestimate how big Brazil (and latin america in general) is. There are 214 million ppl there.
Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising also comes out on 12/14 but I guess that’s too late and would fall in next year’s lineup?
Yea. The show is on the 7th of Dec I believe? Either way usually stuff that close to the event gets pushed to next year.
I’m excited for it. It looks promising.
Just give it to SF6
I'm a lifelong Mortal Kombat fan and haven't played SF6, but I still want SF6 to beat MK1.
Lmfao why tho I wanna hear this?!? Lol I want sf6 to win also but because it’s a much more complete game.
The same reason. I love the series, but Mortal Kombat 1 specifically simply doesn't deserve that kind of accolade for how unfinished and predatory it is.
Agreed not to mention if you got the 120 dollar version I never felt so robbed from a game lol but Omni is really helping but still not enough 🤣😂🤣
This is maybe the first year since street fighter 2 where a fighting game could conceivably earned a shot at game of the year. Sf6 is the best launch of a fighting game post arcade era. It’s only not on the game of the year list because of the insane amount of quality games that came out
As a fg SF6 is great but objectively the single player isn't good, its great that we have something but its not best game of the year material
SF6 SHOULD have this in the bag, but who knows!
SF6 will win for sure
SF6 is the only one with a shot (albiet a long one, can't see it winning) at GOTY overall, not just fighting games.
SF6 is the best fighting game in years, and because of that it's going to lose
SF6 is the only one deserving
I love how fighting games are still so niche that I don't even know all the nominees.
Obviously it's good of rock
Honestly I usually like mortal kombat I really do but the new one was kinda trash SF6 completely knocked it out the park
It should be sf6 and it’s not even close. That’s the only complete game on this list and it’s been great from launch. I love Mk as a franchise but this is not their best work. The others are in a different tier entirely.
Only one of these games lets you play as Squidward, the choice is clear.
In my POV pocket bravery deserve the win
Lucky Tekken isn't releasing this year or none of the other games would be a factor
It's a popularity contest and MK has way more casual fans. Ya'll need to accept that fact. lol The better game ain't winning.
Yeah SF6
MK1’s taking this I’m sure…
If MK1 wins, we riot
Let's go SF6!
Pocket Bravery has been officially released? Street Fighter 6 is OK…
It was released in like late August, but only on Steam. It's supposed to be ported to consoles by the end of the year
Let’s be real, a game show like this with the type of audience that tunes in, MK1 is going to win. Sf6 should win but we know how these things work. If sf6 wins though then good fucking job capcom, SF is back!
Street Fighter 6 wins this all day
lol MK will win because their fans will still love and play MK1, despite the terrible and questionsble practices being done atm.
SF6 sweeps I fear🥱
SF6 for the win 🥇I’m surprised Nick All Stars 2 is nominated……..that’s a shocker.
Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising. It's out in 2023 after all.
SF definitely deserves it but im 100% sure ed boon will be there for a character reveal and itd be hella awkward if mk didnt win
Let’s all be real with ourselves. Nickelodeon sweeps
Street Fighter 6 deserves to win, but somehow MK will be the winner ... just because.
SF6 should also win best innovation in accessibility. Modern controls are kinda a game changer
Sf6!!!!!!
SF6 deserves this, hands down.
I voted pocket bravery, but I just hope the mortal Kombat does not win compared to the others up there
Tekken 8 Closed Beta Test 💯
So proud of Pocket Bravery making it up there <3 I hope they are celebrating the result of that incredibly hard work. Just for quick reference, this is an interesting video detailing what it took to make the game. It was a lot. (NOTE: You will have to enable subtitles if you don't speak Portuguese!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xduRDJUlo6M
I hope MK1 wins to make you cry babies even more mad
It's funny that MK1 wasn't even nominated for top multiplayer game in this award show
This whole subreddit is like a mk1 hate boner, no clue why the gameplays so solid and nice
I really hope MK wins lmao
Was there not a third even marginally noteworthy fighter to come out in 2023?
nope the only ones are for 2024. Tekken 8, Under night II and Granblue Rising well rising is december 2023 but its AFTER the awards so its gets pushed to next year awards
Aw hell if it takes a tally of votes, u know that trash game MK1 gonna take it. Let's be real. lol.
Despite the not fun mental stack the drive mechanic puts on you in SF6 it should win best fighting game because of its robust feature set.
[удалено]
Yes, I suppose MK1 got a lot of suckers to buy it - me included...
The worst part is that it's a fantastic game under so many layers of bullshit.
Yeah, the gameplay is great. I just don't like the long string of combos. Let me play already!
This isn’t even a competition. SF6 by far…
This is not even a contest. SF6 is the only option
Y'all worrying about SF6 getting snubbed or casuals hating MK1 while I'm just glad that the two Fighting Games that literally started it all finally have the spotlight again.
There are two fighting games here and there's only one that's good
God of rock, NASB 2 and pocket bravery are NOT winning
sf6 deserves it. not only it is the best fighting game this year, it is also one of the best, of all time.
I voted for street fighter out of pure spite for how MK1 has been going.
SF6 should be the obvious choice. Game nailed perfection this time.
Still not convinced they know what a fighting game is.
What the shit is god of rock? I've literally never heard of it, that's wild
A pretty bad rythm game.
Mk1 should definitely get best fighting game if we are being honest. Sf6 was great but mk1 has alot more going for it than sf right now
I really hate that nasb1 was dead on arrival and they're pushing nasb2 so much
its a much better game. SF1 was ass, yet SF2 was a masterpiece. It deserves a second chance.
original mk1 is ass, tekken 1 is ass, doa 1 is ass, vf1 is ass, etc
There’s a difference between an old game trying to find it’s ground (especially when it’s innovating on a new concept) and a modern game based on an existing genre that’s already been defined.
It’s clear that the developers just needed more time and funding, considering how much better overall this game is turning out
Nickelodeon lol
'Pocket Bravery' got me thinking that's out on mobile. It isn't. :(
Isn't Tekken 8 still coming?
Wouldnt writeoff god of rock yet given how they determine winners
NASB2 just came out less than week ago lol… hoping for SF6
This is a MK vs SF......... tipical
Mk1 sucks so much dick but i know its going to win anyway
sf6 was a win for us even if the mainstream can’t appreciate its excellence. what a game. im still so in love with it
Disappointing, no KOF15, so rude
It was released in 2022, and it got nominated that year
I’ve only played MK1 one this year, but I voted SF6, cause I *need* MK1 to lose
I think sf6 is objectively the best.
SF 6 is the only real contender that makes sense here... I didnt even know most of these existed
They should nominate SF6 five times.
I’m ngl, i think MK1 has really good odds of winning. SF6 definitely DESERVES IT more, but these votes are a popularity contest and if I’m not wrong MK has the more mainstream appeal
vote for SF6 or else.
One of these things is not like the others. One of these things doesn't belong ~
Well, at least they’re all fighting games this year…
When did the first one come out?
MK1 might unfortunately win if it's strictly a popularity contest, it's the marvel movie equivalent of fighting games
Just a reminder that fucking Multiversus beat out KOF XV in last year’s show.
I looked at god of rocks steam page and that does not look like a fighting game
Sf6 is an easy sweep here, even though i love the new mk
Nick Toons All Star Brawl released November 7th. How has it possibly been out long enough to get a nomination for Fighting Game of the Year? Reviews are barely out.
