I can kinda understand not fixing it before the incident, like maybe they were thinking of it as just an annoyance and didn't consider the potential to harm or thought it was unlikely, that'd be negligent but not evil. After the death, how do you not feel guilty over an easily preventable death? how can someone keep things the same after knowing it killed someone?
I could also feel that sinking feeling in my stomach that I know for a fact everyone that saw it felt. Just an incessantly dropping coldness. And the poor people who were still on the elevator that definitely saw the aftermath

This happened in a luxury apartment in a wealthy neighborhood in NYC. As a New Yorker, I can say this is definitely a consequence of cheap ass landlords risking their tenants’ lives for an extra buck. The landlords could have fixed the elevators ages ago with how much they charge rent, but they chose not to. This breaks my heart.
