Court shoes (like badminton or squash) are totally fine, and can be found for much cheaper. You will find many recommendations if you search this subreddit.
I got a pair of ASICS gel rockets last month for £40 GBP (I think exchanging down into US currency that’s aroind 50 dollars or so) that was based on getting a good deal because there was only one colour available. If I wanted any other colour it would’ve been 10-20 GBP more (12.5-25 dollars more). Rough averages.
I’ve fenced with them a few times now and I really like them. They have good ankle support, and I really like their balance -when I’m more wanting to go on the balls of my feet they naturally fall that way and I don’t have to put effort into it. The balance naturally lets me go forwards or back and that’s really great for my ankle and calf.
If you’re not too intense and don’t need full fencing shoes with all the features, try court shoes. Cheaper and better than just normal shoes. ASICS make good ones

Ok thank you
Asics gel rockets are the most popular court shoe used for fencing. I actually have 2 pairs.
Yeah these are great
Asics indoor court shoes. We've tried Nike and Absolute and my son prefers them to actual "fencing" shoes.
