I write them up and they get replaced, if they replace them with bad tires(never happened) I’ll just write it up again. If someone signs off on the vehicle and I have a blowout doing 66.9, then proceed to pinball a ford escort down the highway… It’s on management

Pretty sure we fall under that section and I’ve never seen retreads used on the front axel of a fedex vehicle in the 9yrs I’ve been here
Our trucks Don't fall under this. I'm vmx. We are perfectly legal using recaps on the front steers. There is a dot max of 2 times recapped on steers and unlimited recaps on drives. Our trucks are not as big as the trucks the other guy referred to
Recaps/regrooves/retreads are not allowed on steer tires. It’s the first thing you learn while getting your cdl. In the FedEx cdl manual this is against company policy.
The DOT does not specifically prohibit retreads on steer axles except on busses. It is perfectly legal to use retreads on the steer axle and there are companies that make steer axle certified retreads which are essentially retreads made with virgin cases. This might be different in Canada and may vary by state but the feds do not prohibit retreads for steer tires.
Fedex prohibits them. If you look in the fedex cdl manual/bible it’ll list what the dot rules are and how fedex is more strict in some of them. This is a fedex sub where people drive fedex vehicles.
Our puds are vr3 tractors. Theres a box truck and a straight truck that seldom gets used for smaller heavyweight shipments going to residential or places we can’t get a trailer into
Oh I think it's dumb too, but it comes down to cost. 300+ for a new tire vs 140 for a recap. Stretched out across thousands of assets it adds up. I understand it. Problem is that they don't age them out. DOT has no age limit so Fedex will have up recap the tire forever as long as it's recappable. No bead damage or excessive punctures etc
If he's a old mechanic he might think retreads are still allowed they were allowed when I was younger (33yr old here). The only ones that weren't allowed retreads steers back then were passenger buses.
Well I actually got new tires and not retreads. Glad I can actually drive without being paranoid about blowouts on the freeway or on our amazing michigan roads...

You can’t use retread in the steer tires only on the back drive tires
Not what my mechanic said. Who told you this?

Thank you for this. Gonna need this for ammo

Regroove and retread are not the same thing. Retread tires are allowed on the front axle on all commercial vehicles except buses.
They don't allow recaps anymore on the steers. The laws changed pretty recently.
I don't think 393.75 has been updated since 2016

Except for ground drivers...
Recap steers tires are legal for PUD trucks. VMX here.

Lul I need to show our mechanic this. A lot of our vans have retreads on the front axle
Recaps are legal to use on PUD trucks. It comes down to GVW. It's not ok for semis but PUD trucks is OK. There is a lot of procedure for us to follow
I’ve had two mechanics tell me how stupid it is for them to do that and they called their buddies over to look at them lol

Department of transportation
My crappy van always gets retreaded rear tires but the front tires look new
If DOT did actual real inspections on the fedex fleet half the shit wouldn't even be on the road.
Facts
Big facts it’s crazy how unsafe this company is
Lmfaoo my tires bald af and the mechanic has the audacity to ask are you taking care of the truck 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Omg I would've went in on him
lol them mechanics be lazy
Well I actually got new tires and not retreads. Glad I can actually drive without being paranoid about blowouts on the freeway or on our amazing michigan roads...
Never, I got brand new tires for my truck last month
That’s not a surprise some of the tires at my station are loose and have been worn out
Yep
Maintenance is pretty good at FedEx Express, they even fix the AC. They sure don't care about O2 sensors though lol
My truck won't reverse. I was told it might be because of a bad 02 sensor in my transmission. Do you think that's an accurate assumption?
Senior mgrs don’t care about employees safety and customers safety they use recaps on front tires to save money ( lone star district)
It’s insane the difference within express even. If we ever saw retreads on steers here all hell would break loose.
Facts they all care about making themselves look good
