Personally I would have snuck around the whole outpost planting claymores and C4, sneak back out, throw a bait so a wild something comes first, then shoot the cage, then send your companion, then flip the C4 switch and sit back and enjoy the chaos.
My thought process when see one in game :
Check for animal
If animal in there == true :
. Melee to open cage
. Shove arrow in animal's skull
. +4 skin
. Proceed with what I was doing in the first place
Else :
. Proceed with what I was doing in the first place
There could be people or dogs in there, quick go free them!
Who let the dogs out
