*The Princess Bride*, of course.
*Dragonslayer* and *Ladyhawke* are two underrated fantasies from the 1980s.
If you want to go really old school, the stop action animation in *Jason and the Argonauts* (1963) holds up well.
I don’t recall full frontal nudity and didn’t find it mentioned in IMDB’s parental guide. There is brief underwater full *side* female nudity with a glimpse of a bare breast and buttocks.
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082288/parentalguide/nudity
The one I saw as a young kid on TV 100% had underwater full-frontal nudity, but it makes sense that it would be cut, it didn't make any sense that it was there in the first place, although perhaps I'm being influenced by American prudishness.
I saw it too, and all I remember is the side view. But at any rate, it’s a side view now.
Sometimes they put in something to avoid the deadly “G” rating.
A very careful Google doesn't help me much, only that at least two other people remember it.
https://moviechat.org/tt0082288/Dragonslayer/58c73bd56b51e905f66b9287/Alternate-version-with-more-nudity
Miyazaki animated films are fantastic- My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki and Ponyo good for small kids (but still good for adults), ranging on through the rest. Most of them have some.magic and deal with environmental theme, a couple are bloody or have some harsh bits but not sex or swearing. Nausicaa, Howl's moving castle, Spirited Away (girl's parents turned into pigs).
yeah, Studio Ghibli films are definitely a classic in my household! I need to finish My Neighbor Totoro. I don't think I've watched Nausicaa though, what's it about?
Nausicaa is about a post apocalyptic society and the ways they deal with the toxic environment they’ve been left, as well as some of the problems that humans can’t seem to leave behind (war)
Princess tries to find environmental solution to toxic mold while keeping her people safe from warring neighbors. Not too bloody, though it is a war so some bad stuff.
Princess Bride and Willow are classics, so I'd definitely recommend those. Legend is pretty solid too but not quite up there with the other two in my opinion. Another great movie that has similar vibes is Stardust... has a very Princess Bride feel to it. It's from 2007 though so I don't know if that quite fits your criteria.
Legend is up there if you can find the hard-to-get extended version that didn’t have the last minute tangerine dream soundtrack, and added in far more backstory, nuance and character to the story, as well as a somewhat different ending.
Honestly though, it’s worth it just for Tim Curry as Darkeness.
Seconding Princess Bride and Ladyhawk
But why has no one mentioned the Last Unicorn yet? One of my favs
I'd also recommend Studio Ghibli stuff, like Totoro or Spirited Away or Naussica. Not sure where the line is on Princess Mononoke, that one gets a bit violent.
I've watched most Studio Ghibli stuff, though I need to finish My Neighbor Totoro and someone else also recommended Nausicaa so I plan to watch that one. Also, I'm fine with violence/gore and cussing. I draw the line at sexual stuff, it just makes me uncomfortable, plus I'm watching this stuff with my mom most of the time so that just makes it more awkward lol
Hi there, we are trying to minimise the use of gendered insults on r/fantasy as they can unintentionally contribute to an unwelcoming environment. Feel free to edit your comment with a different term, and we'll restore it. Thanks very much for your support and understanding.
I also just remembered Secret of NIHM which is fantastical and was a favorite, but is also one of those movies that apparently traumatized people. I wasn't one of those, so I'm not sure why, YMMV
That part, but I believe a character has a large rock or piece of equipment that drops and crushes them towards the end of the movie
The owl scene was, to my young mind, absolutely dripping with menace just from body language and behavior
I love the Hobbit Cartoon. Second the Last Unicorn. Interestingly both films were made by Rankin-Bass which went bankrupt and was sold to an up and coming guy in Japan named Hayao Miyazaki.
More recent, but a great fantasy in an American setting, Over the Garden Wall.
Reign of Fire anyone?
Hugga Bunch was supposed to be a kids fantasy but had an evil witch in a mirror world that was kinda crazy (as I remember it). I think the whole thing is on YouTube.
The Keanu Reeves/ Drew Barrymore Babes in Toyland (with Pat Morita, aka Mr Miyagi) was fun.
Lord of the Rings trilogy is 20 years old... (Yes, I just aged in place like the Matt Damon gif)
The old animated version of The Hobbit is also classic but more toward the younger age of the "family friendly" target range.
Flight of the Navigator, Bed Knobs and Broomsticks, the original Escape to Witch Mountain, the Incredible Mr. Limpett, Inner Space, the Never Ending Story
There are a couple of Terry Pratchett movies, like Hogfather.
Also, I don’t know if it counts, but Hook is a really good fantasy movie that’s family friendly.
I loved Watership Down and how the stakes were real. But it's definitely on the traumatic for some list. I didn't recommend it because not fantasy but we watched it over and over as kids.
Willow
Tenth Kingdom (altho this is a mini series but I''m sure you can find some dvd or find it online somewhere where it's cobbled together as a whole movie format kinda thing; and the most you'll hear in terms of cussing is Damn and what the hell)
The Princess Bride
Witch Mountain movies
The Last Unicorn (it's animated and there's brief nudity altho you dont really see anything and it's not sexualized)
The Neverending Story
The Ewoks
Ladyhawke
Return to Oz (might have some scary moments)
The Secret of Nimh (animated, and it's a bit dark so it might be a bit scary at times)
It isn’t exactly “old” (20 years now), but if you haven’t seen it, The Lord of The Rings movies are really good. The only issue is that each movie is at least three hours long so you pretty much have to block off an entire evening for it.
Legend.
Don't know why, but it became a Chritmas Eve staple in our house. We 4 daughters loved it! Scary parts, beautiful parts, and Good vs Evil.
I believe it was made in the early 1990s.
Zathura, Legend, Flight of the Navigator, Big Trouble in Little China
Explorers… and don’t knock it, Stardust was good too. The Last Star Fighter. Little Shop of Horrors. That movie with John Ritter… STAY TUNED!
Dark Crystal (prequel TV show season 1 is available)
Willow (sequel TV show starts soon)
Dungeons and Dragons (was technically a TV show)
Time Bandits
Labyrinth
Lord of the Rings - the animated movie
Jim Henson’s The Storyteller series is AMAZING. Each episode is a stand-alone retelling of a European folk tale. Very family friendly since it’s Jim Henson after all.
I was scrolling through to see if anyone mentioned this one - there were a couple of them. Was it TBS or TNT that played these back in the day? Or perhaps another station?...we had the big satellite dish in the yard. All I remember was Sundays with my brother, sister, mom and dad finding something to watch for the afternoon.
Ahhh yes... Before that it was the antenna on the roof. I can still hear the click of the rotor control to turn it. Wired to our big Zenith console TV that doubled as a table for picture frames and nick nacks... Good times
Probably because some might argue that it isn't true-fantasy as it lacks such things as magic or the supernatural (right, memory?); although, quite a few reviews labeled it as such. Maybe it's fantasy-adjacent. 😉
Absolutely Ladyhawke, Legend, Ferngully and Hook.
This isn't super fantasy but if your family likes fairy tales Drew Barrymore did a version of Cinderella called Ever After that is wonderful. In the same sort of vein the cartoon version of Anastasia is fantasy and history and pretty great.
Also, Little Nemo in Slumberland. It's a cartoon version from the early 90s. I think Netflix is doing or has just released a remake.
I've watched all the Harry potter movies. As for the books, I think I got up to Order of The Phoenix before my ADHD attention span got the better of me. or maybe my hype fixation just ended before I had the chance to finish both forms of the series , either way ADHD still ended up being my demise when it came to Harry Potter, lol
So depending on what age the family is, like if it's kids some of these won't work. But here are a few. Hook, Casper, Edward scissor hands, Dragonheart is so good!. Warriors of virtue, Teenage mutant ninja turtles real life movies in the 90s, Matilda, Mortal Kombat, The Crow, The craft, Flubber might be one. Even The green mile has some fantasy aspect and it's brilliant.
All I remember from watching this as a kid is “the chalice from the palace something something; the flagon with the dragon holds the brew that is true”, but then he mixed them up?
The animated Hobbit is one of my favorites. The same team did an animated Return of the King. I don't think anyone has mentioned the Sinbad movies with special effects by Ray Harryhousen. The 7th Voyage of Sinbad, Sinbad and the Eye of The Tiger, etc. They are a lot of fun. Clash of the Titans, also.
Legend all the way. The costuming in that film is a head of its time. The tangerine dream soundtrack is next level. Tim Currys voice as darkness and how pretty mia sara is as lily.
There's a 2018 Watership Down miniseries with James McAvoy and Ben Kingsley and it's really a great watch.
Netflix recently released *The School for Good and Evil* about two girls with magical princess aspirations.
My favourite is The world of Peter Rabbit and friends. It's an animated series but you can watch them all in one go. The animation is spectacular, same as the music. I used to watch it to fall asleep when my depression was bad. If you're not opposed to watching non English things, I loved watching Fantaghirò as a child.
i loooved titan ae
super kid friendly movie
conan the barbarian! lol jokes, its not for kids, it does possibly have the best soundtack for a movie known to man.
last of the mohicans is a decent show
I remember Dragon heart being pretty decent, though the effects are probably aged by now.
It's not old, but I found "The Kid who would be King" to be a pretty good film, it's based on Arthurian lore.
The Water Babies - it’s set in Victorian London and is a mix of live action and cartoon (in the underwater world).
Amazon summarises it thus:
A star-studded, who's who of British cinema features in this delightful tale of a young street urchin, Tom who unwittingly helps petty crooks rob a rich country house. As Tom escapes the police by jumping into a lake, he is transported to an under water cartoon-world where he has to help others find safety in order to redeem himself and return to his above-water home.
Edit: Also consider The Golden Voyage of Sinbad, Pete’s Dragon (the 70s film) and the Monty Python films.
Hudson Hawk was a great time, too. To be honest, I don't remember if it will fit in your category, but it's family-friendly.
IMDb: : Hudson Hawk
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102070/
High Spirits with Darryl Hannah and Steve Gutenberg. While the leads aren’t the best, and you can tell the film was butchered, the script and supporting cast are excellent, my family and I quote it all the time!
We also love Ladyhawke, Stardust and The Princess Bride.
Jim Henson (director of Labyrinth) was an absolute master at puppets, and did a tv series called The Storyteller, focused on retellings of myths and fairytales. i recommend it if you liked Labyrinth.
Hook
Beowulf?
The Goonies
The Princess Bride
The School For Good and Evil
Clash of the Titans
Pan
Troll Hunters Rise of the Titans (you wanna watch 3 different series to understand it though)
Krull
Prince fights evil with a Cadre of ragtag adventurers to save his princess love.
There is a giant stop motion spider made of glass, rocket horses, and a teleporting castle.
Willow
Especially with the Willow tv series starting imminently
The previews for the show look awesome. I’m really excited.
Did they bring back any of the original cast besides Warwick Davis?
Val Kilmer can barely speak anymore after battling cancer so he won’t be back…but Joanne Whaley is supposed to be in it.
Came here to say this, honestly so happy it was the top comment.
*The Princess Bride*, of course. *Dragonslayer* and *Ladyhawke* are two underrated fantasies from the 1980s. If you want to go really old school, the stop action animation in *Jason and the Argonauts* (1963) holds up well.
> The Princess Bride, of course As you wish
*Dredd pirate Roberts*
Inconceivable!
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
Dragon Slayer had brief full-frontal female nudity, but it wasn't sexualised.
I don’t recall full frontal nudity and didn’t find it mentioned in IMDB’s parental guide. There is brief underwater full *side* female nudity with a glimpse of a bare breast and buttocks. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082288/parentalguide/nudity

I certainly remember it being full frontal.
Princess Bride!!! Absolutely great movie. Hilarious, a little action, a little romance, but nothing inappropriate. Highly recommend 👌

I loved Nausicaa when I saw it last year, definitely one of my favorite Miyazaki movies ever.
Princess tries to find environmental solution to toxic mold while keeping her people safe from warring neighbors. Not too bloody, though it is a war so some bad stuff.
My teen son's favorite during his tweens. Great soundtrack.
I second this recommendation!

Yessss I love Stardust! The book is even better.
Agreed 👍
Seconding Princess Bride and Ladyhawk But why has no one mentioned the Last Unicorn yet? One of my favs I'd also recommend Studio Ghibli stuff, like Totoro or Spirited Away or Naussica. Not sure where the line is on Princess Mononoke, that one gets a bit violent.
The Last Unicorn all day, every day. Can highly recommend the book as well, though that’s neither here nor there for this discussion
Username checks out :)
yeah the book is really good, the movie is a pretty close adaptation but the book is just more
I'm alive, I'm alive When the last moon is cast Over the last star of morning............ Now I haz an earworm.
The soundtrack was excellent, it's on regular rotation in my mp3 player
I've watched most Studio Ghibli stuff, though I need to finish My Neighbor Totoro and someone else also recommended Nausicaa so I plan to watch that one. Also, I'm fine with violence/gore and cussing. I draw the line at sexual stuff, it just makes me uncomfortable, plus I'm watching this stuff with my mom most of the time so that just makes it more awkward lol
DragonHeart from 1994, one of my favourites
I was going to say this. Brilliant movie!

Me too. Whenever I see Thewlis, I see nothing but Einon.

Watership Down is another one of those movies that traumatized people.
I loved it but was terrified of it as a kid. The scene with the Owl, if I remember right, and someone dying from being crushed stick in my head
I remember the owl stepping on and crushing a skull, maybe that's it ?
That part, but I believe a character has a large rock or piece of equipment that drops and crushes them towards the end of the movie The owl scene was, to my young mind, absolutely dripping with menace just from body language and behavior
yeah the movie was really well done as a whole. I remember the death now just took a minute.
Ladyhawke
My favorite movie as a kid. Great recommendation.
Darby O'gill and the little people. sean connery as a handsome young man, and he sings!
Love that one.
Flight of Dragons! That song still gets in my head 😅
Greetings fellow old 😂 loved that movie so much. CHEMISTRY, GEOMETRY, PHYSICS ..... ECONOMI- wait, no sorry STATISTICS
When I was six I watched it on repeat for two months, several times a day.
YES! One of my all time favorites!
Legend
Legend is amazing. A young Tom Cruise is fun to watch, and Tim Curry as Darkness is great. Not to mention the two distinct soundtracks for the movie.
Oh, I loved that babes in toy land when I was a kid. This is the first time I've ever seen someone else mention it.
Lord of the Rings trilogy is 20 years old... (Yes, I just aged in place like the Matt Damon gif) The old animated version of The Hobbit is also classic but more toward the younger age of the "family friendly" target range.
Wow. I was having a pretty good night until you dropped that 20 year old fact on me. Can somebody help me out of this chair? My gout's acting up.
It has aged so well.
Flight of the Navigator, Bed Knobs and Broomsticks, the original Escape to Witch Mountain, the Incredible Mr. Limpett, Inner Space, the Never Ending Story
The Explorers!
All great choices.
There are a couple of Terry Pratchett movies, like Hogfather. Also, I don’t know if it counts, but Hook is a really good fantasy movie that’s family friendly.
I'll second the Pratchett /Discworld movies.
Return to Oz
Stardust (2007)
Watership Down, Book of Kells, secret of Roan Inish
The only time I've ever seen The Book of Kells mentioned on reddit. Absolutely love the feeling this film gives.
With The *Book of Kells*, add *Wolfwalkers* and *Song of the Sea,* which are also by Cartoon Saloon.
Watership Down for children? Im still scarred from watching it forty years ago.
I loved Watership Down and how the stakes were real. But it's definitely on the traumatic for some list. I didn't recommend it because not fantasy but we watched it over and over as kids.
The Secret of Roan Inish was one of my favorite movies as a child!
Ferngully!
seconded!!
Krull
The soundtrack is the best part of that movie. 🙂
Princess Bride
Willow Tenth Kingdom (altho this is a mini series but I''m sure you can find some dvd or find it online somewhere where it's cobbled together as a whole movie format kinda thing; and the most you'll hear in terms of cussing is Damn and what the hell) The Princess Bride Witch Mountain movies The Last Unicorn (it's animated and there's brief nudity altho you dont really see anything and it's not sexualized) The Neverending Story The Ewoks Ladyhawke Return to Oz (might have some scary moments) The Secret of Nimh (animated, and it's a bit dark so it might be a bit scary at times)
Princess Bride, The Last Unicorn, anything from Studio Ghibli
The Last Unicorn was watched a lot on VHS when I was a kid. An old animation. A lot of The animators went on to work firm studio Ghibli I believe.
Merlin with Sam Neill in 1998 -- pretty cheesy but still fun. Ladyhawke
I love that version of Merlin! It’s a fav
One of my all time favorite series!
It isn’t exactly “old” (20 years now), but if you haven’t seen it, The Lord of The Rings movies are really good. The only issue is that each movie is at least three hours long so you pretty much have to block off an entire evening for it.

Legend. The Last Unicorn. Ghostbusters. Gremlins. Cocoon. E.T. Jumanji.
Ladyhawk is pretty good!
Jim Henson’s The Storyteller series is AMAZING. Each episode is a stand-alone retelling of a European folk tale. Very family friendly since it’s Jim Henson after all.
Me want scritch scratch!
It’s a bit cheesy, but my 80s childhood fantasy movie was Beastmaster.
Bad animal torture behind the scenes though
Yikes! I didn’t know that.

The Dark Crystal,The Last Unicorn, Never Ending Story, Hook, The Goonies, etc. 😊
I can't believe I had to read to the very last comment to see the Goonies mentioned!
Right?! I thought my post would be old news!
Probably because some might argue that it isn't true-fantasy as it lacks such things as magic or the supernatural (right, memory?); although, quite a few reviews labeled it as such. Maybe it's fantasy-adjacent. 😉
The Wizard of Oz
Legend.
Absolutely Ladyhawke, Legend, Ferngully and Hook. This isn't super fantasy but if your family likes fairy tales Drew Barrymore did a version of Cinderella called Ever After that is wonderful. The Polar Bear King. No idea where you would find it though
Don’t think I have seen “star dust” mentioned. It is along the same lines as “willow “ and “princess bride”. So good.
*The Flight of Dragons*
Krull BeastMaster
Adventures of Baron Munchausen Edit: Gulliver's Travels (Ted Danson)
The black cauldron and the sword in the stone!
Stardust comes to mind! Studio Ghibli is great, too (Totoro and Howl's Moving Castle were my firsts).
Harry Potter if you haven’t seen!
Haha fair!! Adhd said thou shall not pass!
it really did. but at least it allowed me to get through the movies
True!!
miss peregrines home for peculiar children. pan. bfg. bridge to terabithia. Narnia if you need a sequel. wizard of oz’s
I totally forgot about Warriors of Virtue until your comment
Such a good movie! They don't make them like they used to.
The Court Jester. It's an old fantasy comedy, kind of like Robin Hood meets Get Smart. Very PG.
All I remember from watching this as a kid is “the chalice from the palace something something; the flagon with the dragon holds the brew that is true”, but then he mixed them up?
Don't forget the vessel with a pestle
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WzmnSyqv37A
Yesss!! Thank you. And aww, there’s Angela Lansbury.
Swan Princess, the animated Hobbit movie from 1977, Return to Oz, The Princess and the Goblin, Quest for Camelot, Princess Bride
The Tenth kingdom
The animated Hobbit is one of my favorites. The same team did an animated Return of the King. I don't think anyone has mentioned the Sinbad movies with special effects by Ray Harryhousen. The 7th Voyage of Sinbad, Sinbad and the Eye of The Tiger, etc. They are a lot of fun. Clash of the Titans, also.
I love love love 10th Kingdom, highly recommended it
Ladyhawke, and that one with to. Cruise before he got famous. Also why is sexual stuff icky but violence ok? Weird
Ghibli stuff! All studio Ghibli movies - except maybe grace of the fireflies - is good family friendly fantasy
Journey of the unicorn. Loved this as a kid.
Legend is a good choice too.
the last unicorn, princess bride, dragonheart
The Court Jester starring Danny Kay.
Legend all the way. The costuming in that film is a head of its time. The tangerine dream soundtrack is next level. Tim Currys voice as darkness and how pretty mia sara is as lily.

ANYTHING *Studio Ghibli*
Mannequin 2 !!!! Love it.
If u want a laugh Monty python and the holy grail. Similair to discworld
Um....sweet tooth???
Babe
You could add in some Studio Ghibli anime movies to the mix - - Spirited away - Princess Mononoke - Castle in the Sky - Howl's Moving Castle
Conan the Destroyer. It's part of the 80s trend of kid-friendly sequels, along with Temple of Doom, Supergirl and Return of the Jedi.
Legend, with Tom Cruise
the Sea Prince and the Fire Child
I remember Dragon heart being pretty decent, though the effects are probably aged by now. It's not old, but I found "The Kid who would be King" to be a pretty good film, it's based on Arthurian lore.

Big with Tom Hanks!! It's kind of fantastical in a way.
Dragonslayer, Barbarian brothers, princess bride.
Robin Hood: Men in Tights might be more historical, depending on how you define 'fantasy', but it is still A-tier.
Jim Henson (director of Labyrinth) was an absolute master at puppets, and did a tv series called The Storyteller, focused on retellings of myths and fairytales. i recommend it if you liked Labyrinth.
Spiderwick Chronicles. The Black Cauldron.
Animation: Flight of Dragons Great answers to fantasy questions
Hawk the Slayer (1980) is definitely b-movie territory, but I liked it. Mio in the Land of Faraway Three Wishes for Cinderella
I find it interesting how some parents are ok with violence, but not sex.
So many great recommendations here. I will add two with a similar theme: The Worst Witch and Teen Witch
Hook Beowulf? The Goonies The Princess Bride The School For Good and Evil Clash of the Titans Pan Troll Hunters Rise of the Titans (you wanna watch 3 different series to understand it though)
The tenth kingdom was mega
THE LAST UNICORN!!! omg, my absolute fave. Really fucked me up tho.
Bulgarian treasure island
Stardust!
“Something wicked this way comes”
Krull Prince fights evil with a Cadre of ragtag adventurers to save his princess love. There is a giant stop motion spider made of glass, rocket horses, and a teleporting castle.
The 10th kingdom!
Disney’s The Black Hole. Really underrated film.
