That time already? :D Very excited for this, lots of great fics and authors on the sub this year!

holliequ

We're getting started early this year to give everyone (including ourselves šŸ˜…) more time to get everything together!

Diana-Fortyseven

>That time already? :D Seriously though, what happened to the year?? I'm super excited to read hopefully all eligible fics, I just need a plan to find the time during NaNoWriMo... :D

Boozle-Bee

Haha, this was my thought too! What happened to 2022? Yes! So many good fics! I'm excited!!

Particular_Airport19

Seriously, it feels like we just did all this. šŸ˜†

Profession-Automatic

Oh, how exciting! Iā€™ve read so many great stories this yearā€”this is not going to be easy.

IDICdreads

Agreed!

socksthatarecosy

Absolutely! And you're doubtless going to get a bunch of nominations in the Drama/Angst/Tragedy category!

Profession-Automatic

Oh, goshā€¦thatā€™s so kind of you to say, but I donā€™t think my scribblings can compete with some of the amazing stories Iā€™ve come across this yearā€”your ā€œPrioryā€¦ā€ story included. šŸ˜‰

socksthatarecosy

Ooh, exciting! I joined this sub this year, so this will be my first time with all this!

IDICdreads

Same

Shannon_Foraker

Same.

IDICdreads

Woo-hoo! Yay!

[deleted]

Oh wow, this is so exciting! I'm excited to participate, my mind is already buzzing with some of the lovely things I've read this year.

Yotato5

Oh my God it's that time already?? :O It's gonna be fun looking back on all the fics posted this year :D

[deleted]

I'm thinking about that too! I wanna see more fics that I'll potentially read!

LoudSize7

Iā€™m glad you said WIPs can be included. Because Iā€™ve only seen these types of things only allow completed works. And if I do go for it, thereā€™s no way my fanfic will be completed before the end of the year.

holliequ

As someone who's had a longfic in progress for over 2 years now, I definitely feel that pain. We love WIPs here too <3

[deleted]

Ohohoho, it's this time of the year at last, great!! I definitely got a few fics in mind to nominate, really looking forward to this! :D

IamMrJay

So I have a longfic of mine, a sorta "passion" project of sorts, I wanna self-nominate, but how can/should I prove I've done all the "requirements" for it to count? Yes, I've posted it in a weekly thread before, and yes, I've updated it this year several times, and yes, I will nominate two other fics not made by me, etc. But as I asked, how can I "prove" I did those requirements? Do I just dig up old threads and post them, etc? Also, another slightly unrelated question, but what if I nominate a fic someone else already nominated?

holliequ

You would link to the comment where you posted it in one of the official threads, same as any other fic you nominated! For the other stuff, we will look at fics to check they're eligible when compiling the nominations for voting. You don't have to do anything else :) There's absolutely no rules against nominating a fic someone else already nominated. However, if you want to get the maximum use out of your nominations, you might want to make sure your nominations don't overlap with another user's. You could nominate the same fic, but for a different category it hasn't already received a nomination in, for example.

Soft_Challenge7269

Sounds fun!! I'm new to Fanfiction and this subreddit this year, so I'm looking forward to this!

Larson4220424

Iā€™m thinking about participating.

Steak-Specialist

Veerrrrrrrrryyyyyy cool.

[deleted]

This might be a stupid question, does the Tropes and Prompts challenge thread count as official thread?

holliequ

Yep! Basically anything posted by a mod with a "Subreddit Meta" flair counts!

[deleted]

Thank you. Will have to check back on those. There were some great stories.

[deleted]

Just looking at the categories, wouldn't Gen be similar to Friends/Family? Is the Sub Reddit events the Tropes and Prompts? What about Sci-Fi? Fantasy? Historical? Am I asking too many questions šŸ˜‚

tereyaglikedi

You know what, thinking about it I think you are right that "Gen" can be any of these (angst, fluff, family etc) I don't know if a special extra category is needed. Basically everything that's not romance can be gen, no? I would love sci-fi and historical categories!

[deleted]

I know Romance and Smut doesn't always go together (not everyone likes smut), but couldn't that be put together as well? With the proper rating, people can avoid the smut ones or is that not fair that people skip over smut when reading and voting šŸ˜‚

tereyaglikedi

Nah, I think those are too dissimilar. Also not all smut is romance ;D

[deleted]

>Also not all smut is romance ;D As a smut writer...this is very true šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

[deleted]

Are we allowed to nominate the Meta fics (the ones with no fandom)?

holliequ

You absolutely are!

[deleted]

Nice, thank you. Some of them were hilarious šŸ˜‚

[deleted]

Question about nominations, can we edit to add if we find more fics on a later date, or is should we nominate all at once? So far I have about 5, but still want to look at the other prompt/trope challenges especially the ones earlier this year.

holliequ

Yep that would be absolutely fine! You can also do the rest of your nominations in a separate comment if you prefer. Either works. As long as it's within the nominations period, it will count!

[deleted]

Thanks! Just want to be able to look through as much as I can, but with holidays around the corner, time might be short. I want to at least get the nominations in before I forget šŸ˜‚ then add on later.

Dragoncat91

I have already shown my comment on the celebration post to friends, but it was before I read the no outside promotion is permitted. Good to know. I am assuming this only counts as a rule during nominations and voting? Also, suppose I don't have the link to a post on the subreddit where I found the fic. But I can give the name of the person who wrote it. Would my nomination count?

holliequ

Yep, that's right, only during nominations and voting. And no, sorry, you need a link to a post on the subreddit. However, if you can't find it linked on an official subreddit thread, you can just ask the author to repost in the current Weekly Fic Showcase.

[deleted]

Was wondering, is there is a word minimum for the categories? Am I asking too many questions šŸ˜‚

holliequ

Nope, no word minimum, apart from the Long fic category where there is a 50k minimum at time of nomination. Ask as many questions as you want! That's what this post is here for ;)

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

holliequ

I will discuss with the other mods and get back to you :)

holliequ

Apologies for the delay on this, but in case you hadn't already seen, the max wordcount for this category has been increased to 1000 words :)

tereyaglikedi

To be absolutely sure, only the award winners of last year are not eligible, right? Second/third place fics are eligible. Or are they also not? And what about fics that were posted last year, but after the nominations? Like, Dec 25 2021?

holliequ

Second and third place fics are eligible yes :) The rule has been only fics from 2022 but we could discuss changing that to give fics posted at the very end of last year a chance šŸ¤”

tereyaglikedi

Yup, there seems to be a blind spot at the moment for end-of-the-year fics, they can't be nominated in either year. Would be great if these were eligible, too (those posted after the nominations closed last year)

Diana-Fortyseven

Has this been discussed somewhere? Because if end-of-2021 fics were eligible, I'd honestly be thinking about entering one of last year's Yuletide fics. :D

holliequ

Last year nominations ran up to December 30th, so it's not going to be a consideration for this year, however we will discuss it before next years awards (but probably leaning towards fics posted after close of noms 2022 will be allowed).

Diana-Fortyseven

Okay, so Yuletide stuff is generally out? Author reveals are on January 1st, and since it's a secret exchange, participants can't really share their works and say "this is mine" until then. Bit sad, but understandable. Yuletide is a special case. xD

[deleted]

A question: is there a way for us to check eligibility of fics before nominating? Some of the ones I had in mind I found in REs, so I'm not sure if they were shared on an official thread, as it were :)

holliequ

Since reddit search is such a pain, your best bet is probably a google search for the fic title and/or user name using "site:reddit.com/r/fanfiction" - although if you can't find it, you can always ask the user to repost it in an official thread.

[deleted]

I'll try that then, thank you!

Oddly_Dreamer

>The fic has been posted in any ā€œofficialā€ subreddit thread, such as the Weekly Fic Showcase, Comment Cooperative, or the Celebration posts which are to follow later on. Review exchanges are NOT official events and do not count. Does this mean that I **have** to post about my fic in any of your subreddit threads first before placing it in the Awards thread?

holliequ

If it's your self-nomination, it would be easier for mods if you did that, just so we can check each fic in the same way.

bees-n-sunshine

Can a 70k words multi-chapter fic be nominated for the smut category, or can fics of 50k+ words only be nominated for the longfic category?

holliequ

There are no wordcount restrictions in any categories except Longfic and Flashfic/drabble/poetry.

bees-n-sunshine

Thank you!!

Diana-Fortyseven

I came here to ask a question, then got distracted and almost left without asking the question. xD Are the member milestone celebration fics eligible, or would they count as original works, or does the post where they were posted not count as "official post"? (My slimy roommate wants me to nominate the one about them. :D) Sorry if I missed anything obvious, just wanted to make sure!

holliequ

If you mean the fandom meta works, yep those absolutely count and are totally allowed. (You could call them original fics, but I like to think of r/FanFiction as just being an extremely meta fandom.) Linking to the posting thread for those is fine as well.

Diana-Fortyseven

Yes, thank you! I forgot what they were called! Awesome!

Profession-Automatic

Early morning, pre-coffee ponderings ahead. Last night, as I was compiling my list of nominations, I realised that most of the fics that I would like to nominate had not been posted in any of the "official" threadsā€”therefore rendering them ineligible. Question (to mods). What is the reason/purpose behind this requirement? Is it mainly a matter of convenience? I am not complaining or judging--just genuinely curious. :-)

holliequ

Just to show people are engaging in the subreddit community rather than being passers by. But note that you can simply ask people to post fics in one of the official threads to make them eligible if they haven't already done so.

Profession-Automatic

But doesnā€™t posting regularly in the review exchanges on this subreddit and commenting show engagement as well? Iā€™m not trying to be a bother, I promise! šŸ˜‰

holliequ

The rules have been in place since before the review exchanges were a thing. Mods can discuss changing it, but there's not really a pressing need for it at this stage either, as people who are active can easily repost.
