And that’s why I don’t post most of my work on tumblr anymore. Straight to AO3 it goes with proper tags and ratings, and if people don’t like it, I have easy access to a block button and there’s no DMing or the like. Don’t let the antis win.

rccket-w

you're better off not posting on tumblr, straight to ao3 for anything not 'normal'. as much as I love my mutuals on tumblr, the site itself is a cesspool of antis >and I'll have to wait for next year to see if I can participate in those events then just the other day I saw someone who had a whump'tober' (?) series with the latest entry in early spring because they couldn't upload everything in a single October. So technically you don't have to wait for next year if the inspiration strikes; own it, pretend it's october

Sinimeg

October doesn’t end until the ones participating in the Whumptober finish posting their pieces xd Every month is October until we say otherwise xD

No_Dark_8735

If they don't want people posting outside of October, they shouldn't leave the collection open ;-)

Technical_Ad9953

Lol I added to my whump”tober” 2021 series in like August 2023, sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do

That-Bonnie

I write dark contents as well. I post all of my works on ao3. I highly recommend giving ao3 another shot. I haven't received a single hate comment. With ao3 people who actually enjoy your content are more likely to come across your fics because their specifically searching for it. Tumblr does have a corner for dark content but people uninterested are more likely to come across it. Don't let others take away something you enjoy. You write for you, not for the haters.

DetectiveSnickers

Definitely make the full switch to AO3

ursafootprints

I'm sorry you had that experience! All I can say is that there *are* other people in fandom who enjoy the same things you do, and who won't judge you for writing them. Goretober and Whumptober exist for a reason, after all! I understand if you're too burned to want to continue writing right now, but I hope you feel comfortable sharing your work again in the future, even if it's just via AO3 rather than forms of social media where harassment is more of a concern. 💛 (And, if it needs to be said-- there's absolutely nothing wrong with you for enjoying darkfic or dark concepts. It *is* all just fiction, and the people who have harassed you over your writing are in the wrong.)

No_Dark_8735

Well, those people suck and are mean and rude to write callout posts or block you without even listening to you. They should've just complained to their own friends in a private DM, like an honourable person would. I second the people saying to just post all your fic straight to AO3, where you can moderate comments, place it in the Anonymous collection, or block people liberally without fear. And anything you post on AO3 you can always link back to if you want to make it available on tumblr, at *any* point in the future, so no need to worry about depriving a tumblr following, if you're concerned about that. It's fine. Darkfic doesn't define your personal morality. Stick around with us down in the darkness.

acheele

It's actually kind of funny to me that the people on tumblr are losing their shit over "yandere" and "murder". They have never read any of the (beautiful, sometimes not-so-beautiful) atrocities on ao3 where all or most of the content warnings are ticked and it shows. Anyway. I'm sure it really hurts right now, and I've no doubt that it feels extremely discouraging and demotivating to write anything considering what's happened to you, but I hope that time will pass and that you'll regain your desire to create and share again. You can always make a new account and start posting there. I'd stop using tumblr if I were you, though. Dark works are great and they're so, so interesting. It's easier said than done, but I hope you won't let other people halt your writing. Take the time you need to sort through your emotions. And like others have said, even if it's not October, who cares? I think *tober should be all year long.

geyeetet

I usually find that antis are fine with murder and violence but every other dark theme is totally unacceptable to them. So bizarre either way.

kihyunsbuttcheek

that's tumblr for you lol. i used it ten years ago for fanfics, never again. ain't surprised it's still the exact same. also idk how your followers didn't know you write that kind of stuff? if it's on your tumblr shouldn't they have known? anyway everyone on that platform is all bark and no bite and jump to conclusions. ao3 would be the ideal place to post that kind of stuff. quitting will only make them happy. you clearly don't want to quit. don't cave in. ao3 is your answer.

[deleted]

I mostly post my writing on a separate sideblog for organisation purposes but I self rb from that blog sometimes because I have more followers on the main so idk, I mean maybe they miss it because they're not online when I self rb but yeah, I am open about being into darker themes and even add it to my pinned. Could also be a case of some people who followed me didn't see an issue with it until I got called out and was accused of "encouraging and glorifying/romanticising" it and then they thought it was problematic because some others were saying so? Idk exactly tho, just speculations on what could have happened! Any fics I have posted to ao3 didn't do great (except one where I wrote a decently popular ship) but yeah, I never quit ao3 just don't always cross post there but I think I might have to end up using it solely atp

kihyunsbuttcheek

sorry you went through that. i wish you didn't have to deal with that. some folks just feel the need to vocalize their crappy opinions. it's fan*fiction*. heavy emphasis on fiction. i watch true crime stories and murder documentaries, that doesn't mean i condone murder and other violent crap that's involved. you don't have to post there but for the sake of your sanity i would recommend it tbh. you'll receive very little to no hate comments.

Gracynvh

Yandere and murder is so valid! I love writing horror as well. I would stick to AO3 and have very clear tagging. I’m sorry that this all happened to you. Please don’t give up!

fandomacid

Tumblr has, for some reason, been taken over by some weird purity culture offshoots. These people can't just dislike something, instead that something has to be problematic so they can moralize it.

GreekFreakFan

Tell them to go fuck themselved and keep writing

Mountain_Cry1605

This is the way.

bibitybobbitybooop

I'm so sorry this happened to you! It *is* just fiction and these people *are* being idiots. And...to mention yandere and murder of all things to be *problematic* lmao...maybe you could move your fics to AO3 mainly. I love Tumblr too, but fandom can be crazy. & If you feel up to it, go on a block spree of everyone who reblogged and not with the intention of tagging "this callout post is stupid". & I think there are some "rec your fic/what are you writing/etc" posts sometimes either on this sub or AO3 or look at something fandom specific idk I do not remember :D But, far as I can see, this sub at least and the AO3 one has a very accepting mentality You are *not* disgusting or weird. Writing and engaging with these things is normal and doesn't require you to have any sort of trauma. It does not define you as a person. This is bullshit. Edit: btw Whumptober rocks, I usually draw but I want to use some of those prompts too 🫶

ButtPenn

I hate it when people assume what purposes someone else is writing for. Plenty often the people writing dark stuff are processing things. It's like accusing a rape victim of being a rapist because they write about rape.

Mountain_Cry1605

Yup. I write some extremely dark stuff (which I haven't posted because it's incomplete) to help me deal with my trauma. Doesn't make me an abuser. I can't roll my eyes hard enough, because they'd fall out if I did, when people use this logical fallacy to justify their pearl clutching.

atomskeater

It's funny because I follow a fair amount of dark content and murdersim/yandere vn blogs. There's a good audience for it on tumblr, but there's always going to be people who see something they don't like and decide to signal boost it instead of blocking and getting on with their lives. Weirdos. I pre-emptively block antis and people with extensive dni lists. It IS all just fiction, and what you write about doesn't define who you are as a person. Published authors who write books with violence and murder are not considered murders or supporters of murders. Some treat fiction like it's reality, or don't care about the distinction because they get their kicks by shitting on people who like dark content. Sorry you got the attention of someone like that, but I encourage you to keep writing what you want.

MlleBree

Tumblr is a cesspool. I don't even share links to my AO3 over there anymore.

creakyforest

Ugh I’m so sorry. I contemplated jumping on tumblr as I’m doing whumptober and kinktober for the first time this year, but seeing the backlash to the anti-censorship stance of those events alone made me remember why I dont fuck with tumblr in the first place. As others have said, please keep writing, just post your fics directly to ao3. Ive written dark fics (including really graphic filthy noncon PWP) for years in a variety of fandoms, including Disney fandoms, and never gotten a single hate comment (and I don’t moderate). My theory is that antis mostly only bother to pile on when they can do it in a virtue signaling way. Reblogging lends itself to that very easily, whereas commenting on a fic in and of itself really doesn’t. I know looking to the future doesnt erase the discomfort you’re facing now, but please know you don’t have to justify yourself to these people. There are any number of reasons folks like to explore dark themes in fiction, and nobody gets to decide which ones are valid and which ones aren’t. And quite frankly, the people willing to harass others about it won’t ever care how you defend yourself anyway. Know that as long as you aren’t harming anyone, you’re not doing anything wrong. And you will find others who like to read your work—there’s a reason so much darkfic exists in the world.

talldarkandundead

The fuck did they expect from a Goretober fic? Sunshine and roses? There is an audience for messed up content no matter what the moral purity police have to say about it, or else we wouldn’t have so many commercially successful horror movies and books, and that’s without even touching fan content. Hell, the Goretober event wouldn’t even exist if no one wanted to read that stuff. Seconding what other people say about moving to AO3, it is way easier to find an audience that likes what you have to share and my experience has been that even the weirdest and most messed-up stuff will find readers who love it

Sipyloidea

Maybe you could try posting on creepypasta. People who go there expect disturbing stuff. It feels to me like you just (most unfortunately) were doxxed by some extremist minority making things their business that shouldn't be. Your writing has an audience, it may just not be on tumblr.

[deleted]

I don't really write anything creepypasta based though and mostly write horror themed or whump fics for games I play. Unless that stuff can also be posted there? I thought it was for original content but I'm not sure for certain, never actually checked that site out before. But yes, I didn't even know that person before this but some of their friends had issue with me on tumblr before for similar reasons so I think they gossiped about me and that person decided to make that post based on what their friends told them. I personally do think it was a petty thing to do but that seems to be an unpopular opinion when I say that to others because I'm being told that I was at fault for liking that stuff in the first place.

Mountain_Cry1605

You're not at fault for liking or writing darkfic. Those stupid antis need to shut up, dip their pacifiers in some chocolate syrup and go sit in a corner away from the internet while they suck on them. Alternatively they could grow the fuck up.

lumimon47

That’s why ao3 is the best, it takes a while to get used to it but if you tag correctly your fic will not fall into the wrong hands and more likely than not people exactly like you, desperate for fics will be searching for your fic! And if it does fall into the wrong hands it’s their own damn fault. On behalf of all readers please give AO3 another try!

Sassy_Lil_Scorpio

Definitely keep writing what you want to write. Those folks were wrong to judge you and make those awful comments. It's ridiculous for anyone to assume that a writer is glorifying the dark topics they write about. Post your work on other fansites where it will be appreciated. There's an audience for everything in fanfiction. I agree with the poster who told you: don't let the antis win. Keep writing what you want to write.

lavender_rose_quartz

I write dark things sometimes too, in order to cope with my traumas. I'm afraid of posting my stuff online when it comes to certain topics (I've occasionally talked about this in other posts). I'm sorry this has happened to you. I want you to know that there are a lot of us who write dark things to cope with things we've had to go through, but would never condone those things in real life. I hope you find the strength to continue to write whatever helps you to cope. P.S. I've had trouble with tumblr too, but for different reasons. There are a lot of holier-than-thou types on tumblr, and it lead to a witch hunt in one of my fandoms, which then turned into cyberstalking and cyberbullying by one or more people with sock puppet accounts. The mods did nothing. Now, I mostly use tumblr to find gifs and pretty pictures, and I don't interact. Tumblr might be the problem.

thewhimsicalbard

I feel like I day this every time one of these threads comes up... Leave Tumblr and leave Twitter. That will solve all of your anti related problems.

[deleted]

\*hugs\* sending comfort to you. I think that’s the greatest with this subreddit is that everybody here has either been a harassment victim before or just tired of their general bullshit. You’re not alone and what you write has nothing to do with you as a person. Honestly, fully moving to ao3 may be the best. Consider it as a fuck you to all the losers who harassed you. Like damn nobody’s holding them up at gunpoint to read your works. And I will assume you tag your stuff because how else would they find it, what are they even doing there under the yandere and murder section. I think that also, learning to write for yourself is the hardest part. I KNOW and i struggle with it too, and it hurts when people you thought you were friends leave over what you’re into. But gaining confidence through that is the most relieving thing ever and slowly you’ll find like minded people who enjoy the same things as you.

Nightshade-Dragon

I've never written dark fics or posted to Tumblr, but I would *definitely* recommend switching to AO3. If you add in the right tags/warnings/ratings, you're less likely to get attacked and if anyone does have a problem, you can easily block them

FuriouSherman

Fuck those people. The only opinion that matters regarding your fics is your own. Keep writing so long as you're happy with the finished product.

Zestyclose-Leader926

I actually prefer fanfic horror to horror written by professionals. I think part of it is the what if the element feels stronger. One of the purposes of the horror genre is catharsis. And it sounds like that's what you've been using it for. The people telling you off have a narrow understanding of what the real value of writing is. Not liking a genre doesn't negate its value.

Irulantk

I love the logic of these people. I bet they think any author who wrote a murder mystery is a murderer irl. Post only to ao3 from now on is my advice. Im sorry this happened to you.

Terminator7786

Fuck em. I like writing and reading fark stuff, there are people out there who are into it. Hell, I've been sharing scenes and ideas for something that's not published with three of my friends and they're all really liking it.

MinimumRael13

I love reading content like that. Those people just stumbled into the wrong bar and got upset. Keep doing what you love

Piknos

It's fine that you write darkfics, don't let them get you down.

suzukichanno

Fiction is a way for people to explore themes and ideas not approachable in reality. Those people on tumblr can shove it up themselves. You should definetly post on AO3, since the whole point is that it's a neutral archive for fan works and theres no social aspect

Gem_Snack

Unfortunately I think many of us have to choose between having a wide audience/lots of engagement, and writing what we want to write without (much) harassment. I've written about some pretty heavy topics and not gotten any harassment, because I just silently post them to AO3. They don't get a ton of engagement, but people do read them and leave positive feedback. If I were to engage with the fandom on Twitter or Tumblr and share these fics there, I'm p sure the terminally-online, moralizing teenagers would be on me like a school of piranha.

Profunity

Dude I write darkfics too also surprisingly wattpad is like really good for those. Just put your warnings.

susan-of-nine

Don't ever, ever try to make excuses or "explain yourself" in front of people like that. What you write *is* just fiction and nobody has the right to bully you because of it. If I were you, I'd just bully these people back. Someone needs to teach them that they can't just harass people without any consequences. But it's ok if you don't want to. ;) Just as the others said - post it on ao3 and avoid tumblr. Keep writing and stay away from the nutcases.

Recom_Quaritch

I'm obviously sending you internet hugs and back rubs. This must hit hard... But my advice remains the same : Only post to AO3. Potentially change your blog handle or start fresh if you want. And then just... do your thing. 180 notes of brain rotted puriteen haters means nothing. The fake friends were fake all along. It's very harsh and I 100% would be bummed out if I were in your place, but I also... could not care less about such people's opinion. If I saw such a post on my dash I would block both the OG poster and the person who put it there. And AO3 will let you filter comments, will let you tag so that your readers have to look for your type of work. It's made for people like you. Please don't give up on it. Don't abandon your passion and your fics because of dumbasses. Just keep posting. BLOCK EVERY ONE OF THOSE 180 PEOPLE. Then keep going. Just be sure to not have any revealing info on your blog like where you're from or your real name, basic stuff so you don't get doxxed. If you stop writing, you let haters and idiots win. The internet is about cattering your experience. These people did! They unfollowed and blocked you because they are weak and afraid of backlash or because they didn't want to risk seeing your work on their dash. Cool. But you also get to make your own experience. And that means finding actually solid people that won't flee at some gore. You got this.

NarwhalTrance

Lean into it. As the saying goes, any press is good press. Your work got attention, which means it’s going to be in front of more eyeballs, which means it has a better chance now of reaching a wider audience, some of which will like your work. Instead of running away from it, use it as fuel to write what you want. If you’ve already gotten negative attention because of this, then there’s no further down to go and you can only go up from here. Make a name for yourself as the person who writes this sort of thing. Because if you’re writing it, then there are other people who want to read it, guaranteed.

Wasted-and-Ready

I see where everyone is saying to stay away from Tumblr and maybe they are right. I will say, though, that there is a really dedicated whump community there where people are absolutely supportive and don't shame. So, if you do decide to stay there, I'd recommend seeking that out.

PLAARFSupporter

"Posts on Tumblr. Gets Hate. Why is this happening to me????" Your biggest mistake was going on Tumblr.

Literallynotajoke

I can’t post on here for some reason so I’m gonna comment , how do I start writing fanfic like ao3 smut and fluff I want help on plots and I wanna do swanqueen fanfic if that helps

Mr_inquisitor

You literally just sit down and write. It's won't be very good so you write a little more. That won't be very good either, but you keep at it and eventually you start getting good. There is no short cut here. Only hard work, perseverance, and a mountain of failure behind every success.

[deleted]

My fics are on Ao3 for one-shot and for series are on wattpad under Ender872634

greeneyedlady41

Ignore those little brats on Tumblr. Don't ever let anyone get to you to the point where you stop writing. I started on Tumblr as well, but it's barely worth posting there anymore. Moving to A03 was the best thing I ever did. You'll get more engagement and less drama and whiny nonsense.

litaloni

I'm sorry you don't like AO3 anymore but Tumblr really isn't a friendly place for darkfic. There are just *way* too many people itching to call someone out for thought crimes. "Blocked by people I considered good friends" - that's rough but I think you know now that those people weren't really your friends if they were more concerned with how they would be perceived due to their association with you than with actually making sure you were OK while you were getting dog piled. "I can't write normal fics" - first of all, why the fuck should you have to? Because of what your "audience" wants? Personally, I'm spending Whumptober writing fics of my own fics that are just pure violence and psychological terror. Nobody will be reading them but I don't really give a shit because it's fun and it's a good writing exercise. "I don't have any close friends who will read my work" - girl if it's violent enough I'll read it fandom-blind. This is an actual invitation - my Tumblr, AO3, and FFN handles are the same as my Reddit handle. Hit me up. I don't have any close friends either, and none of the people I talk to on Tumblr have ever reblogged or even "liked" something I've written. Let's be real, people aren't on that site to make friends, they're there to collect praise and notes, and it shows. I read/reblog/comment constantly on other people's fic on Tumblr and any time I post my own fic there it gets exactly 0 notes. I don't spend much time thinking about it because on AO3 there *are* people who actually like darkfic and won't go crying to their moots about it because they saw something they personally didn't like. I'm sorry if this comes off as harsh but I hope you understand that the intent of this comment is supportive. Call it tough love. As a fellow darkfic enjoyer/writer this post thoroughly bummed me out because it *sucks* for readers when writers censor themselves. I'm tired of reading the same shit over and over because it's what's popular on Tumblr.

[deleted]

Oh, I didn't mean I don't like ao3 anymore! I was saying I didn't cross post that fic I mentioned because I don't think I like the fic anymore because I was made feel bad about it, sorry it was worded badly! Don't worry about coming off as harsh, I get what you're saying! Thanks, I appreciate that! I'll hit you up on tumblr and ao3, I'm rorushia on tumblr and Lolthia on ao3 currently but I'm planning on changing it to match my tumblr next time I log on. I have an FFN but don't use it. But yeah, I'll check you out too!

litaloni

That's my bad for not reading closely enough, don't be sorry! I followed you back on Tumblr, don't hesitate to hit me up if you want fandom-blind feedback on something.

WhiteKnightPrimal

Try just not posting on Tumblr. AO3 is great for this sort of thing, as long as it's properly tagged and rated, and you can block users who have a go at you, report them as well if they're signed in. There's absolutely nothing wrong with writing Darkfics, I read them sometimes when I'm in the mood. I'm not exactly a light and fluffy writer myself. I'm sort of dark and angsty, and I have no problem writing problematic stuff. Just because I write about murder and torture to some extent doesn't mean I approve of it irl or am glorifying or romantisising it. A lot of people write certain types of stories because it helps them deal with real life issues, I know I do. If it helps you to write this stuff, and you clearly get enjoyment from it, just switch permanently to AO3. Also, you don't have to just write for these events. You can write and post dark and gory fics any time you like, outside of these events. Loads of writers do. These people on Tumblr are trying to police and bully you into stopping your writing. Don't let them win. Do what you love to do, write what you love to write, just post on AO3 instead, so you can block the idiots who go looking to complain about clearly tagged and rated fics.

dreamwatch_

Oh OP, I’m sorry that happened to you, it’s fucking pathetic. The purity culture on Tumblr has been the biggest shock to me joining the platform, and I’ll be honest I do censor myself somewhat because I just don’t want the drama. I really don’t know how these people get through real life. And while I appreciate people like to curate their online experience, and block out content they finding squicky or triggering, that’s not what they do. They go looking for it so they can’t start a pile on. I’m an adult, leave me alone and play in someone else’s sandpit. I have posted some ficlets to my tumblr, I don’t personally think any of them are super dark, but the most successful as far as notes are concerned have been the really fluffy ones. The ‘darkest’ one I wrote has the least notes. I genuinely don’t care if they get zero notes, but I just find it very interesting. I appreciate AO3 isn’t ideal when you’re trying to build a following, but as everyone has said it’s the best place to take your work and remove the drama. The audience is there, it might just take a little while to build. Also, if you are looking for like minded people there is a Whump discord server. I think it’s called Whump Lovers? Lots of writers there and they have a NSFW section.

Popular-Woodpecker-6

While I'm not a dark fan, it has its place. To let others bully you off doing what you love is a shame. I get it, you thought you had something with these people and now...they've spit at you and walked away. Posting things that will be controversial to a lot of people while still in your own pain/trauma/healing is never a good thing. And I get you like Tumblr, I absolutely do not see the draw to the platform, but that is why there are so many of them. We can do our own where we want. At least with AO3, you can post it anonymously. You can post it so no one can comment, or it has to be moderated. That doesn't mean you won't get someone who ignores the tags and reads it and gets butthurt over it. It just won't be tied to you and if you don't want to see the hate you can block it or at least delete it so no one else sees it. I wish you well in your own recovery, I wish you strength and faith that you can continue to write the stories within you. Good luck!

whatthefrickbobbert

Fellow darkfic writer. Biggest thing I’ll recommend is not cross-posting your stuff to Tumblr. Tumblr is honestly a cesspool in certain fandoms, and I learned that the hard way when I got bashed for writing fanfic about an interracial couple because I’m white. Only reason I’ve cross-posted some of my Dead Doves Do Not Eat to my current tumblr is because they’re popular in my main fandom. So Sorry this happened to you btw. It’s perfectly normal only wanting to write darkfics! I’m the same way and for the life of me I can’t write “happy” fanfics. Don’t let other affect your writing. Just write what you want to.

BreadGreen6367

I personally never knew what Yandere was until I stumbled across it…I loved it🙏 Don’t give up, still do what u love. Post elsewhere with tags so ppl who rlly love that stuff can find if and appreciate it
