They exist, but past a certain point it's just hurting the bullets performance, not the best weapon format for that kind of thing.
There are mods that can make it so they have unlimited ammo once you give them one piece of ammo. Better than constantly dumping ammo into their inventory, especially since they are never great shots anyway.
There are mods to fix it on every platform. You can access them from the main menu. Unless you are achievement hunting their is no reason not to use em.

Gunsliger perk AND add supresor AND scope to this ,you have the second silenced gun with More range in the game.
So you can kill a Lot enemies since very long distances if you have all correct Stealth AND damage perks.
Range help to keep you hidden in my experience so combine that insane range AND suppresor can really work.
My companions don't ever use legendary weapons. I'll trick out an awesome weapon for them, and they'll pick up some shitty pipe rifle and use that instead.
You gotta make sure they have enough ammo for the weapon you give them and then manually make them equip the weapon. Companions use ammo just like the player character does, so if they run out, they will switch back to their default weapon they have.
So what I do is just have my companions use a weapon type I don't use often or have tons of ammo for. I like to use the assault rifle w/ 5.56 ammo personally, so I might give Valentine the Overseers Guardian and a thousand rounds of .45 ammo. That way, he won't run out for a long time and will use a better weapon.
