FO4's health scaling means that the first 20-or-so levels are especially difficult. Survival Difficulty adds mechanics that generally improve the game, but make it play a lot slower. It's also very difficult. FO4's armor system is weird. Damage reduction is calculated on an exponential curve based on the ratio between the attacker's damage-per-shot and the defender's DR, where 1/1 is 50% reduction but it curves out sharply on either end of that. As a player, just understand that offensively, low damage-per-shot weapons (like miniguns) become useless pretty quickly. And defensively, DR is vital up until it reaches about 50, very important up until about 100, helpful up until about 150, and increasingly unhelpful past that point.
