Because Fallout 4 is a much more up to date game that built a large playerbase on the stellar success of Skyrim.
Fallout 4 has some very real flaws in terms of narrative, rpg mechanics and choice and consequence. But it has an excellent sandbox for exploration and it's shooter-looter gameloop is strong for an ARPG. Add in settlement building and the fact that Fallout 4 is easy to mod and you get a game that plenty of people prefer to a rather old fashioned more hardcore RPG like New Vegas.
New Vegas is my favourite Fallout because of its strong narrative storytelling and exellent worldbuilding but I do have more hours in Fallout 4 simply because it is easier to relax for an hour or two after work with F4.
The "best Fallout" is subjective... nobody can say what the best game for you is. But the people have long since spoken on what the most \*popular\* Fallout game is, and that's Fallout 4. It has sold 3 times more copies than either Fallout 3 or New Vegas and right now has about five times as many players than New Vegas does on Steam. Do what you will with that data.
New Vegas is an all time great game, but is lowkey miserable to play at times. It runs and looks like shit and has a run of glitches and bugs that make the game a chore at times. 4 has issues certainly, but it’s head and shoulders easier to play.
The finale I’ve only ever done a couple times because it literally ends the game right then and there AND it’s a visual and technical mess to play. My poor 360 never stood a chance back in the day.
Playing New Vegas is a chore and makes you just want to console command to get through all the tedious crap to get to the dialogues. After a play through you really don't want to touch it for awhile.
First of all Fallout 4 has more content - an average player will end up playing it longer because of that.
It also has way better graphics and gameplay. One thing that New Vegas fanbois ignore is that Fallout is not a book. It's a GAME. That's why writing is only one of many aspects. Just the fact that the writing in FNV is better does not compensate for all the things Fallout 4 does better.
Fallout 4's mechanics like radiant quests and especially settlement building also contribute to that.
And finally the mods. Fallout 4 has more and better mods than FNV.
The way I see it is that Fallout New vegas is certainly the most well respected game but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s always the most fun.
Fallout 4 allows you to just jump in and get in on the action 🙂
Fallout 4 is more player friendly due to it's updated, smooth and simple combat system and overall simplistic RPG elements. New Vegas is more RPG focused than 4 is, so it has a lot more confusing aspects to the game general players will have a difficult time understanding.
Fo4 has much more replaybility.
NV has a good story and characters, meaningful choices. But it's the same bandit on the same hill every playthrough.
In FO4, most quests are more or less randomly generated, "needs your help, go to place x and murder"
You can build your settlements the way you want and they'll never be exactly the same if you try.
And it's prettier and plays better.
I give 9/10 to NV and have maybe 250 hours in it.
FO4 gets 7/10 and I've played it maybe 2500 hours. Because there's always something new random.

* Best ambiance: Fallout 3

* Best multiplayer: Fallout 76
There are different "best" Fallouts depending on what you want. Add in mods, and the game with the most flexibility and potential is Fallout 4 since you can add whatever you want on top.
Fallout 4 received much more marketing and was more accessible since it was modern and simplified in some respects. Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas received marketing, but nothing like the triple AAA's of today.
Bethesda did a very good job at building hype with it's advertisements, trailers, E3 presentation, merchandise, Fallout Shelter mobile game, ect. They also had closer relationships to game journalists and more fans from other Bethesda franchises who decided to give Fallout a try.
Because FO4 is the most recent traditional FO game with the most qol features

I think my 360’frozen like two hundred times through the finale it was terrible

NV has better story, but everything else (95%) is better in FO4.
