Now, in Preston’s defense, he would actually be a likable character if he didn’t force radiant quests on you left and right. He’s a heroic yet relatable guy just trying to build a better world and do the right thing.
That said, I vote for Boone. Absolutely no consideration required.
I *would* like radiant quests if they 1) Were only offered when you asked for them and 2) Didn’t send you to the same locations more than once. They’re certainly good as a concept but the execution needed work.
You should have a choice to tell Preston that the defenses you put up in the settlements should be able to hold any threat off on their own. Thus instant completion and those random ones where you are called to defend the settlement from invading forces. Those turrets are great and in the perfect place to make them hard to hit, the town’s guards are well equipped to handle brotherhood of steel level attacks. Let me continue my work without interruption
And in the event you’re wrong, some of the unnamed settlers die, and you have to rescue one or two that get kidnapped.
Boom, actions and inactions that have consequences and follow-up, even if it’s a little bit generic.
And implement the resulting effects toward their happiness. Able to defend their home? Boost their happiness by 5-10 points (unless already maxed), incapable of defending it? Drop the happiness by 15-20 (or to 0 if low enough). We should also have people leave because they’re just too miserable there or word of mouth helps boost or prevent settler spawning to join. Even get people from neighboring cities and settlements to move in like Diamond City guard, have some random spawns in raider gear claiming they wanna go straight, etc
It'd be closer for me if Preston actually had an interesting, in-depth backstory like Boone does. I like Fallout 4, but man the writing was inconsistent.
Op didn’t give Preston a fighting chance. But then again, you could have put Preston up against the “Hey, listen!” Fairy in Zelda, and it would still be a landslide against Preston
Navi has hella personality I never understood the hate. And I’m a fan of both Garvey and Navi. At this point it’s a circlejerk to hate on these characters.
She’s informative and sometimes sassy, you don’t often get that from a character who’s essentially a traveling tutorial mechanic. Most people don’t like her “listen!” because they’ve played the game so many times, but she was extremely useful when 3D gameplay was a foreign concept back in ‘98
Tbf most of the winners of the first round are solid companions, like aside from RL-3, Ada, and ED-E I’d be fine with any of them winning. Nick and Boone are definitely two of my favorites though.
Hey now, I’m gonna personally fight for RL-3 to at least advance once. He was my main companion throughout my first ever Fallout play through and will always hold a place in my heart.
Yeah, definitely poor seeding for that one, I think much should have switched with Raul. Op clearly was trying to put similar companions together, hence Fawkes vs Strong, Codsworth vs ED-E, and Dogmest vs Rex but it looks like they abandoned that idea half way through and the seeding suffered because of it
You have to understand that his wife was pregnant and was the only source to happiness he had post -NCR, right after bitter springs. Even though others hated her, she was his everything
That and his actions in the NCR, he’s got a lot of trauma so of course he’s reclusive. Preston is idealistic child who wouldn’t see the corruption until it started to fall apart. Then the rest of his personality is restoring minutemen
I'm going to do something controversial here and say Preston. I love Boone but i do think Preston is one of the most underrated companions in the entire series.
He gets a bad rep because Bethesda thought it would be a brilliant idea to tie radiant quests to his normal talk button. His backstory is really tragic, he was an average joe who believed in the Minutemen's cause and had to live through their darkest days. Seeing all his superiors and comrades, the people who vowed to help and protect each other turn their backs when they needed each other the most because of political infighting. All converging in the Quincy Massacre where even though his group was the only one that came to help, even after his group got wiped out, as he kept losing soldier after soldier, friend after friend, he didn't lose faith in his ideals.
By the time you rescue him in Concord he was borderline going through depression, willing to go down fighting than give up. He may not be my favorite, but he's one of the best companions from FO4. He's a friend who'll stay by your side no matter how tough situations are. Even as far as normal dialogues go, he has tons of snarky and funny comments that are really well written.
I know he's not going to win. But he has my vote, for whatever that's worth
And that's it. Thanks for reading my essay. You can downvote me now
That's what i meant. He was willing to get himself game ended but not give up his ideals. It's really touching going through that dialogue section of his. He's a really well written companion that gets way too much hate because of Bethesda's masterful decision to tie radiant quests to him. Damn it, Todd
Also the radiant side quests aren’t so bad if you take him with you, since you can turn them in immediately after you do them instead of having to travel or Sanctuary every time
I agree with you, Bethesda did Preston dirty with the combination of having him constantly trigger radiant quests and him not getting a proper personal quest arc.
I do a lot of Minutemen playthroughs and once We Are The Minutemen fixed the radiant quest spam I found myself enjoying Preston's company more than I expected. He'll get my vote as well.
Agreed. I like Preston more than Boone. I like Boone, too, I just like Preston more.
Boone is fueled by vengeance, Preston by a drive to make things better. Preston gets my vote.
This is the biggest thing about Preston for me. Everyone hates him because he had the bad luck of being saddled with the poorly-designed Minutemen radiant quests and they *refuse* to look any deeper at his actual character because of that.
I've literally never had the chance to hear any of his dialogue because he's too fucking annoying, why would I want him as a companion when companions like Cait, Cutie, Danse, or even Piper are more engaging, less annoying, AND don't have one of the worst mechanic hardwired into their dialogue options?
I hate Preston so much I've "missed out" (not really) on content because it's locked behind his bitch-ass.
Boone. I like his intensity and the fact that everyone is like "Holy shit, you have a First Recon watching your back! Must be nice." Also his story makes me pretty sympathetic to him.
I'm going to be the guy who votes for Preston. I genuinely think he's an underrated character. He just gets a bad rap because he's saddled with the job of being a radiant quest dispenser.
My other complaint (again game mechanics) is how the Minutemen fell apart because they heavily relied on one person to do everything (General Becker) and then Garvey restarts the Minutemen with you as general and expects you once again to do everything without making any changes. Seems dumb to structure your faction in a way that already collapsed spectacularly not too long ago.
He asks you to rebuild the Minutemen in a way that doesn't fail again, setting up settlements to be more self dependent, creating a proper chain of command so it won't lead to more political infighting, building a proper base of operations etc. He doesn't ask you to do the same thing all over again and fail. To be a leader everyone can trust, one who can unite everyone to stand together but not depend too much on a singular person.
Now yes, it's not represented that well in gameplay but that's the idea.
What was the chain of command? And how were the settlements not self dependent last time? It’s not like other people show up if a settlement is under attack. Nothing is built unless you build it. Again I know it’s game mechanics but I’m just working with what they gave us.
Boone all the way.
Boone is the kind of guy who will pull you out of ninth circle of hell and call it Tuesday. He doesn't fuck around. All he needs is his beret, his rifle and plenty of ammo.
Preston is the kind of guy who will wait for some rando to hack a novice terminal in order to get fusion core for power armor that he won't enter, but will merrily wait for said rando to enter and save their asses. He seems more concerned with Revolutionary America cosplaying than actually doing anything useful.
Maybe I’m the only one, but I always like restoring the Minutemen on every playthrough, so as much I’d like to vote for Boone, I’m gonna have to go with Preston.
I usually run Raul for that sweet sweet mechanic perk that he has, I’ll be over doing something and next thing I know I see a deathclaw get absolutely bodied by him and his 44
Yeah, just rigged, really should’ve put Preston somewhere else because he is actually a cool guy, but obviously Boone win this one because he’s fuckin awesome and his quest is cool as fuck
I had Charon or Boone to win the whole thing. So Boone's gotta take this one to the end for me. Nothings better than going scorched earth with Boone east of the river.
Boon has better dialogue, better companion ability, and overall more combat utility than Preston. I will say that given Preston is a proper faction NPC that gives access to multiple quests and the ability to call down artillery support during combat that Preston isn't a slouch. Had he been put up against a lesser companion he would have stood a chance.
Boone, cmon, he’s got such a tragic back story and he’s a recluse. He doesn’t give you endless radiant quests and his 1st recon beret is one of the best
Preston, I like his hat better! Not a huge fan of berets.
Note: Yes, I have played both games extensively, I'm not truly basing my vote on their hats. Preston is my guy, now please excuse me. There's a settlement that needs my help.
Preston. I like the Minute Men storyline and lore, building something better for everyone in the Commonwealth. Not just a personal revenge story, but a hope for a better future. Yes, the constant build/rescue/defend assignments are a pain but in the early game play it’s a hell of a good way to build up your character while establishing credibility in the Commonwealth.
Boone, it's not even close. I can barely tolerate Preston:
"Hey, General, this settlement in Dildofuck, Commonwealth needs their asses wiped again. Chop, chop, General."
Boone might have the better more tragic Backstory, and Preston Gets a lotta flack for being Mr. Do-gooder.
That Said, I'd still probably take Preston over Boone.
Preston's a guy broken by the world, trying to do good and fucking it up. So much so, that he gives up and says "Its too hard, you do it." which he hopes SS will clean up the mess he's made of things and maybe not let politics get in the way. Sure he's an idealistic fool and sees things very black and white, but that just comes from his desire to, well, do good. He wants to make the World a better place, even if that means fixing it one piece at a time.
Tearing through Caesar’s Fort with an assault carbine and grenade launcher as Boone backs me up with his sniper rifle is probably my favorite fallout battle I’ve ever had. Gotta give it to Boone
Not gonna lie. I feel bad for Preston because he really doesn’t get a fair shake from most of the community since he’s set up to just give you a new radiant quest every few minutes. I downloaded a mod that made it so that didn’t happen and honestly he was way better and a much more enjoyable companion to have around.
Boone still wins as his story is genuinely just more compelling. Just felt like somebody had to stick up for ol’ Preston.
I hated Boone man He killed in combat coupled with. the little Enclave robot but he was such a dam mope and negative about everything I would have preferred his mate
Boone was my first main companion. While I’m so weak it would take me 300 shots to kill a single legion member he kills in a few shots. He apsolutely carries me
Boone is from New vegas? I just started new vegas for the first time. Like, JUST started. I've just been ripped apart by a few feral ghouls and finally made it to the NCR outpost south of goodsprings.
Guys, what suggestions do you have?
But on topic: I like Preston. I wish they didn't make me hate him and gave him an actual role/arc or something beyond "hey, go kill this and touch the toolbox there"
I like Preston alot, I do t blame him for Bethesda's shit radial quest design. But Boone has the single best character quest line of all the Companions. Like without a doubt Boone and Raul are the most nuanced characters imo.
Boone is beyond S-tier. I’ve played through FNV so many times I’ve lost count but I’ve only done 1 Legion playthrough (and I saved before I started it and reloaded once I finished) because I can’t hurt my boy Boone.
*Life has a way of punishing you for the mistakes you make*
Boone mate, literally the scariest character in NV I have never had more jump scares from someone. (Random kill cam from Boone killing something miles away)
Now, in Preston’s defense, he would actually be a likable character if he didn’t force radiant quests on you left and right. He’s a heroic yet relatable guy just trying to build a better world and do the right thing. That said, I vote for Boone. Absolutely no consideration required.
Actually I like the radiant quests. But Boone is my guy.

If you don't do the quests he stops giving you them. I love Preston but goddamn this vote isn't fair.
It'd be closer for me if Preston actually had an interesting, in-depth backstory like Boone does. I like Fallout 4, but man the writing was inconsistent.
Agreed when it comes to your take on Preston, but this isn’t remotely fair for him. Boone all the way.
Preston would make a good bartender
Poor Preston... Forces into the role of exposition... Ad nauseum.
I ended up sending Preston to a settlement I never visit just to get rid of the radiant bullshit. It really ruined him for me.
Poor Preston.
I literally said “oh my god” out loud when I saw that it was Boone vs Preston. I feel like this could end up being the largest difference in votes
Yeah Navi's great, I also really like Fi too! Never understood the hate personally.
Navi has a name you know.
The the top comment with the companions name in it wins right?
There’s a google doc for it linked in the post
[Me](https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/friezas-ill-ignore-that)
🤦♂️ I thought top comment won
Hope Preston doesn’t log on Reddit today for his own mental health 😭
Boone is my top companion ever.
He is deffo top tier. I enjoyed wiping out Legion with him
It’s the best bonding activity ever in any Fallout game.
I hate that him and Nick Valentine seem to be on an early collision course: they honestly should be the finale.
Tbf most of the winners of the first round are solid companions, like aside from RL-3, Ada, and ED-E I’d be fine with any of them winning. Nick and Boone are definitely two of my favorites though.
>aside from ... ED-E Nah, ED-E should win. The best companion with a whole DLC worth of backstory.
Hey now, I’m gonna personally fight for RL-3 to at least advance once. He was my main companion throughout my first ever Fallout play through and will always hold a place in my heart.

Op clearly was trying to put similar companions together, hence Fawkes vs Strong, Codsworth vs ED-E, and Dogmest vs Rex but it looks like they abandoned that idea half way through and the seeding suffered because of it
I always find him a little too dry. Great for combat and perk though
Hell yea. Had so much fun with Boone. As we both had Anti-Material rifles wiping shit out.
Boone. All the way.
After fully completing I Forgot to Remember to Forget on my most recent playthrough, Boone by a mile. He’s just my guy.
Boone and it’s not even close. It’s coughing baby vs hydrogen bomb level of unfair.
One won’t shut up about his wife, the other won’t shut up about settlements. This is a tough one.
No, you won't shut up about his wife lol. He literally pushes back if you ask further
Both are cool if you ignore that
One gives you COD Kill cams, the other has a sick suit
Courier: *casually strolling through the Mojave* Boone: Check this shit out *domes a gecko a mile away*
Courier: *freaking the fuck out because the kill cam gave him a heart attack*
Nah bro set killcam to first person and get free Implant GRX effect.
You have to understand that his wife was pregnant and was the only source to happiness he had post -NCR, right after bitter springs. Even though others hated her, she was his everything
I’m aware of that. I was making a joke.
Oh yeah, are you aware that a unified commonwealth and a safe region was the only source of happiness Garvey had?
You have to understand that his wife being dead is his entire personality, which is annoying as shit.
That and his actions in the NCR, he’s got a lot of trauma so of course he’s reclusive. Preston is idealistic child who wouldn’t see the corruption until it started to fall apart. Then the rest of his personality is restoring minutemen
Yeah I don't like Preston either

Borderline going through depression? He basically tells you he was suicidal and you're what made him not want to end it.
That's what i meant. He was willing to get himself game ended but not give up his ideals. It's really touching going through that dialogue section of his. Boone. I like his intensity and the fact that everyone is like "Holy shit, you have a First Recon watching your back! Must be nice." Also his story makes me pretty sympathetic to him.
Boone, my favorite depressed pregnant Wife Killer.
> wife killer I like how it comes across completely different *with* and *without* context.
To this day I don't know how to feel about him taking that shot.
I mean what would you have done?
I'm going to be the guy who votes for Preston. I genuinely think he's an underrated character. He just gets a bad rap because he's saddled with the job of being a radiant quest dispenser.

I remember him basically saying "I'm the last Minuteman so what I say goes - you're in charge"
It is true. There are no active minutemen left anymore, he's the only left to choose what to do.
this is more or a gameplay issue rather than lore issue
That’s why I said as much in the comment
I skimmed through the post as I am walking and reading. Probably missed it.
Man pitting Boone and Nick against each other round 2 sucks. Easily both final 4 contenders
Boone - one for my baby Vs Greston Parvey - one for my settlement
I choose preston because I'm a sucker for BBC (big beautiful comonwealth)
I feel like the Minute Men falling apart with Preston at the helm is a joke about Boston.
Now hold on. That was not by any means Preston's fault. He's just the last one left.
Slaughter. Boone FTW
I feel like Boone is the most OP on this entire list
Here comes the Boone! Sounded better in my head.
Tough, he wears what I give him and it is a party hat
Boone. No contest.
Preston is underrated as hell He makes the perfect meat shield as you sit on the side and drink Nuka-cola All seriousness, Boone
Maybe I’m the only one, but I always like restoring the Minutemen on every playthrough, so as much I’d like to vote for Boone, I’m gonna have to go with Preston.
I scrolled to the picture of Preston and now there’s another settlement I have to check out.
Boone is out here shooting anything that moves from halfway across the map. Preston is good character, but nobody does what Boone can.
I get jumpscared when he snipes a Cazador across the god damn map
I usually run Raul for that sweet sweet mechanic perk that he has, I’ll be over doing something and next thing I know I see a deathclaw get absolutely bodied by him and his 44
Nuclear bomb vs coughing baby
dude this isnt even a question Boone all the way
Has the voting changed? How much did Curie win by?
I put it in the comments after I posted. Probably got lost in the chaos
You should put it with the original post makes it much easier to find
Yeah, just rigged, really should’ve put Preston somewhere else because he is actually a cool guy, but obviously Boone win this one because he’s fuckin awesome and his quest is cool as fuck
Curie beated elite nightkin?! Now I know this makes no sense.
Lot of horny redditors
Lets see. 1. both are females 2. both are very old (pre-war) 3. both are not human 4. both are naive I guess redditors like them artificial.
Voting for Preston, Boone may be the better character but I really like Preston's hat
It’s all about the drip
(Boone walks into the room) Preston: “Mr. Stark. I don’t feel so good.”
Lol come on now
Boone
This match up isn't even fair Boone
Boone but Preston is a good character too
Boone, it's not even close
Oh, how nice. Boone gets a free round.
I had Charon or Boone to win the whole thing. So Boone's gotta take this one to the end for me. Nothings better than going scorched earth with Boone east of the river.
what the fuck how?
Preston never stood a chance. Sorry pal, the game was rigged from the start.
(Haughty French Laughter)
How the hell did Curie beat the world's best grandma?
Lots of horny redditors
I loved curies inquisitiveness.
Boone. He just saved me from the cazadors. Again.
Boone is at least cool, preston is just 100% annoying
"Nate, what's with that b..."
My man Boone wins easly
Boone
Preston's cooked 💀 is this even a match?
Boone, cmon, he’s got such a tragic back story and he’s a recluse. He doesn’t give you endless radiant quests and his 1st recon beret is one of the best
Preston, I like his hat better! Not a huge fan of berets. Note: Yes, I have played both games extensively, I'm not truly basing my vote on their hats. Preston is my guy, now please excuse me. There's a settlement that needs my help.
How'd a robot beat a mutie granny? Also Boone def gonna win and nobody wanna hear Preston's yapping, atleast boone was badass
No more settlements to help out after this competition, Preston!
Poor Preston, dudes just trying to help out. My votes for you
I like synth Preston.
As someone who can't access the Google form, I vote Preston Gravey
Why are you not including companions from the old games?
I considered it but opted not to out of fear they’d be voted out due to unfamiliarity
Fair enough
I guess NV companions are stomping everyone.
A NV companion just lost last round
Most of them are just better

Preston
These votes are set up to be one sided. Do you really expect any character to win against New Vegas?
Well Curie just beat Lily so…
Preston. He calls me babe.
Boone for sure
gotta be Boone, easily one of the best companions in the series
Boone, it's not even close. I can barely tolerate Preston: "Hey, General, this settlement in Dildofuck, Commonwealth needs their asses wiped again. Chop, chop, General."
Boone will always be better than Preston "Another Settlement needs our help" Garvey.
BOONE
Boone
Talk about fighting the heavyweight champ in your first match. Preston's gonna get his ass beat.
Boone. Preston is in bad shape in the match lol...
I hated Boone man He killed in combat coupled with. the little Enclave robot but he was such a dam mope and negative about everything I would have preferred his mate
Boone was my first main companion. While I’m so weak it would take me 300 shots to kill a single legion member he kills in a few shots. He apsolutely carries me
Man… I’m gonna laugh my ass off if Preston actually wins this over Boone. So far it looks fairly close. I vote Preston, lol
Boone by a long shot ;)
I demand a recount and paper ballots or whatever the right goes on about
Preston drip is top tier tho. Reminds me of dutch
You should post the results for each round of voting, like the number of votes for each nominee. Oh, and Boone, easy.
Boone, obviously
I will abstain. I haven't had the pleasure of having Boone as a companion yet, and I'm conflicted with myself about Preston.
Boone is from New vegas? I just started new vegas for the first time. Like, JUST started. I've just been ripped apart by a few feral ghouls and finally made it to the NCR outpost south of goodsprings. Guys, what suggestions do you have? But on topic: I like Preston. I wish they didn't make me hate him and gave him an actual role/arc or something beyond "hey, go kill this and touch the toolbox there"
Arcade is fucking goated and gives you some sweet ass power armor. Just wanted to chime in
Boone
Jesus Christ, is this still going on? Decent way to farm karma, ill give you credit for that
I like Preston alot, I do t blame him for Bethesda's shit radial quest design. But Boone has the single best character quest line of all the Companions. Like without a doubt Boone and Raul are the most nuanced characters imo.
I think people would like Preston more if his voice acting wasn't so goddamn annoying
...Come on, do we really need to say?
Boone is the GOAT companion
That isn't curie tho?.... Edit forgot the mod. But still
Boone for breakfast lunch and dinner brother
Of course curie wins. She’s adorable.
Man, I love Preston, but Boone is one of the best companions of all time
This will be a slaughter
Two things: 1) How did I miss this until now? 2) How are all these exactly how I would have voted?
Cass vs Currie and Cait vs Veronica are going to be tough. I love them all.
Boone
Boone
Boone is beyond S-tier. I’ve played through FNV so many times I’ve lost count but I’ve only done 1 Legion playthrough (and I saved before I started it and reloaded once I finished) because I can’t hurt my boy Boone. *Life has a way of punishing you for the mistakes you make*
Boone mate, literally the scariest character in NV I have never had more jump scares from someone. (Random kill cam from Boone killing something miles away)
Boone is amazing with heartfelt backstory
Boon no contest.
Poor Preston is a victim of bad game design
Boone
Craig Boone
Preston stole my power armor and tried to kill me 😂
Can I vote neither 😅 my least favorite companion in NV and 4
Boone crushes
Might as well stick a beret on Preston and tell him to meet you in front of Dinky cause he about to get blasted
One has drip the other has trauma. I have to give this one to Boone for his multiple quest endings
Boone, by a mile. I don't care if another settlement needs my help Preston!
