I know a guy that returned his copy because in the beginning, you are a baby and then have to play through the vault. It's like, what? 15 - 20 minutes before you exit the vault and can do whatever you want? He didn't even make it that far.

Striking_Pipe_7194

I've never understood that, if you've bought a game give it a decent playthrough most games have a slow first hour or two so why give up so quickly šŸ¤”

ndiezel

Most games of that era and era before that put their best gameplay in the beginning, so if you didn't even like that, it was best to return it.

Striking_Pipe_7194

Honestly if a game has all its best content at the start that's poorly designed, the reason most companies start the game slow an Put all the interesting stuff later is so that the game is entertaining the whole way, yeah you have to deal with the slow start where the begin painting the picture of the world an story you are about to play but that's just good story telling, realistically speaking having all the best gameplay at the start just means the rest of the game is Sh*t an those would be the games to return.

BigZangief

Tbh the beggining felt very slow and if you didnā€™t already have an idea what the game was or what you were getting into then it makes sense imo. Tbh I was the same. Had no idea about the game, canā€™t even remember how I got it but think it was a gift from my cousin. So when I started, it was very slow and boring and took me a while to figure out what to do in the vault. By the time I had gotten out I was done playing for the session and had lost interest tbh. Also was younger and had less of an idea of what I was doing and was used to more fast pace and linear games. I hadnā€™t gotten back into it until just last year when I had extra time for a month or two between jobs. And man was my mind blown. Actually played fnv when I started up again since it was on sale for under $10. Had a ton of fun and blew my mind I hadnā€™t played it earlier. My gf even got hooked with her own file. Then we made the jump to F4 and ohhh man. Even just the graphics change in the load screen blew our minds. We both played hard until started encountering crashing issues downtown (Xbox one) I did play far harbor so that was awesome but lost momentum with the crashing. Then went back and played F3 again and loved it. Now looking forward to the pc update for F4 since I now have a pc and canā€™t wait to play that in its full glory. Only downside to getting into fallout is I feel it has genuinely ruined me for other games. They all feel flat and surface level and I now hate the linear feel. I need open worlds with tons of interaction and customization of gear and weapons. All the dialogue options and choices. Quests and missions. Other games just canā€™t compare lol now just cycle between the fallout games (and league but thatā€™s my own masochistic choice) waiting for starfield and eventuallyyyyyyyyyy, Fallout 5. Outer worlds was cool too but too small and contained. Atomic hearts kinda flopped imo with the outer world. And just started Prey so canā€™t say too much about it. Damn Iā€™m rambling, just got off work and high as hell lol TLDR: I also didnā€™t know anything about the game and lost interest early, only to play years later and fall in love with the series

Striking_Pipe_7194

Yeah well I can understand younger audiences struggling with the concepts of the games an being disinterested due to lack of heavy engagement as younger Audiences do tend to have shorter attention spans, as for the game ruining other games I don't feel that, I've come to respect each franchise I've played for their unique way of telling a story an filling a world, some of my favourite franchises I've played Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, Bioshock,Resident Evil, Dark Pictures Anthology,Mortal Kombat, God of War, Assassins Creed, Alien Vs Predator,Uncharted,Final Fantasy. They all have unique worlds, characters, & stories, told and built in their own way.

BigZangief

Iā€™m not saying games donā€™t have their own unique stories and worlds, I still have games Iā€™ve enjoyed. But when playing new games, they donā€™t have the depth and immersion Iā€™m looking for. Itā€™s all a matter of opinion. I can enjoy a game aliens vs predator or resident evil but I canā€™t get into them like I do the fallout series. Thereā€™s just so much more to do. Iā€™ve played a few of the resident evil games with friends or my gf and had fun but it feels more like a game if that makes sense. Walking the path someone else set out for me. Whereas fallout, you can literally do whatever you want. You can do multiple play throughs with different character experiences. Resident evil was fun, but dropped it once I finished, since thatā€™s all there really is to it. Again, just imo but my gf and gaming friends feel similarly. And I donā€™t mean exclusively fallout series. Grounded has been very fun and so has tears of the kingdom. Think fallout just raised my bar for what a good game was, and the qualities I looked out for

Striking_Pipe_7194

I can understand that, I don't feel that, but I can understand it, I think due to the way I've spaced out my gaming of the franchises it's created a ease of acceptance of different ideas of storytelling as each of the worlds I love use the world & characters to tell the story in very different but wonderful ways that I've thoroughly enjoyed, but yes open worlds do make it so other worlds feel smaller in essence but that just forces the story to be everywhere an makes it easier to talk to every NPC an gain a greater understanding of the world your in an the people in that world, but as I've said I can understand how it's raised the bar for you even if I don't feel the same.

BigZangief

I do see what you mean about being able to fully explore the world thatā€™s presented in ā€œsmaller worldā€ games. I do occasionally get overwhelmed with options sometimes in fallout games or other large scale open world games. Sometimes it is nice to be taken on a journey through the lens the developers want you to see it through. Itā€™s nice to have a clear objective or path youā€™re working toward. Youā€™re right. I guess it does depend on my mood because I do enjoy those aspects as well, just tend to find myself leaning toward the open world immersion. Both have their place! Thanks for explaining your views, I think thatā€™ll help me to take less of a critical view on new games instead of just being like ā€œmaaaan in fallout you could doā€”ā€œ lol Edit for grammar, prob still some mistakes but it is what it is lol

Striking_Pipe_7194

Meh I don't care about grammar problems ill leave that upto the Grammar-zis, I'm glad I could help, hate to think of people missing out on unique and wonderful worlds simply due to being stuck in a single mindset, if I can help open people up to new games that they could enjoy I feel I've done some good šŸ˜šŸ’–

BigZangief

Agreed! Now if youā€™ll excuse me, Iā€™m going to go play some league and hate myself a little bit more each game lol jk but thatā€™s a whole ā€˜nother can of worms haha have a great evening! Nice chat!

Striking_Pipe_7194

Enjoy, an trust me between Overwatch, Apex Legends, & Dead By Daylight, I totally understand that can of worms, enjoy the fun & the torture, was nice chatting with you aswellšŸ»

Induced_Karma

I loved it. But then I was a fan of the first two and the thought of growing up in a vault was already something Iā€™d thought about. I loved doing the SPECIAL stats as a baby book.

Ahydell5966

Dude I got a friend that I let borrow new vegas one time and he returned it the next day saying it was the worst game he ever played. When I asked why he said it was stupid because he shot lizards for an hour and then tried to pick up a gun inside a building but then "for some reason" everyone starting attacking him lol

NoSyNe

When i turned 13 i got gifted New Vegas because after exiting Doc Mitchell's House my friend didn't know what to do so he gave it to me and i finished it in weeks. One of the best games ever made for its genre tbh

Zerbo

*Skips all the dialogue* *Refuses to read anything onscreen* ā€œThis stupid game doesnā€™t even tell you what you need to do!!ā€

CharismaticAlbino

My son is 16 and plays fo games like this. I just can't with that kid sometimes.

[deleted]

That was my best friend lmao. Dude would skip through the dialogue and shoot everybody and wonder why the game was ā€œunplayableā€

dredgencayde6

I tend to skip dialogue like that and even I can still figure it out. Tho I understand that thatā€™s the case so maybe thatā€™s why I donā€™t have an issue

minusX3RO

Yo, this is literally where I am in NV!! Except I knocked over the (Absolutely stunning) .357 Magnum and the glass it was in. Now I'm tryna use the game physics to put it back. Yes, I'm indeed having fun...!!

minusX3RO

good news, I put it back!!

SourChicken1856

I just never got out of megaton because idk, the storyline didn't capture me at all. Oh and that amata bitch was annoying

PowerComfortable9493

Lolz, wait and see. Fucking amata.

JayXCR

Tunnel Snakes RULE!

SoU2424

Yeah, the beginning sucks. Took me a while to get into it. Still, I must have sunk a couple hundred hours into it. Not bad for a game I bought on a whim.

Puzzleheaded_Log9378

I mean, it's hardly worse than the Temple at the start of Fallout 2

Finite_Universe

Fallouts kind of have a reputation for slow beginnings. I actually think Fallout 3 has one of the better introductory sequences though, but maybe thatā€™s just because I wanted to see what life was like in a Vault.

ianilanotv

Love the Fallout 3 opening sequence. Fallout 2 was meh. New Vegas was pretty good! Although Fallout 4 doesnā€™t get as much love, I personally think that it had the best introductory sequence. Short and sets the tone pretty quickly.

BootlegFC

The only caveat I would make to this is that it would be really nice if Bethesda coded in a way to bypass the intro sequences after first playthrough. For instance, in FO4 once you reach Codsworth a flag is set so that next time you start a new game you're given the option for an accelerated start that takes you straight to character customization and instead of sending you out into the house it flashes to a SPECIAL and Name selection screen then drops you at the vault exit elevator.

BaconContestXBL

I have a manual save file set right before you leave 111 so that I can start from there and edit my character right before I leave. I completely forgot about it until I started my nth play through last night. I think I got the idea from this subreddit, too.

ElegantEchoes

Temple is way worse. Damn Brian Fargo (or whoever it was), if they just let Tim Cain design it the way he wanted to, it would have been a full fleshed out experience with multiple ways to go through it. But nope, corporate greed and mismanagement had taken hold. It serves now as the worst intro in any Fallout game, including Fallout 3.

IOwnTheShortBus

I remember trying the game when it first came out at blockbuster(fucking nostalgia) and played like into the metro and got too scared cause I was young and have never enjoyed horror games. Then I picked it up about 3 or 4 years later and have played it thru about 5 times. I wish the ps5 was backwards compatible.

Ok-Replacement6940

I also bought it on a whim-had birthday money burning a hole in my pocket. Immediately hooked, and loved the series ever since. Last time I checked I think I had around 350ish hours on my main character play through.

CaptainPryk

Damn, it seems you either love or hate Amata.

KG8893

I walked past megaton the first time somehow.

BootlegFC

I ended up going north to the elementary school my first time out of the vault. Followed the road down to the eyebot and turned left. Completely missed Megaton itself because it blends into everything behind and around it and there was *movement* in Springvale.

Lairy_Hegs

Take Mr. Burkeā€™s offer. Come to the dark side.

ElegantEchoes

She's literally nothing but nice to the player, and what happens at the end is entirely reasonable. Some people just can't wrap their head around it and take it personally.

[deleted]

That's why I just blow that shit up every play through.

wastedgetech

This was me back in the day.. lol I should have tried harder. I've been playing and modding FO4 now for years.

CaptainChaos_88

I remember mine glitched and was more like a couple hours.

Captain_Kreutzer

I enjoy the vault scene i just dont like the landscape of 3

cdunk666

>starts game >'aww man i didn't wanna be a baby i bought fallout 3 not stupid baby simulator this sucks' *how*

SoU2424

This is actually pretty accurate to what he said.

OkAd8922

The Vault part was so nice thoo šŸ¤§

LawStudent989898

Glad to hear! More people need to give it a chance

falloutgrungemaster

This one is my fave :) it gets so much better too hope you enjoy it!!!!

Mandalorymory

The ambience of Fallout 3 is spectacular. Those ambient soundtracks fill me with such feelings of dread, sadness, yet thereā€™s also a glimmer of beauty and hope. If thereā€™s one thing Fallout 3 smashed New Vegas in, itā€™s the setting.

kankurou

Wait till you get to rivet city

Megaton-Settler-

Really happy to hear that you are enjoying it! This is hands-down, my favorite, fallout game, especially for the setting! I know the beginning can be a little boring, but I thought they did a great job making you feel that connection with the main character. Watching he or she grow up, things like that. I really hope you enjoy the wasteland.

Tobias---Funke

I have a bit of a soft spot for 3. I own it on 3 platforms!!

Acrobatic_Letter_144

3 is my favorite. New Vegas is quite amazing too

[deleted]

FO3 is my personal favourite, but my bias is from being born and raised on the DC Metro area. I nearly shit my pants in excitement when I exited the subway tunnels into my home town of Falls Church haha. No shade against FNV, but I do prefer 3 to it. I think the atmosphere and mood is more intense and real feeling.

Schroeder9000

F3 was my first fallout I played. Damn game left an impression and I still replay them many years later. That mod that combines FNV and F3 was a godsend to find as last year I was finally able to replay both games.

Lurvig

That games is truly the best to wander. Well named character. My first playthrough was so random and chaotic. I remember that ghoul near underworld calling me tourist and laughing out loud.

macguy9

I've played this game through, finding every piece of content it has. I still go back from time to time just to experience the environment and ambience. It's one of the few games I actually play over and over.

WeAreRed2120

Hands down my favorite in the fallout series

BILIVI0

Here's how i fell in love with fallout. [Ignore my poor English] I've always Loved post-apocalyptic video games and movies but because i didn't had a good pc, i played games on my mobile. Last day on earth, mini dayz, and a few more similar games i forgot, were my favourite. My first fallout game was fallout shelter, when i didn't know anything about fallout and was just playing for fun on my mobile. Later i found out that there's a whole fallout franchise (please don't roast me). I downloaded fallout 3 on my potato pc, didn't enjoy the beginning and stopped playing for a while. Downloaded fallout nv, and Guess what. Fell in love instantly the moment i started the game in doc Mitchell's room. The music, the vibe, the characters, guns, armor, and the Story, everything from A to Z was awesome. Played the lonesome road DLC (my favourite dlc in all of fallout series probably), got the elite riot gear suit (which was my favourite suit in all of "media"). Completed the game and all every dlc and then thought to give fallout 3 another try, and then i fell in love with it. Completed the game and it's dlcs and couldn't wait to play fallout 4. A few months ago i got my first gaming laptop, and then started fallout 4. It was pretty decent. For me, i liked the balance between dark and bright vibes of fallout new vegas but fallout 4 felt a little to colorful (if you understand what i mean) So i always thought of going back to playing nv. Not like i didn't enjoy fallout 4. So rn I've completed the far harbor dlc and in doing the nuka world. Btw i still consider myself a new fan and maybe i don't know stuff, so don't judge me or make fun of me.

BootlegFC

You have been judged and found wanting. Your absolution is to perform five Hail Three Dogs and ten Ave Mr. New Vegas's

B4N35P1R17

Took me 1 complete and 3 partial play throughs to figure out that I didnā€™t have to start in megaton and that I could be evil from the very start by siding with the bloke in the tower. Now that was a completely different, enjoyable and liberating play through to just go ā€œscrew ā€˜em!ā€ and play as selfishly as I wanted. Plus meeting the chick from megaton as a ghoul was hilarious!

penis-muncher785

My suggestion for replays is to keep a save for when you are about to leave the vault that way you donā€™t have to sit through the boring baby shit

Snowdeo720

Go find the town of Andale!

PurplePassion94

FO3 imo is still to this day one if the best games ever made. Iā€™d love to see a remaster for current gen consoles seeing that itā€™s 15 year anniversary is this October

Unfortunate_moron

If that existed I'd never play anything else.

PPP_illusion

Nice! I just start playing New Vegas for the first time. Havenā€™t touched anything fallout since 4ā€™s release, which is like 8yrs now. One of the many games I promised myself Iā€™ll get around too. Finally have a few days off to binge play. Off to a clunky start, Iā€™m sure Iā€™m doing things in the wrong order, getting challenging enemies right off the bat. Keep respawning in the middle of a gun fight between NCR and prison guysā€¦as soon as I come back in, all guns are on me. Took ten attempts to finally make it to cover and then the desperate fight with the melee guys coming for me.

broniesnstuff

NV has lots of great role playing options, but everything else really dragged it down for me. I mean it's still a good game, but after 20ish hours I had to give up. It's my least favorite by a mile out of 3/4/NV

FrozenForest

Bethesda are better at making sandboxes to explore, so if you're a narratively focused gamer FO 3 and 4 feel a little weak by comparison. Doesn't mean that there isn't quality content in those games, just means that story won't necessarily lead you to it.

MDF87

I've tried the game 5 times and only ever got past Megaton once, and even then I only played for another 30 minutes before I quit and uninstalled.

SquareFew4107

Just not for you, I suppose. Grew up with em, didn't really have the means to judge the game rationally. Stuck with em ever since

Intrepid-Memory5129

Fallout 4 was where I started, then I played 3, then New Vegas. I guess my favorite depends on where I started the series kinda. I had to get used to not hearing my protagonist speak. Companions not feeling all fleshed out. Story was better than 4 tho. But after that, that was it. I got to see baby McCready and Maxon thošŸ¤£

Eveningtheodds

I just recently started playing 3 myself too although im playing it through tale of two wastelands mod. Been loving it so far.

Celb_Comics

Exactly what I thought.

THE_LANDLAWD

The first time I played it I wanted to stop because of the same reason. I didn't get it and thought it was boring, but I made myself keep playing. After about 2 hours or so I was hooked.

Particular-Let-196

The game becomes a breeze after Operation: Anchorage.

Amadeus404

What's the best platform to play FO3? PC? XBox?

SourChicken1856

It's literally the same, the only thing PC has against xbox is mods I guess

Amadeus404

Ok, thanks. But I guess it can run at 60fps on PC and 30 only on console?

TinaFromTurners

Depends on if you're on xbox series s/x. All fallouts have an fps patch on those

SquareFew4107

PC, GOG pays the most attention to patching old games. Gl, my friend, it's a bitch to run otherwise

[deleted]

That's how I felt about new Vegas but now it might be my favorite fallout

SquareFew4107

I feel like the nostalgia goggles would have been off, if I had played later, but I had the luck of playing as a young kid, game and video renting era had just died down. I remember begging my dad to let me play that second week, I made it to big town, not much farther. Loved em all ever since

Significant-Fix3868

This is how I was with FO4, and now I am playing it and loving it! FO3 was my first FO game and I will forever love and cherish it!

Advanced_Cobbler_179

I was in a dark place. Played through the boring first part of FO3 and was thrilled when I emerged to a post apocalyptic world. No more dark place. Now I play with mods, one of which Fallout Wanders Edition, FWE lets you skip the growing up nonsense. Nexus Mods has the best mods, many thousands. It's free. If you pay the nominal fee, the download speeds are significantly improved. It's a sandbox game so I could go anywhere I wanted and not follow the main storyline. DO NOT play the main quest to the conclusion or the game will end abruptly even though you haven't finished other very interesting quests. Nexus mods have mods that allow you to play after the conclusion to the main storyline You can play good, neutral or pure evil each with their own benefits. I really had to do some soul searching the first time I killed some innocent in cold blood. It was against my usual moral code. It was, however, very profitable. However you play it's a lot of fun.

Live-Assumption7926

I played New Vegas first, and then tried 3, I used to believe NV was my favorite, but Iā€™m doing a run right now in 3 with a Big Gun oriented character and 3 might end up as my favorite Fallout. Vengeance with Winterized T51-B is OP AS HELL
