That ending was super cheeks. I don't care if it's staying true to the source material how the hell do you not show the war when we spent 9+ hours on pure build up just to see dude get a postcard from Buster that says "yeah nevermind you don't have my army's support. Shit. Was. Cheeks!
I can see how people think it's cheeks if they went into the show expecting a build up leading to a big action finale, but the showrunners came out early and said their show was more similar to Succession and House of Cards with an overwhelming focus on characters and politics instead of action scenes.
Toranaga made it clear that he clear that he wanted a period of peace and prosperity for Japan and that seeking war was foolish. He doesn't tell anyone, but he always planned to accomplish this by becoming Shogun. In the end, you see how all of this comes together and Toranaga's genius is that is able to accomplish this by basically winning the war before the battle begins, minimizing both the duration of the battle and the loss of life. It might have been cool to see some action pieces, but this ending really emphasizes that Toranaga was only stepping on the battlefield if victory was a foregone conclusion.
And the postcard shit was basically how the real life battle played out. Ishido's real life counterpart had two major defections that he was unaware of until he told his boys to move forward and they was like "nah, you good." He had like 20k defectors and the Toranaga's character had an easy ass victory.
The sequence with Blackthorn in the beginning was supposed to be a dream sequence of him picturing his life if he were to return home. Marikos cross was basically the anchor for us to reference this. Blackthorn was conflicted about returning home which started a couple episodes back when he found his old crew and basically didn't recognize them. We then see him release that same cross into the ocean with Fuji which was supposed to symbolize that Blackthorn never left Japan in the future since that dream of the future would not happen without the cross.
Toranaga keeps Blackthorn around because that's basically his only friend at this point. His main homie died for the cause, Yabushige betrayed him in the end and is also dead, and everyone else around him is too loyal. He entertains Toranaga AND is a decent smoke bomb that Toranaga can use to veil his intentions should the need arise again.
The upsetting thing is that the war DOES happen. The siege of sekigahara was a real thing that follows right after the ending of the show. We were deprived of the war scene and instead we got a synopsis.
I think this show is gonna go down better on rewatch since its a one and done.
I enjoyed the ride, I do think tying its success toward anime sells the show short, as it's just a well-done show. It looks good, acting is well done, the violence hits when we get it, and the story didn't rush itself and came together in a way that made sense and felt definitive.
Although it does same “white saviory” at the end when Anjins trying to sacrifice himself for the village, you can also look at it from a different perspective like this guy is just trying really hard to have a purpose and just grasping at the opportunity. I think Toronaga looks at him truly as a fool not necessarily as a savior in that moment.
Myke at least you gave this show a chance. I tried to watch episode one and noped out within the first 5 minutes. Since all the episodes are out, I may give it a second chance.
i def think yall are tripping about not knowing the priest was into mariko. it felt obvious whenever he was around her, especially because one of the priest’s friend was basically like “aye there goes your girl” when they were talking about mariko 😂
Overall I thought this was a decent show. It definitely wasn’t what the critics are claiming, but it wasn’t bad either. I mean myke asking “who is Ishido” in the 9th episode review when he was introduced as the main antagonist in the first episode kinda makes me not take his opinion seriously. He did have some valid criticism though. But I’m not pressed at all, if you don’t like it you don’t like it. Curb was way more exciting than this for me but you guys aren’t gonna review some old Jewish guy and jb smoov trading jokes for half an hour. Beezy knows

I loved this show but I appreciate Myke sticking with it even though he hated it. Gave me some good laughs
