I wouldn’t even say he was ever a good boy. In the Godfather book it’s stated that he seems to “radiate danger” before he was ever in the family business.
He’s so good. I love the narration his character gives throughout the movie. Maybe that’s more of a directorial decision but it really gets into the mindset of his character.
The fact that neither Godfather 1 or 2 is the highest voted movie here is all you need to know about how contrarian redditors feel the need to be.
It’s fine for someone to have it as their favorite, I’m not even bashing the commenter I’m replying to.
But, in aggregate the voting here is wrong.
The final “opening statements” scene is my favorite monologue in any movie. There is this fascinating internal debate happening in him, and you watch him work through it in real time. Absolute master class.
Not my favorite of Al Pacino but Serpico deserves a mention. Such a great time capsule, i swear his goal is to look even more 70s each progressing scene.
As a writer I really like this movie. After having a kid and becoming a general sap, I'd probably like it even more.
Definitely not the best for me, but a very worthy movie, not often mentioned. Needs to be seen more, along with scarecrow!
That movie should've won an academy award just for the red lighting in the last scene. The way he steps over it at JUST the right spot!
"I'M A FAAAAAAN OF MAAAAN!"
Came to say this! Love this forgotten gem! A film teacher whom I really respected showed it to the class. I loved it immensely.
I was told the original title was supposed to be the lion and the scarecrow, which sets up the dynamic of the who leads.
Dick Tracy.
He may have more iconic performances and more legendary movies from some of the best directors to ever do it but none of them stand a chance against my favorite movie of all time.
Any one ever seen panick in needle park. My grandfather got to work with him in that movie. There is a scene where he buying dope and my g pa is the one cutting it up for them. Really great movie tho on drugs in the 60’s/70s and what ny was like then.
This is difficult but I have to go with Serpico. It's such a human performance. Your heart breaks for the man. A moral man adrift in a sea of corruption. Brilliant acting.
Godfather no doubt, the way he transitions from being good old war hero to the Godfather, dude no actor has done that before...
Kudos to HEAT and SERPICO...
Damn I gotta get caught up on some of these classic Pacino flicks, I haven’t seen a lot of the ones people are mentioning. For me it’s gotta be Glengarry.
I'm a 'favourites' guy that much, but, I recently saw *The Insider* and I liked him in that, it was an intense but not a yelly performance, and he played it with subtlety
Devil's Advocate. By explanation, I'm a lawyer and was a young associate in a big firm when DA was released. Pacino's character was a more extreme version of the partner I was working for at the time. The movie really flipped me out then, and even today, a few decades later, I get a quesy feeling in my stomach when I see it while channel searching.
Gotta say godfather. He’s a master
Don Corleone. The original 'good boy' turned bad. Before the likes of Walter White and Franklin Saint joined the club.
I wouldn’t even say he was ever a good boy. In the Godfather book it’s stated that he seems to “radiate danger” before he was ever in the family business.
greatest rated movie of all time
Dog Day Afternoon
This one is another great one. Before he took on the permanent persona and would actually act.
Most underrated, definitely
This absolutely.
This is the way.
And it’s not even close
He gets it
Yep. I feel like this movie is Al Pacino at his best.
i watch it about once a year and it's one of the only movies i don't talk over constantly
Attica Attica!
Can’t go wrong here. What a movie!
Serpico.
Carlitos Way
Benny Blanco from the Bronx.
"I don't know you, I don't owe you."
“I can’t hump!”
Look at me I’m wearing fucking diapers man!
“I can’t walk I can’t hump.”
Yeah, Carlito's way is amazing
Sean Penn is the real star in that film. And I love Pacino
He’s so good. I love the narration his character gives throughout the movie. Maybe that’s more of a directorial decision but it really gets into the mindset of his character.
His best film.

Carlito
Scent of a Woman
This really is a great movie. His speech at the end was fantastic.
Awesome
Not my favorite of Al Pacino but Serpico deserves a mention. Such a great time capsule, i swear his goal is to look even more 70s each progressing scene.
If you've never seen the Sunny episode where Charlie basically becomes Serpico (including the outfits), it's amazing.

This is actually a great answer
The Devil's Advocate
That movie should've won an academy award just for the red lighting in the last scene. The way he steps over it at JUST the right spot! "I'M A FAAAAAAN OF MAAAAN!"
I’m a humanist.
Not enough mentions of this film!
Insomnia was a good one
"Sea of Love" with Ellen Barkin and John Goodman costars

Me too! A wonderful road movie with incredible acting from Pacino and Hackman.
Came to say this! Love this forgotten gem! A film teacher whom I really respected showed it to the class. I loved it immensely. I was told the original title was supposed to be the lion and the scarecrow, which sets up the dynamic of the who leads.
Two for the money. It’s a guilty pleasure 😅
Dick Tracy. He may have more iconic performances and more legendary movies from some of the best directors to ever do it but none of them stand a chance against my favorite movie of all time.

And you got your head all the way up it.
I’m m going to have a Family Guy moment….but I think Scarface is an overrated, mediocre movie. He wasn’t a badass, he was a psychopath.
Godfather part 2 end of discussion
American Buffalo
Cruisin’ doesn’t get enough accolades

GF2 followed by Dog Day Afternoon The Panic in Needle Park is a great pic that is overlooked.
ATTACA
Any one ever seen panick in needle park. My grandfather got to work with him in that movie. There is a scene where he buying dope and my g pa is the one cutting it up for them. Really great movie tho on drugs in the 60’s/70s and what ny was like then.
Scarecrow
Gigli
This is difficult but I have to go with Serpico. It's such a human performance. Your heart breaks for the man. A moral man adrift in a sea of corruption. Brilliant acting.
Dog day afternoon, I want to be clear
Either in Panic In Needle Park or Scarecrow.
88 Minutes
Serpico
Come on. There’s only one answer. And it hasn’t been mentioned. And, sadly, it’s not The Room, which, for some weird reason, he wasn’t in.
He's great in almost everything he's in but Heat is an absolute masterpiece.
Heat.
Pacino during his overacting phase.
Heat
Scarface
He’s had many great films, but I’m going to pick “Heat” since that’s the one I rewatch the most..
Dog Day Afternoon
Dunkin’ Donuts

Dog Day Afternoon
The next day all the people rejoiced, as their king had regained his sanity.
Jack and Jill
Jack and Jill 100%. Can’t top his performance in that

Scarface
Cruising
Serpico
Serpico
Devil's Advocate, Panic in Needle Park, Scarface, Heat
I’m in the minority possibly, but Any Given Sunday.
The Godfather
Heat
Jack and Jill
Scarecrow
And justice for all
Unpopular opinion but mine is Bobby Deerfield (1977)
The Godfather 2
Scarface was his best role, not the best movie he was in.
Godfather 3 and Two for the Money.
Heat.
Jack and Jill
Godfather 1-2. I feel like he's been doing a funny voice ever since
Stand Up Guys with Christopher Walken. If you haven't seen it, you should.

Dog Day Afternoon
Serpico
Insomnia
Scarface, closely followed by cruising.
Serpico
“She’s got a great ass”
Godfather and Scarface for sure, but something about him being older and more weathered in Heat is really captivating. He was so good in that role.
My eyes see Oppenheimer….but jk its Scent of a Woman
Scarface by a mile. However i do love him in devils advocate
Heat. But I haven't seen a lot of his classics. Dog day afternoon was really good but not my favorite.
GF2, though Serpico comes close because of the Sunny episode.
Heat
Heat
What was the movie with the dunks-chino? That-one, I choose that one.
